A NEW book about a Lastingham vicar is being launched next week.
In Cedd’s Footsteps: The Life And Journals Of James Salman, Vicar Of Lastingham, 1890-1904 is a new work by Lastingham author Mike Matson.
The book focuses on a transcription of the Salman Diaries (1890-1904) which were given to the parish by the Rev Salman when he left the village.
However, this is set within the context of biographical chapters detailing James’s life before and after those years.
The 235-page book features information about life in Lastingham at the end of the 19th century, including the arrival of a piped water supply, receipt of the first telegram and telephone call, cricket matches on Dr Ringer’s Field, soup kitchens for ironstone miners and parties in the Vicarage.
There’s also some notes on contemporary national events and more than 200 local family names in a useful index.
The launch is to be held at the Blacksmith’s Arms, Lastingham on Thursday, June 27 at 7pm. Copies will be available at the launch or from 01751 417834 thereafter.
All proceeds from sales will be donated to the PCC of St Mary’s Church Lastingham for a mission to the homeless.
