APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Parish council - The latest parish council was held on Thursday. Auditors have acknowledged the accounts and the bank balance in line with budget. Received thank you for providing community litter picker. Letters from NYMNPA about Spaunton Quarry open access and the views of CL162 Association were circulated and discussed. The decision about The Thorpe Dole was deferred to the next meeting which will be 6.30pm on September 5, in the village hall.

The Moors Inn - Two wonderful days of live music where held at the weekend for Macmillan’s Cancer Support. The first was “Bands, Beer & BBQ” on Saturday and then “Jazz on the Moors” on Sunday. Thanks to the organisers, The Moors Inn and all residents and visitors who supported a terrific weekend.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Picnic on the Butts - Unlike the previous date for the Picnic on the Butts back in May, last Saturday was a beautiful dry and sunny day with just the lightest of breezes. Anne Pilgrim Green kicked off the proceedings with the children in her role as storyteller, while Rob Sparkes from the Cranedale Field Study Centre netted some interesting water creatures from the beck for everybody to marvel at. The children’s scavenger hunt then took place.

Church - The service on Sunday, July 14, at All Saints will be Morning Prayer. This starts at 11am and will be taken by Dr Don Jones. Messy Church for children, who need to bring an adult with them, is on Saturday, July 13, at Hutton Buscel Village Hall. It starts at 4pm. The Bishop of Whitby, Paul Ferguson, will be at Brompton on Tuesday, July 16, to confirm five people starting at 7pm. All

BULMER

Bridge Club - The results of the Bulmer Bridge Club Competition held on Thursday, July 4 were: 1st Sylvia Haines and Gill Oxendale 67.2 per cent; 2nd Thelma Hardware and Tom Nutman 66.4 per cent.

CROPTON

Open garden - The open garden at Fernwood, Cropton, on June 29 raised a total of £850 for York Against Cancer. On a lovely summer’s day the garden was a picture with amazing colour, and it was greatly admired. Thanks to all the visitors.

Village Hall - The coffee morning on July 2 was very well attended. Tea and cakes were served by committee members and friends.

HOVINGHAM

Market - Hovingham Village Market was held last Saturday and the sunny warm weather brought out many visitors. The guest stalls all did well and there was a lot of interest shown on the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust stall. Slingsby Ducks sold ducks for the race on Saturday, July 13, in aid of Friends of Slingsby School and they even had two children dressed as ducks running around, which must have been very hot. The £1 a minute for the village clock made more than £100 and the cafe run by Friends of Hovingham School was extremely busy. The next market will be on Saturday, August 3, from 10.30am to 1.30pm.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Fete - There will be a fete on the green on Sunday, July 14, at midday. Listen to the Swinton Excelsior Silver band. Usual stalls, games and the duck race at 3pm.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Bridge club - The result from Tuesday, July 2. North/South winners were Janet Sutor and Sue Shuttleworth with 54.3 per cent. In second place Peter Small and John Mortonson with 52.3 per cent. East/West winners were Tony and Bo Simpson with 62.8 per cent. In second place Graeme Matthew and Mary Mortonson with 57.2 per cent.

Summer fair - All Saints will host its summer fair on Saturday, July 13, from 2pm to 4pm, at the Moorside Bar & Club.

Ryedale Festival - The Ryedale Festival concert in All Saints Church is on Wednesday, July 17.

Camera club - The Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club held its AGM on June 20 where a proposal to adopt pointless scoring for the club, mono and creative competitions, and to introduce a monthly themed competition were accepted. Pointless scoring will be used with immediate effect. The themed competitions will start in September and the theme will be trees/flowers.

Coffee morning - Two coffee mornings with table top sales will take place on Wednesdays, August 7, and August 28, from 9.30am to noon, at the Kirkbymoorside Methodist Church. Come and join us for a cuppa and maybe pick up a bargain. Tables provided for £5. To book, phone Anne on 07814 896826.

Messy Church - The next meeting on Monday, July 15, in the Methodist Church, Piercy End, from 4pm to 6pm for adults and accompanied children. Storytime - Youngsters are invited to Kirkbymoorside library on Monday, July 15, from 2.30pm to 3pm. Free for under fives.

Heritage Day - On Saturday, July 20, from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Admission £2 and members will have displays and stories of local characters from Kirkbymoorside, including Ron Todd who had a programme made about “Kirkby’s Kingdom”, the Maw family and the travelling families from Kirby Mills. There will also be a dialect corner where people can learn more about Yorkshire Dialect and North Yorkshire County Archives will be there with their Pop-up Archives. In the evening at the chapel, they are having a special show “Twice Nightly” performed by actor Dominic Goodwin and singer Jessa Liversidge, based on the music hall and variety acts – comics and singers including Kirby’s own Herbert Carter. Tickets cost £5 each and there will be refreshments during the interval. Doors open at 7pm.

Tuesday Group - The last meeting before the break for the summer holidays is on Tuesday, July 9, at the Methodist Church Jubilee Room. It will be an evening for a get together for members. The tea hostesses will be Sonja and Daisy. The programme restarts again in the autumn. A thank you to all the guest speakers over the winter/spring sessions.

LASTINGHAM

Festival - A festival of the Northern Saints will run at St Mary’s Church, Lastingham, until Saturday, August 31. The festival will include an exhibition of the story of the Northern Saints, including St Cedd, founder of a monastery at Lastingham, and will offer special events including concerts, recitals, cream teas and workshops. Special events coming up at the church include: Saturday, July 20, at 7.30pm, The Ebor Singers with musical director Paul Gameson. “Dusk Songs - Music for a Summer’s Evening” is a programme of sacred songs as well as part songs by Elgar, Whitacre and Kerry Andrew. On Wednesday, July 24, at 11am (coffee served from 10.30am), there will be an organ recital by Tom Wrench, masters student at the University of Edinburgh and organ scholar at St Peter’s Episcopal Church in the city. The programme will include music by Lèon Boëllmann, Noel Rawsthorne and Saint-Saëns. Tickets £8. On Friday, July 26, at 7pm, Tales from the Dales - An evening with Adam Collier. Tickets £10.

MALTON

Bridge club - Ruth and Roger Mattingly had a big win at Malton Bridge Club on Wednesday with Charles and Hazel Ward taking second place. Mike and Annette Jackson finished in third place ahead of Gladys Thompson and Sheila Miller.

Church - An attempt is being made to reduce the amount of paper handed out on Sunday mornings as people arrive for Mass at St Leonard & St Mary’s RC Church. For an experimental period there will not be a music sheet handed out. Instead the hymn numbers will be displayed in the corner of church above the organ. Comments are welcomed. The parish is moving to a new programme to prepare children for First Reconciliation and Holy Communion that is family based. Enrolment forms are available from Fr Tim, from the back of church and at St Mary’s School. The Knights of St Columbia in York have donated a wooden park bench to each of the Catholic parishes. in Malton and Pickering. The bench at St Joseph’s in Pickering is on the terrace outside the church while in Malton the bench is at St Mary’s School. They thank the KSC for their generous gifts. Churches Together in Southern Ryedale – Ecumenical Study Group meets fortnightly at the home of Roger and Rosemary Hadfield and often use the York courses as a basis for study. Ryedale Foodbank - Can you help? Volunteers are needed to prepare and deliver packed lunches to school children during the weeks, July 22 to September 3. Phone 01653 697796 or email ryedalefoodbank@gmail.com In May the foodbank provided food for 274 individuals (as against 74 in the same month in 2018). Stocks have become somewhat depleted, so extra supplies would be very welcome. The most urgently needed items are: UHT juice and milk, jam, tinned meat incl. pies, tinned soup, tinned vegetables, cereal, tinned tomatoes, Pasta sauce, tinned potatoes/instant mash, tinned fish, rice, biscuits, sweets and chocolates and cat food. Items can be left in church and are delivered to the foodbank on a regular basis.

Information event - Dementia Care Matters is a leading UK organisation inspiring culture change in dementia care. Dementia – What it means to You, will take place on Wednesday, July 24, at 7pm, at St Michael’s Church, Market Place, Malton. It will be led by Rowena Mayman (Registered Manager, Health and Adult Services NYCC). Refreshments available. All welcome.

NAWTON

PICKERING

Draw - The numbers for Pickering Town Football Club Weekly Draw for week commencing July 1 were 20,

40 and 33. There were no winners but the winner for the monthly draw was Kath Hesleton who won £50.

Domino drive - Pickering Town Football Club will be holding a domino drive on Friday, July 19, at 7.30pm at the Recreation Club. All welcome.

Bridge club - In the latest session of duplicate bridge, the first of the Handicapped Summer Pairs, the winners were Madge Allison and Philip Mason with 54.75 per cent. In second place with 54.5 per cent were Rob Ashdown and John Bramall. In third place with 54.17 per cent were Terence Boyle and June Greener.

RILLINGTON

Quiz - Four teams playing for £34 took part in Jennie’s Mega Quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners with 55.5 points were Team @ the Bar + Gary & Rose, second were Honeymooners + Mike & Fiona (52) and third Sue’s Crew (48). The £9 jackpot was won by Sue’s Crew.

The winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz were Gary, Steve & Co. The jackpot was a rollover. The winners of a second Sunday night quiz were Team @ the Bar + Mike. The jackpot was another rollover. Jennie will be hosting a mega quiz on Friday with cash prizes to third place, cash jackpot and hot supper all for only £2.

SAWDON

Soup and Pudding Lunch - In recent weeks members have had very busy gatherings for the soup and pudding luncheons with plenty of chatting and catching up. All proceeds of the soup and pudding lunches go towards feeding the birds and general upkeep in the Sawdon Community Nature Reserve which is looking really great. Foxgloves, teasels (which goldfinch love to feed off) and many other wild flowers are showing their faces. The birds are very busy with their young feeding and getting ready for new life and members are sure that we have had a sighting of a turtle dove - very exciting. The next soup and pudding is on Tuesday, August 13, at 12.15pm as usual. Everyone welcome and it is handy to visit the Nature Reserve either before or after the lunch as it is only two minutes walk away from the village hall.

Cream tea and flower show - On Sunday, July 14, there will cream teas and a flower show in the village hall at 1.30pm. Schedules can be obtained from K Stockill on 01723 859613. Proceeds will

go towards Sawdon Village Hall.

Afternoon tea party - Nicky Jackson is holding an afternoon tea party in the village hall in aid of Pancreatic Cancer UK on Sunday, July 21. More details to follow on this one.

SEAMER

Methodist Church - The service was taken by Rev Emma Morgan. The vestry steward was Bert Blower, organist Doreen Lawson, welcomer Margaret Harris and the offering was taken by Margaret Neave. Bible readings were given by Eileen Burn who read from the second book of Kings, Bob Jackman read from Mark’s gospel and Emma read from Corinthians. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Rev Mary Jackman and Holy Communion will be observed. The monthly coffee morning is on Saturday at 10.30am.

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided and Reader Elizabeth Moreland preached at the 9.30am service of BCP Holy Communion. The churches in the Seamer, East Ayton and Cayton Joint Benefice have begun a series of sermons based on the title, The Names of God. Julie Stephenson and Frances Symonds were the welcomers, and Julie and Sue Johnson also served refreshments. Jim Baird assisted with the distribution of communion and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano.

Elizabeth Moreland preached again at the 11am service of Modern Worship. Tim Cremer led the intercessions and Liz Cremer read. Richard Fuller led the sung worship with John Taylor. Elizabeth Bradley was the welcomer and Helen Swallow served refreshments after the service.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s Church - The next service at St Hilda’s is on Sunday, July 14, at 10.30am led by Barbara Grice.

Community and sports club - Gin Night to be held on Friday, August 9. Please contact either the club or Facebook for tickets - more details to follow. Vinyasa Flow Yoga is every Monday from 7pm to 8pm. £7 per session mats are provided - male and female all abilities welcome. There are still vacancies on the committee - anyone interested should phone a committee member or the secretary.

Luncheon Club - The senior citizen lunch will be held at the Methodist Chapel Hall on Wednesday, July 17. The speaker will be Graham Hobson, regional co-ordinator for the Christmas Shoebox appeal who will be coming to update us on this valuable work. Meet from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. Messy church - This month’s meeting will be held outdoors in the garden at Forge Villa, 31 St Hilda’s Street, by the kind invitation of Chris and Sandra Cade. They will be treasure seekers, so come and join in the fun. A picnic tea is provided. Meet at 4.45pm. All welcome.

Methodist News - Your kind donations for your refreshments at the Tuesday coffee morning continue to be given to Water Aid in loving memory of Pamela Wild who worked so hard for this very worthy cause. They are nearly at their target and hope to hand over a cheque shortly. Craft club continues on Thursdays at 1.30pm, just come along and enjoy a cuppa while you do your craft work. The Sunday Worship was led by Rev Martin Calver who has been standing in for Rev Kevin Ridd during his sabbatical. The children made wonderful jewelled crowns to remind them that Jesus is the King of Kings. Coffee was enjoyed together in the hall afterwards. The service next Sunday at 10.30am will be led by the Worship Team. All welcome.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Flower festival - A flower festival with the theme of “The Glory of the Garden” will take place at All Saints’ Church. On Saturday, July 13, the church is open from 10.30am. There is no charge but donations are welcome. Light refreshments will be available throughout the day. The final day of the festival is Sunday, July 14, from 12.30pm following the morning service, then at at 6.30pm a Songs of Praise service will take place led by Rev Sally Gough. The flower festival is in conjunction with Yorkshire Village in Bloom, so if you are a local resident, or visiting Thornton-le-Dale this weekend come along to see some beautiful arrangements in a peaceful and tranquil ancient church.

Ladies Group - The July speaker Sue Woodcock gave a humorous account of “Being an Eccentric”, including her long career in the police force, sheep farming and as an author. WESTOW

Open house - Volunteers will be serving tea, coffee, home baking and bacon rolls in Westow Cricket Pavilion on Saturday, July 13, from 10am to 1pm, raising money for the cricket club and pavilion running costs. There will also be second hand books available by donation, also pool, dominoes and cards to play. There is lots of space for children to run around both inside and outside, with footballs available on request.

Car boot sale - There is a car boot sale at Westow Cricket Ground on Sunday, July 14, from 10am to 1pm. Pitches are £5 each. The cricket club will be serving tea, coffee, bacon rolls, home baking and cold drinks throughout the event. Money raised from the event is for cricket club funds.
