A FAMILY-run business which restores forgotten vehicles is returning for a second TV series.

Bangers and Cash focuses on the Mathewson’s auction house in Thornton-le-Dale, run by Derek Mathewson, along with his sons Paul and Dave, grandsons Charlie and Jack and office manager Sarah Crabtree.

Mathewson’s search for forgotten motors in the garages, barns and sheds of the nation before bringing them back for auction. Each episode reveals the passion that goes into classic car collections and the history revealed behind every find.

Derek said: “We agreed to do a second series due to the popularity of the first. Viewers can expect similar, plus more interesting vehicles and scenarios. We have seen a massive increase in foot traffic - which is fantastic for the local economy.”

A spokesperson for producer’s AirTV said: “This observational documentary series was a ratings success for Yesterday. Stand-out stories from the debut series included the discovery of a rusty wreck of an Austin Mini Copper in a garage under piles of rubbish that sold at auction for a staggering £18,000.

“Series two promises to unearth even more amazing finds. Highlights include a rare and elegant 1960s’ Bentley S3, a classic Ford Fiesta XR2, which eventually goes for £5k over its reserve at auction to its first-ever owner who has nostalgically tracked it down, and a rare 1970s’ Sunbeam Lotus that has been rotting away in a farmyard for 29 years. As with every set of wheels featured in this series there’s a yarn behind the classic. The mixture of facts, nostalgia and great characters makes for great television.”

The second series of Bangers and Cash starts on Freeview channel Yesterday today (Thursday).
