LANDSCAPES by two Scarborough artists go on show at the Inspired by… gallery at Danby later this month.

Fragile Enchantments features the work of Rob Moore and Wendy Tate, and can be seen at the gallery at The Moors National Park Centre at Danby from Saturday, October 19 to Tuesday,November 12.

Wendy said: “Both of us come from a landscape background, but I tend to be more of a realist and perhaps a little bit more romantic and sublime, but in a contemporary way – my work is to do with my emotional connection with the landscape.

“I try to communicate what it communicates to me: I have to be quite moved by what I’m painting. I paint mostly from photographs – my camera is my sketchbook – trying to imbue my paintings with some sense of the emotion that I had when I was there.

“Sometimes that can be dark and moody, sometimes it can be joyous – I like the idea of celebrating creation: in the midst all the fear and confusion we live with, the world is still an amazing place.”

Rob added: “I came to landscape painting fairly late, about 10 yeas ago, when I moved to this area. I immerse myself in the landscape, but the paintings I do in the studio are more imaginative, based on a history of observing things over those 10 years; they’re more abstracted than Wendy’s work.

“They can be read on two levels: for the beauty of the colour and the texture and the marks, or they could be looked at for the little clues in there that are concerned about the landscape, and what climate change is doing to it.

“So in some, you’ll find hot suns, or perhaps a boat that is either fixed in a safe harbour or has become unstable because water levels are rising.”

There will be a ‘meet the artists’ event at the gallery from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday, October, 19 and on Saturday, October 26, from 11am to 4pm, when Wendy and Rob will lead a nature-inspired print workshop using landscape as a theme to produce a mixed-media artist’s book..
