A WOMAN who spent many years battling with anorexia is using her own experience to help others.

Kathryn Salt, 55, qualified as a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and eating disorder registered therapist after being affected as a teenager.

She said: “I was 17 when she developed an eating disorder which took many years to recover from.

“I can remember as a teenager being very aware of my weight and body image, which just spiralled out of control.

“There was no help at all back then and very little understanding about eating disorders.

“After making a full recovery, I was filled with the desire to help others to do the same.”

Kathryn added: “I have for many years wanted to use my own experience to help others, make a difference and turn my own experience into something more positive.

“Very sadly, there is still a great need for support in this area, which made me decide to train as a therapist.”

Kathryn, who is based in Scarborough, said she had experience working with young adults and has trained to work with people of all ages.

“My mission as a therapist is to help people struggling with eating disorders, taking one step at a time towards recovery,” she said.

“Eating disorders are very difficult to understand unless you have been through it yourself.

“The eating disorder is not actually about food but the underlying unresolved issues in your life that have not been worked through and also, blocked emotions which we find too painful to talk about.

“These disorders may be caused by deeper issues that remain unresolved. By approaching them in a holistic way, patients are able to recover and heal.”

Kathryn also works with people struggling with anxiety and depression using CBT .

She said: “There is a strong link between our thoughts, how we feel and our actions due to those thoughts and feelings.

“When we have a deeper understanding of this we can begin to make more sense of why we behave in certain ways, and how we can change our negative behaviour patterns.”

Kathryn offers one-to one counselling and telephone sessions. She also does a free 30 minute consultation.
