SELBY College have formed a new partnership with Super League team Hull FC.

The programme has relaunched this autumn to new first-year students as well as existing students.

For the past two years, Selby College has been working alongside Hull FC Foundation and they are "delighted" to announce that all learners will now have the opportunity to train and play rugby league.

The Selby College team will play in the Yorkshire 2 League, following training sessions aimed at creating and building a team to compete in the 13-a-side competition.

Other parts of the scheme organised with the Hull FC Foundation include weekly training sessions and match day games, as well as lunchtime touch rugby sessions and tournaments for both men and women to encourage more students to get involved with the sport.

Selby College sport students also have unique access to the Hull FC training ground for ‘masterclass’ sessions from the club’s coaches, sports scientists, strength and conditioners and physiotherapists.

The students involved will have the opportunity to observe first-team training sessions and Super League matches at the KCOM Stadium, Hull FC's home ground.

There may also be work placement opportunities to help students take the next step in their sporting careers.

Carla Cantrell, subject area manager for sports and public services at Selby College said of the partnership: “We are excited to further develop and strengthen the partnership with Hull FC this year.

"It allows talented rugby league players to train and compete under the banner of a professional club with experienced coaches in both a league and cup format.

"The players will also be completing their studies here at Selby College, and so the rugby league opportunities are an excellent addition to their study programme”.

Hull FC’s lead coach for the Selby College programme Richard Tate said: “We’re really pleased to continue our involvement with the College after a successful few years”.

“We’ve given a lot of students the chance to learn basic skills in the game and now they have the chance to take part in competitive 13-a-side fixtures for the first time this year - after two years of hard work playing 7s and 9s rugby, they now have the chance to take their progression to the next level in the College league.

“Hopefully this continues to provide a pathway into playing sport at a higher education level when their time with the college comes to an end.”
