THE area’s only open air swimming pool is celebrating its 50th anniversary this week.

Helmsley Open Air Swimming Pool was built in 1968 as a freshwater heated pool. It was officially opened by the then Duke of Norfolk in 1969.

It remains one of only a handful lidos in the country and received substantial funding last year to enable the pool lining and surrounding to be replaced.

Pool manager Charisse Charlton said: “We have a new pool tank, a new surround and fencing so we are now fundraising to replace the changing rooms, toilets, showers and office.

“We had a really good summer last year with the heatwave and with last month’s hot weather lots of people have been to the pool and loved it so much they have been back even when

the weather hasn’t been so great.”

Charisse said as a charity the pool was continuing to fundraise and had a donation box for visitors to contribute.

“We are running a raffle and have various events, including a moonlight swim on August 15,” she added.

“We appreciate any support and donations people can give.”

To mark the 50th anniversary, the pool is hosting an evening for trustees and benefactors to show them the work that has been done and future plans.

Charisse said: “The pool is a great facility for the local community to have.

“We are grateful for the support we have received and look forward to celebrating the pool’s 50th anniversary.”
