PHOTOGRAPHY can sometimes be compared to the concept of abstract. A snapshot from a moment in time, a flash of the extraordinary, a stream of colour across a familiar horizon – all viewed differently in the eye of the beholder.

“Photography has already made me begin to explore more of the beautiful landscapes and events of my home county of North Yorkshire,” said photographer David Swann.

“It has taken me to places I have never been before and it has made me look at familiar places with completely new eyes.”

A retired head teacher, David spent most of his time writing and performing folk songs alongside the Thornton-le-Dale Ukuleles.

Stumbling across photography only last year, David decided to take a step back from music to pursue his passion for the world around him by publishing a book.

“Over the last year, I have been teaching myself how to use my camera and captured a range of photographs from across Ryedale and North Yorkshire - I just love it,” David continued.

From the serene harbours of Staithes, to splattered colourings of a sunset over the North York Moors – David has selected his favourite photographs from 2019 and created a book called My Yorkshire Year in 50 Photographs.

“I have chosen the photographs either because I love the location, I’m pleased with how it turned out technically, or because I’m particularly pleased with the composition,” David added.

“I have a lot to learn about the technical side of photography, but I am pleased with my efforts so far. I see it as the beginning of a long journey.”
