PASSENGERS will be transported back to the 1940s for the weekend when the Railway in Wartime returns to North Yorkshire Moors Railway next weekend.

The railway hosts the annual event from Friday, October 11 to Sunday, October 13, with a host of war-themed entertainment, including a pop-up show, live music, “British Restaurant” and re-enactment displays along its heritage railway line.

New for 2019 is the D-Day exhibition at Pickering station to mark the centenary anniversary – an immersive display for children highlighting the tense first 24 hours on the beaches of Normandy.

There will also be the usual parade through Pickering on Saturday at 11am and Sunday at 9.30am and a D-Day Celebration Night Out with cabaret wartime cocktails and local beers in the evening.

At Levisham station, there will be an interactive show, Other Side of the Tracks, showing the story about a child evacuee, Jane, as she overcomes challenges and

adventures in the East Yorkshire countryside.

The station will also host a “British Restaurant”, based on a national wartime initiative set up by Flora Solomon when church halls, town halls and school halls served basic food items at low prices.

Re-enactors will also demonstrate troop training and cooking authentic rations.

There will also be a “walk-in” trench for the public to find out more about life in the trenches.

Grosmont and Goathland stations will feature authentic fairground rides, military vehicles, a vintage sweet shop and children’s games from Eden Camp museum.

John Bailey, trust chairman at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, said: “Railway in Wartime is a great event for families and shows youngsters what life was like during World War Two, whilst also raising vital funds for the railway.

“We host up to 850,000 passengers every year and the only way we can continue to do this is with the help and support of our amazing visitors.”
