TWO designers who met while at school have opened their first shop together. Jeweller Emma Gale went on to study for a BA (Hons) in jewellery at Edinburgh College of Art, while Sallie Temple completed her BA (Hons) in fashion at Leicester Polytechnic, later discovering her love for weaving.

Both have been designing and making for many years, selling in galleries, shops and craft fairs. Venues have included Chelsea Craft Fair, Contemporary Applied Arts, Electrum Gallery and Selfridges.

Emma said they had decided to open the shop after one of the units in The Shambles in Malton became available. “Although working together with other artistic ventures, this is the first collaboration of the Gale and Temple brand,” she said.

“Having exhibited at various places we quite liked the idea of having our own retail space just here in Malton and able to just add new products as we make them - hopefully building up a local customer base and those visiting the town.

“This shop became available and we just thought it would be perfect for our products. I have my workbench in here so can make as well as having the shop open. We have always loved the Shambles as an eclectic mix of interesting bits ‘n’ pieces. Hopefully we are also adding something special to the street, and Malton as an up and coming place to visit.”

Emma said Gale & Temple is all about the creation of beautiful jewellery, scarves and homeware accessories with a classic contemporary feel.

“We will still also exhibit elsewhere as well as having our online shop which reaches out to customers all over the world - especially America where they seem to like our pure beeswax candles - made from the wax from Sallie’s bees,” she said.
