APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Village history walk - A short walk suitable for all abilities will start from the village hall at 10.45am on Sunday, August 4, and conclude at noon. This event is part of The North York Moors Breath of Fresh Air programme.

Produce Exchange - The next Appleton Produce Exchange (APEX) will be held on Saturday in the grounds of the village hall, from 10am to noon, on Saturday, August 3. Baps and tea will be available.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance - A wonderfully typically English Sunday afternoon entertainment comprising Betjeman, jaunty music, tea and cakes galore and a raffle was held in the ground of The Hall Cottage. The garden party raised £1,800 for YAA. A big thank you to Jamie Walton and Joel Brookfield for their generosity and organisational skills.

BROMPTON BY SAWDON

Brompton & District Gardening Club - The 37th annual show will be held at Brompton-by-Sawdon Village Hall on Sunday, August 11. Entry forms and payments can be received in the hall, between 6pm and 8pm on the previous evening, Saturday, August 10. No late entries can be accepted. Exhibits can then be staged on the Sunday, from 9am to 9.45am, after which the hall will cleared for judging. You don’t have to be a member of the club to take part. The show will be open to the public from 2pm; entrance £1.50 for adults and children free.

Church - The service at All Saints on Sunday, August 4, will be Communion, at 11am.

Fete - The annual church garden fete in the grounds of Brompton Manor House on Sunday, August 4, from 2pm. Advance duck numbers are now on sale at Glaves the Butchers as well as Lizzy’s Arty Fact and Fiction. Ducks can also be sponsored on the day prior to the big race which starts at about 3.30pm. The owner of the winning duck gets £25.

CROPTON

Fair - St Gregory’s Church, Cropton, held its summer fair in the village hall on July 27 and had a most successful day. Delicious afternoon teas were served and the many stalls were kept busy. The PCC thank everyone who donated generously and a magnificent total of £543.70 was raised.

Village Hall - The next event in the hall is on Tuesday, August 6, at 10.30am to noon, for the monthly coffee morning.

FADMOOR

Gillamoor & Fadmoor Show - The show will be held in Fadmoor Village Hall on Saturday, August 3, on Fadmoor green, from 2pm to 4pm, with ice cream, tea and cakes. Sports for children start at 2.30pm. Evening barbecue and games in the village hall and Jim and Christine’s garden from 7pm.

FARNDALE

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive at 7pm on Friday, August 9, in the Farndale Village Hall. This is change of date from that planned due to another event. In September, the domino drive will revert to the first Friday.

Schedules – Farndale Show takes place on August Bank Holiday Monday and the schedules are now available usual places including BATA Kirkbymoorside, Grace Lane Vets (now at Kirkbymoorside) and the Feversham Arms Inn, Farndale, and online at farndale.community/farndale-show/ or email secretary@farndaleshow.co.uk. This year there are many new classes and the children’s section is free to enter. Closing date for entries is Saturday, August 10.

GREAT EDSTONE

St Michael’s - Service at St Michael’s Church for the month on August are Sunday, August 4, morning praise at 11am, taken by Rev Bridget Gillespie. Sunday, August 18, Holy Communion at 11am taken by Rev Michael Stephens. The Make Way service is on Tuesday, August 27 at 7pm.

HOVINGHAM

Market - The Hovingham village market will be held on Saturday, August 3, from 10.30am to 1.30pm, with more than 60 stalls selling local food and crafts. Guest stalls are Debbie Thompson Art with sterling silver and fashion jewellery, the Whole Hogge Company selling photographs with added art and Rigby and Rhys with soft furnishing for dogs. Also “What’s to be done with her” with new dresses and dungarees from Alyson. The community stalls are North Yorkshire Rotters with advise on green garden habits and Ryedale People Free Fridge reducing food waste and supporting those who need food. The cafe is being run by Hovingham Bowls Club and the volunteer Market Manager is Murray Stewart.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - There will be a family pub quiz at the Crown Inn on Sunday, August 4, at 8.30pm. Entry £2, including a sandwich supper. Prize is a voucher to spend at The Crown. Event in aid of St Chad’s Church.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Coffee morning - Two coffee mornings with table top sales will take place on August 7 and 28, from 9.30am to noon, at the Methodist Church. Tables £5. To book, phone Anne on 07814 896826.

Open show - Kirkbymoorside Horticultural Society is in need of tombola prizes for the stall at this year’s open show. Phone Jill Hugill on 01751 431670, Viv Webster on 01751 431316 or email maureenrolphnews@talktalk.net. The show is on Saturday, September 21, in the memorial hall. Entries are taken of morning of the show until 10.30am. In total there are some 130-odd classes. Schedules are available from Jill Hugill or if you would like one posting contact Maureen Rolph. The society always welcome extra pairs of hands to help at the show, setting up the staging on the Friday evening or stewarding.

Club 100 - The draw takes place at All Saints Church at the monthly coffee morning on Saturday, August 10, from 9.30am to noon. Winners on July draw were C Haynes No. 11 and L Goslin No. 4. Forms are available from the Parish office in Crown Square.

All Saint’s Church - The parish pilgrimage takes place on August 10 and 11. This is the annual parish pilgrimage when they visit all five of the churches by foot car, bicycle or any means of transport for worship and refreshments. It starts at St Michael’s, Great Edstone, at 10am, leaving at 10.45am. All Saints, Kirkbymoorside, service at 12.15pm, leaving 1.30pm, on to St Aidan’s Gillamoor, 3.15pm, leave 4.15pm, finishing at St Mary’s, Farndale, for service and barbecue at 7pm. On the Sunday, August 11, they meet at Monkett House, Farndale, at 12.30pm, and the final service of worship at St Nicholas, Bransdale, at 3pm.

Marie Curie - On Sunday, August 11, Sleightholmedale gardens will be open and members of the Kirkbymoorside support group will be serving teas, from 1pm to 5pm.

Library - Monday, August 5, from 2.30pm to 3pm, storytime. Free for under fives and their parents/carers. Wednesday, August 7, from 10.30am to 11.30am, children’s play session. Free children’s activity, for ages two to six. No need to book.

Camera club - The Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met for an illustrated talk by Steve Bell on astro photography. He not only showed some of his remarkable images but explained how members can take their own photographs of the night sky. The next meeting at the Moorside Bar and Club is on Thursday, August 1, which will be the annual creative competition.

Environment group - At the Repair Café, they dealt with a table lamp, a tape recorder, a child’s buggy, an umbrella, a fleece, six pairs of trousers that needed shortening, a lawn mower, hedge trimmer, money box, wooden chair, a broken drawer and an alarm clock. BBC Radio York came along and did a spot on the group. One of the volunteers also mended the sink top in the Moorside Room. KIRKDALE

Church Services - St Gregory’s Minster will continue to have sung Evensong on the second Sunday of each month at 6pm until October. On the other Sundays will have a Choral Eucharist at 11am. Other, Sunday and daily services in the benefice are shown in the magazine or on the notice board by the church.

Quiz Sheet - The next quiz sheet is planned for nearer Christmas. Organisers apologise if you have been disappointed with there not been a summer quiz sheet.

LASTINGHAM

Book launch - Thanks to all those generous folk who attended the launch of Mike Matson’s new book, In Cedd’s Footsteps...The Life and Journals of James Salman, Vicar of Lastingham 1890-1904, on Thursday, June 27, at The Blacksmith’s Arms. Thanks also to Pete and Hils who provided such a splendid buffet supper. All proceeds from this hardback book will be donated to a charity for the Homeless and £870 has been raised so far. MALTON

Malton and District Flower Club - At the July meeting members were enthralled by a demonstration by Kath Gibson entitled Inspirational Moments, she drew from important milestones in life and illustrated them with six stunning arrangements using both forest and garden flowers. The club’s next, and subsequent meetings, will be held at Malton Rugby Club on Tuesday, September 17, and features a demonstration by Carys Harrison entitled Forage, Weave, Create. New members welcome.

Bridge club - Dave Sonley and Charlie Callis won the latest session at Malton Bridge Club ahead of Audrey Shaw and Gladys Thompson in second place. Mike Jackson and Philip Mason finished in third place with Terry Herbert and Richard Hilton fourth.

Netball - A walking netball group has been set up in Malton at the sports centre. Aimed at the over 50s, and supported by All England Netball, this new group already has a lot of interest. No one is excluded and there is no age limit either - all welcome. The group would like to reach out to more women. The session is run by Kate Parker, a fully-qualified walking netball host, on Thursdays, from from 5pm to 6pm, costing £3.

PICKERING

Weekly draw - The numbers for the weekly draw for week commencing July 22 were five, two and 19, and there was no winner. Therefore the pot will be £450 next week.

Flower club - Members of Pickering and District Flower Club have been treated to some wonderful demonstrations. In May they welcomed Jean McClure whose title was “Strictly Jeanious”, the designs were beautiful and a great evening was had by all. On July 24 they saw Jo Purdy make some beautiful designs titled “The Blue Planet” with many flowers from Binnington Blooms. In June the club outing was to Wolds Way Lavender. Members and guests have also enjoyed an Easter “foam free” workshop with Audrey Foster where more than 30 people attended. Still to come this year is a practice night on August 28, the title being “Diamonds – 60 Years of NAFAS” followed by a demonstration by Susan Hall called “Something New & Recycled” on September 25, then an Autumn Wreath workshop with Kymm Queen from Queens Flowers at Beadlam Grange. Lastly there is a Christmas themed practice night on November 27, using among other things no more than £5 worth of supermarket flowers. The club has been raising much needed funds this year and thanks to all those who have supported it. The cake stall raised £84.40, the coffee morning £180 and the quiz £96, the prize winners being 1st Mrs T Critchley, Allerston 2nd Mr Humpleby 3rd Mrs A Wilson, Appleton-le-Moors. Bridge Club - In the latest session of duplicate bridge, the Handicapped Summer Competition, the winners were Tricia Pearce and Stan Bough with 57.99 per cent. In second place with 57.64 per cent Graham Burgess and John Bramall. In third place Isa Eggleston and Jackie Foggin with 51.21 per cent.

RILLINGTON

Bingo - £490 was raised for Marie Curie at a prize bingo held in Woodlands Community Centre. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker Sue Nelson. There will be no prize bingo in August but they will resume in September.

Quiz - Four teams playing for £34 took part in Jennie’s Mega Quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners with 69.5 points were Backtouchers + Mike, Fiona and Col, second were The Who + Pete (64.5) and third were Team @ the Bar (59). The £8.50 jackpot was won by Sue’s Crew. Jennie’s next Mega Quiz will be on Friday, August 9. Gary, Steve and Co were the winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz and also won the jackpot.

Charity quiz - Mike Williams will be hosting his first charity quiz of the season in the Fleece Inn on Friday, September 6, at 7.30pm, for Heslerton Sports Club. Entry is £12 per team of four and includes a hot supper. Entry forms available from Mike at 30 Low Moorgate, Rillington or Castle News in Malton.

Show - Schedules are now available from local businesses for Rillington and District Horticultural and Industrial Society’s 96th Annual Show which will be held in the village hall on Saturday, September 7. With more than 170 classes to chose from there is something to suit all ages. Entry forms to be returned to the show secretary no later than Monday, September 2.

Business - A new business is opened in the village on Thursday, August 1. The Shearing Shed, a hair salon, is to be found in what was previously Confetti bridal shop at 23 Scarborough Road.

SEAMER

Methodist Church - The service was taken by Christine Herbert. The organist was Doreen Lawson, vestry steward Bert Blower and the welcomer was Margaret Neave who also took the offering. Bible readings were given by Sheena Dunnington and Allan Dunnington. There is no service here this Sunday as they are joining friends at Ayton chapel at 10.45am. The preacher at this church on August 11 will be Michael Earnshaw. The monthly coffee morning is on August 10 at 10.30am.

St Martin’s - The Vicar, Rev Andrew Moreland, led both morning services. At the first service Edna Burton accompanied the hymns and read, Dot Francis was the sidesperson and Sue Johnson and Julie Stephenson served refreshments. At the second service Steve Raettig led the intercessions and he and Becky Cremer led the sung worship.

Coffee morning at Irton - It takes place on Saturday, August 3, the Friends of Irton is holding a coffee morning with a cake stall and tombola at Alice Cottage (off the lay-by) to raise funds for St Martin’s roof.

SHERBURN

Community club - Yoga every Monday, from 7pm to 8pm. All ages and abilities welcome. Gin Tasting Experience on Friday, August 9 at 8pm to 11pm. Dona Bell - An Evening of Mediumship on Thursday, November 14, at 7.30pm. Tickets £10.

Marie Curie Event - Open museum and gardens event on Sunday, August 25, from 11am to 4pm at Grange Farm, East Heslerton. £10 per person, under 16s free. There will be light refreshments and a raffle.

St Hilda’s Church – Rev Joe Kinsella officiated at Holy Communion. He was assisted by Barbara Grice with the chalice. Martin Monkman played the organ and sidespersons were Betty Flinton and Barbara Grice. Coffee was served by Keith Usher and helpers. The next service t St Hilda’s will be the Morning Worship on Sunday, August 11, at 10.30.m, led by Barbara Grice. There will be no Morning Worship on Sunday, September 8, but there will be a “Pet Service” at the church at 2pm.

Methodist News - The coffee morning hostess was Judith Ruston. Sunday Worship was led by the Worship Team and the preacher was Christine Fenwick. Chris Cade led an opening time of praise and Sandra Cade the Prayers of Praise. The gospel reading of the Good Samaritan was by Liz Aconley.

The offertory prayers were led by Jean Brown. Next week at 10.30am they will be having a Leprosy Mission Sunday service with James Greig, regional co-ordinator of the Mission. Following the worship there will be ‘Lunch for Leprosy’ at noon.

Next Steps Coffee Morning - Don’t sit at home alone. You are invited to join them at Sherburn Village Hall on Tuesdays from 9.30am to 11.30am. Local free transport is available if needed.

Community café - It is open at the village hall each Thursday, from 9am to 11.30am. There are play facilities for the children. Proceeds are for village hall funds.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Flower festival - All Saints’ Church held a successful flower festival on July 13 and 14. Many visitors were able to view the beautiful flower displays which had been created by individuals and local organisations. The homemade cakes were appreciated by the visitors. A “Songs of Praise” service concluded the festival on Sunday evening led by Rev Sally Gough. Thanks go to all who provided the flowers; cakes for refreshments and to the many helpers who made the weekend so enjoyable. The festival was organised by Joyce Helliwell, and a total of £830 was raised for church funds.

WOMBLETON

Domino drive - The next domino drive to raise funds for the village hall will be on Wednesday, August 7, at 7.30pm. £1.50 to play includes tea and biscuit.

WI MEETINGS

Appleton-le-Moors - Members enjoyed a fantastic presentation by the wardrobe mistresses of Little Theatre Middlesbrough about the vintage gowns in the theatre collection. Lots of fun and laughter as members tried on some of the gowns. A fascinating insight into the clothes of the past and the life of the theatre. Next meeting on September 25 is in aid of St Catherine Hospice. “Journey around the World” in conjunction with Spear Travel. Entry by ticket only, email appletonlemoorswi@gmail.com
