WILDLIFE lovers have expressed their dismay after two swans were found dead after reportedly been shot near Old Malton.

The adult swans were found in fields on Saturday afternoon on Borough Mere Lane.

Michelle Palmer Wheeler, who found the birds, said she had been walking her dog when she had heard shooting.

“We went to investigate and there were geese flying above in distress too,” she added.

“We saw the swans which landed in such a mess, as if they had been shot out of the sky, however, couldn’t get over the water to investigate properly and didn’t want our dog to pick them up, but we could see they weren’t breathing.”

Michelle said she had taken photos of the swans and contacted the police and RSPCA.

“It’s such a shame to lose two beautiful birds like this, whether they were directly shot or hit the power lines in panic because of the many gun shots.”

Wildlife expert Jean Thorpe said swans do hit over head power lines and often in pairs as flying together.

“Mute swans are a protected species and it is illegal to shot or harm them,” she added.

“There are at least three breeding pairs in the Malton area. Local people are very fond and protective of the swans that live here and will be sad to hear of the fate of this pair. “

A police spokesperson said: “It was reported on Saturday evening that two swans were found shot in a field on Borough Mere Lane, Old Malton between 5.30pm and 6.15pm. It’s been passed to a wildlife officer for further investigation.”
