APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Talk - A talk entitled Tragedies, Ghosts & Murder was given by Jim Hall in the village hall on Thursday. The talk attended by about 30 people was well received and because of pressure of time only a little over half completed it is anticipated that a part two will be presented in the future. The next talk, entitled Christ Church a new Perspective by Joel Brookfield will be at 7.30pm on Thursday, February 27.

AGM - The AGM followed by an ordinary meeting of the Village Hall Management Committee were held in the village hall. Fundraising in the shape of the annual barbecue, The Big Breakfast series, the Christmas tea and Easter tea have were all very successful. The treasurer’s report indicated a healthy financial situation while the chairman commended all the committee’s work and proposed a vote of thanks to Roy Milestone for the many tasks he undertakes. In the ordinary meeting the school master rent was reviewed and it was decided that it would be in changed. Hire charges will remain the same. The annual Christmas tea will be held again starting at 3pm on Saturday, December 28.

History group - The group will be put on a photographic display to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the village hall between 1pm and 4pm on Sunday, December 1. There will be hundreds of photographs on display and a rolling slide show of more than 500 pictures. Free entry and refreshments.

AYTON

Christmas show - Ayton Village Hall is holding its annual Christmas show on Friday, December 20, at 7pm. Christmas entertainment featuring a host of local musicians, singers and entertainers. There will also be a bar and the ticket price of £7.50 includes a glass of wine. Tickets are available from Ayton library in advance or on the door. Phone Bev on 01723 865033.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The service this Sunday, December 1, at All Saints will be Holy Communion. Those attending may notice around 40 Christmas tree stands placed on the window sills, seats, and surfaces throughout the Church. The 3ft tall trees arrive late afternoon on Monday, December 2 to be put in these stands for decorating. This year there will also be several constructed trees with completely new themes. Following the preview evening on December 6 at 6.30pm the Church ‘Christmas Fest’ weekend continues with the Christmas Fair in the Village Hall on Saturday, December 7, starting at 2pm and the All Age Carol Service in Church on Sunday, December 8 at 4.30pm.

GILLAMOOR

Prize bingo - A prize bingo to raise funds for St Aidan’s Church, Gillamoor, takes place at Moorside Bar & Club, Kirkbymoorside, Shaw Drive on Tuesday, December 3. Eyes down 8pm.

GREAT EDSTONE

HUTTON LE HOLE

Quiz - A family pub quiz will be held at the Crown Inn, on Sunday, December 1, at 8.30pm. Entry £2, including a sandwich supper. Prize is a voucher to spend at The Crown. In aid of St Chad’s Church.

KIRKDALE

Quiz - This has become a regular feature of local life - although this may be the final quiz. A volunteer is sought to continue the custom. Quiz sheets will be available from all the usual local businesses for £1 each in aid of St Gregory’s Minster and St Hilda’s, Beadlam.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Bridge Club - The results from Tuesday, November 19. The North/South Winners were Mary Mortonson and Graeme Matthew with 66.37 per cent. In second place Gill and Trevor Hardcastle with 58.33 per cent. The winners East/West were Sue Pearson and Steve Lonsdale with 58.63 per cent. In second place Jane Baldwin and Valerie Hawkes with 53.57 per cent.

All Saints - The Christingle service at All Saints’ Church is on Sunday, December 1, at 6.30pm, taken by the vicar Rev Mark Brosnan and Rev Bridget Gillespie.

Christmas Market - It takes place on Saturday, November 30, from 10am to 3pm. More than 30 craft, handicraft and produce stalls in the main street and on both floors of the Memorial Hall. In the morning there will be craft activities for children in the library. Kirkbymoorside Brass Band will play in the Market Place from about 11am. Santa will be in his Grotto (Memorial Hall Dugout) from noon to 2pm. Free entrance. Face painting in the Memorial Hall.

Tuesday Group - The group will meet on Tuesday, December 10, at the Methodist Church, Jubilee Room, at 7.30pm. The meeting is entitled Outside In is a reflective service for Christmas leader is Jean and members are the tea hostesses.

Menzown meeting - Treasurer Mike Goslin gave an overview of the changing role of Sappers and (Royal) Engineers. The next meeting of Menzown will be the members’ Christmas dinner at the King’s Head on Monday, December 16.

All Saints - Winners of the 100 club draw for November were A Tweddle No 25 and J Wood No 17. The next draw takes place at the coffee morning in church on Saturday, December 7. The christingle service is on Sunday, December 1, at 6.30pm. Kirkbymoorside Primary School choir will join in the service. Each Wednesday during Advent there is a short time of quiet reflection with readings music and silence in preparation for the coming of God. The first Advent Oasis is Wednesday, December 4. The services are at 7pm in church.

Julian Meeting - It will take place at St Chad’s RC Church on Tuesday, December 10, at 6.30pm.

LEAVENING

Pudding evening - The pudding evening held last week in Leavening Church raised £300.51 for the two churches in Leavening. An enjoyable evening was had by all who attended. The organisers would like to thank everyone who made a delicious pudding.

Coffee morning - On Saturday, November 30, there is a Christmas coffee morning in Leavening Church. There will be mulled wine/coffee and mince pies, a raffle, stalls, including cakes, from 10am to noon. The Buckrose Youth Choir will be performing some special festive songs.

MALTON

Bridge club - Madge Allison and Rob Ashdown took first place in the latest session of Malton Bridge Club’s positional pairs competition with Mike Jackson and Philip Mason second, Charles and Hazel Ward third and Gill Oxendale and Sheila Johnson fourth. On Thursday the winners were Josie Halliwell and Sheila Miller in the North-South seats and Anne Butterworth and Charlie Callis as East-West.

Market - There will be a Christmas market with music at Jack Berry House in Old Malton Road, Malton, on Friday, December 6, from 2pm to 7pm, when there will be a raffle and refreshments.

NAWTON

Beckett Recreation Ground draw - The October winners in the 100 Club Draw were: £50 - No 120 R Smith, £30 - No 111 L Bloomfield, £10 - No 75 C Clements, £10 - No 71 J Berry.

PICKERING

Bridge club - In the latest session of bridge, the third of the teams of four competition, the winners were Trish Pearce, Stan Bough, Graeme Matthew and Anne Avery.

Draw - The Pickering Town Football Club weekly draw for week commencing November 18, were eight, 22 and 31 and there was no winner therefore next week the winner will receive £675.

RILLINGTON

Christmas lights - Rillington Village Christmas lights will be switched on by Cllr Nathan Garbutt-Moore on Thursday, December 5, at 6pm.

Bingo - £778 (including £300 in donations) was raised for Looby’s Lifeline at a prize bingo held in Woodlands Community Centre. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker Sue Nelson. The Christmas prize bingo at the centre will be held on Wednesday, December 11, for children’s cancer charities.

Quiz - Gary, Steve and Co were the winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz in the Fleece Inn. The jackpot was a rollover. Jennie will be hosting a Mega Quiz in the Fleece on Friday, November 29, at 9pm. Cash prizes to third place, cash jackpot and hot supper for only £2.

SCARBOROUGH

Concert - Scarborough Choral Society’s Christmas concert will take place on Saturday, December 14, at 7.30pm at Westborough Methodist Church, Scarborough. This will include a wide variety of seasonal offerings ranging from A light in the Stable - a Christmas cantata by Alan Bullard to the well-known Sheffield Village Carols. They are delighted to be joined by the Priory Handbell Ringers from Bridlington with their selection of pieces for your delectation. The next concert will be a performance of Rossini’s Stabat Mater together with Eternal Light A Requiem by Howard Goodall on Saturday, May 16.

SEAMER

Autumn fair - St Martin’s Church will be holding their annual autumn fair in the Memorial Hall on Saturday, November 30, from 2pm and 4pm. The event will include a raffle, tombola and bottle tombola, as well as a cake stall, as well as craft and other stalls. Admission is £1 and includes refreshments.

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Andrew presided and preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion for the feast of Christ the King. He announced that as part of this “stirring up” for St Martin’s the PCC had agreed to start a new venture in 2020 to hold a Sunday service in Crossgates and to bring the chance to worship, and to share fellowship to this part of the Seamer Parish. Sue Johnson and Clare Firth were the welcomers, Frances Simons assisted with the distribution of communion, and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano. Clare Firth and Elizabeth Stevens served refreshments.

Methodist Church - The service today was taken by Rev Bruce Russell. The vestry steward was Bob Jackman, the welcomer Ann Newham and the offering was taken by Sheila Grey. Joan Roue accompanied the singing on piano. Bible readings were given by Sheena and Allan Dunnington. During the service Holy Communion was taken. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Rev Dr Kevin Ridd. The Autumn fair is on Saturday 10.30am. Stalls include tombola, raffle, cakes, bric a brac etc.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s Church – The Rev Joe Kinsella officiated at the Holy Communion Service, assisted by Barbara Grice with the chalice. Organist was Martin Monkman and the Gospel was read by Keith Usher, who also acted as sidesman with assistance from Betty Flinton and Sue Mennell. Coffee was served at the close of the service by Barbara Grice.

Church roof – Tender has been received and accepted for the installation of an alarm system, and work on this will commence shortly. The architect’s report on the roof has also been received and tenders have gone out to three specialist contractors. The final date for receipt of these is Monday, December 9, after which the total amount required for repairs will be known. In view of the closeness of Christmas, an appeal will not be formally put into place until the New Year, after which an intense programme of fundraising will be undertaken. In the meanwhile, the Parochial Church Council will be greatly appreciative of any donations for the Church Roof Appeal.

Lights switch on - Come along to the village hall on Sunday, December 1, at 6pm. Admission is only £1 which includes tea or coffee. There will also be a raffle. Come along, enjoy the tree lights and help the village Hall at the same time.

Sherburn Village Hall - Christmas Quiz on Thursday, December 19, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Teams of up to four people. Cost £2 per ticket which includes tea or coffee and a mince pie. There will also be a raffle. For tickets contact Sue Pollard.

Methodist News - The Tuesday Coffee Morning hostess was Elizabeth Aconley and kind donations for the coffee continue to given to cover the transport cost for the shoeboxes. Sunday worship was led by the Worship Team. Pre worship choruses were led by Jean Brown and Chris Cade. Sandra Cade led the opening prayers and read from the book of Jeremiah. Jean Brown read a verse from the book of Hebrews. Kim Canterbury read Psalm 46 and Jean read from Colossians. Prayers were led by Liz and Sandra. After worship refreshments were enjoyed in the Hall.

Senior Citizen Luncheon Club - After enjoying a lovely lunch, members enjoyed a singalong with Bill Hyndford assisted by Barbara Grice. Thank you so much to both of them who stepped in at such short notice when John Porter was unfortunately unable to join them. Next month is the Christmas lunch on Wednesday, December 18. They are very grateful to the parish council for their generous grant to support this event. Please meet from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. This is open to all senior citizens, maybe you haven’t been before, this could be your opportunity to give it a try. A warm welcome and a delicious meal will be waiting for you. SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - The Hackness Ladies Choir gave an excellent concert to the Sinnington People’s Guild on Tuesday, November 19. Conducted by Ralph Earwicker and accompanied by Elsie Dobson, the choir sang some new arrangements of well known songs. Solos were sung by Sharon Parsons and Sarah Guthrie. A violin accompaniment was given by Griselda James. Kay Metcalf welcomed and thanked the choir. The collection, to be divided between the Home and Overseas Missions, totalled £139.75. Supper was served. The next meeting is on Tuesday, December 3, at 7.15pm. The Rev Dr Lyn Groves will lead us into Advent.

TERRINGTON

Quiz - There is to be a Christmas quiz in aid of LIAM in Terrington Village Hall on Saturday, December 7. Doors open at 7pm. Teams to be of one to six people and it is £5 per person to take part. WESTOW

Thank you - The organisers of the annual Westow Cricket Club Christmas fair would like to thank everyone who had a stall, attended, donated prizes and baking, helped on the day or helped in any way to make the fair a great success. The event raised more than £430 for cricket club funds.

Sale - There will be a second hand book stall in Westow Cricket Pavilion, on Saturday, November 30, and Sunday, December 1, from 10am to 1pm. There are some good quality books. Tea, coffee, home-baking and bacon rolls will also be available. Everything is in aid of the cricket club and pavilion.

Film Night - The next film night is on Friday, December 6, in the village hall showing Stan & Ollie at 7pm.

WI MEETING

Thornton-le-Dale - The annual meeting took place with the election of new committee members and president. The meeting started with reports from the secretary Wendy Scoble, the treasurer Sue Shuttleworth followed by the president Margaret Smith who duly stepped down from her duties. A new committee was elected and once again Margaret Smith was elected as president. It is the group’s turn to host the area Christmas party and invites have been sent out to other local WI groups. The party will take place Friday, December 6 and will take place of the regular WI meeting. The Christmas tree fairy workshop was attended by 11 members who all went home with a new fairy for their tree. The group will be sending toiletries to the Rainbow Centre in Scarborough for their Christmas shoeboxes. The evening finished with a short quiz and refreshments.

YCA MEETINGS

Rillington - 15 members and one guest attended. The November Newsletter had been circulated to all members. Three members reported on the autumn meeting they had attended at Escrick and spoke favourably of the new venue. The date of the Christmas dinner at the Dawnay Arms has been changed from December 12 to December 4 as a number of members are unavailable on December 12. Jenny Ireland and Louise Tindall were the hostesses. Marjorie Grice sold tickets for the raffle which was won by Irene Mansell. Following the business meeting Tracey Ireland demonstrated making a Christmas wreath with a difference. Chocolates were tied on to a wreath ring with curling ribbon and embellished with more ribbon and a bow. Sue Butler thanked Tracey for a fun and entertaining evening.

Wombleton - June welcomed 21 members and two guests. The minutes of the September meeting were read and approved. The 2020 programmes were distributed along with a reminder about the 2020 Ryedale Show Meeting to be held in Wombleton Village Hall on November 25. Two lists were circulated to members, one for suggestions for different classes for next year’s show and the other for members to write the type of food they were bringing to the Christmas Party on December 17. June reiterated the call for a new treasurer and chairman to take over in 2020 and stressed to members that unless new officers came forward the branch would be forced to close which nobody wants to happen. It was suggested that if anyone was prepared to take over for a year it would help and that a maximum of three years in any position was a good idea. The competition for a pretty plate was won by Daisy with 10 pts. The raffle was drawn. Louise introduced the speaker for the evening, Sophie Smith who owns and runs The Bakehouse in the Barn in Hovingham. Sophie gave a humorous, anecdotal potted history of her life in the catering industry culminating in her present enterprise. She then demonstrated the making of her signature Tunisian Orange Cake and provided members with a tasty sample of one she had baked earlier. Recipes were distributed to each member. Sophie invited questions from the floor and thanked us for inviting her to our meeting. Louise thanked Sophie for her amusing talk and demonstration.
