MEMBERS of the Labour party are tackling litter in Ryedale.

The Malton and Thirsk Labour constituency decided to organise a group to tackle the problem, specifically with littering on grass verges around Ryedale.

“The amount of fly tipping in our area is a real problem, has been for too long, and one that I am determined to do something about,” said Jack Ashton, a Labour supporter from Malton.

“Ryedale District Council employs six street cleaners, who predominantly concentrate on the main town centres.

“In our local Labour Party we wanted to do more than just pass good resolutions over a pint and wanted to actually do something to make a difference in our communities.”

The Malton and Thirsk Labour group organised the litter picking alongside the UK charity, Keep Britain Tidy.

The Great British Spring Clean, a campaign by Keep Britain Tidy, are encouraging volunteers to tidy their community and educate people on the effects of littering, from March 20 to April 13.
