THE Bath Road flyover by Pier Approach is closed to traffic heading eastbound this morning over concerns for the carriageway's condition.

The westbound stretch of the road remains open.

Thousands of people are due to take advantage of the forecast good weather by heading for the beach this weekend.

It is understood a 'void' has opened beneath the carriageway.

A water main leak has been found and Bournemouth Water are on site.

A statement about the issue has now been given by BCP Council.

Bournemouth Echo:

A spokesperson said: "Following routine maintenance works at Bath Road an urgent inspection is required to assess the condition of the road structure adjacent to Pavilion.

"The road will be closed to eastbound traffic whilst this investigatory work is undertaken.

"Diversion routes are in place to ensure no eastbound traffic on Bath Road across the Pier flyover.

"Westbound traffic is being maintained.

"These works are essential to ensure the safety of road users and those carrying out the investigation."

Gary Powell, head of highways and transportation for BCP Council, said: “During a routine highway inspection our teams detected some issues with the road structure.

"This has temporarily been made safe by use of a metal plate on the road.

Bournemouth Echo:

"To ensure the safety of the travelling public an urgent investigation is required to establish the extent of the problem.

“It’s unfortunate this has happened ahead of the bank holiday weekend and we are doing all we can to manage traffic flows.”

This afternoon, he added: "We quickly established a water main leak in the area.

"Bournemouth Water are now on site undertaking the urgent repair work in order for the road to be re-opened."

A signposted diversion will be in place and the bus operators and emergency services have been informed.

Access to Bath Road North and South car parks will be maintained, as well as access to the BIC and businesses to the west of the Pier flyover.

A further update will be provided once the inspection work is complete.

Bournemouth Echo:

Representatives from Morebus say the closure will be in force from 10am, meaning services 13, X1, X2, X3 and X6 won't be able to serve Bournemouth Square (Gervis Place).

Buses will drop off and pick up from Westover Road instead.

  • An earlier version of this article stated Pier Approach was also closed. It has now been clarified that Pier Approach remains open.
