AN annual run which has raised thousands of pounds for a village school is marking its 12th anniversary.

The Castle Howard Trail Races welcomes runners of all levels and ages, with entries open for 10km and 5km Trail Race as well as on-the-day entries. The popular children’s races of 1km and 2km are also back.

The event is the main fundraiser for Welburn County Primary School and is organised by the PTA with support from Pickering Running Club.

All money raised goes directly to the school and help fund extra classroom equipment and subsidise excursions.

Dr Amy-Jane Beer, chair of the PTA said: “Over the last 11 years the race has raised over £30k for the school, and at a time when school budgets are under genuine pressure these funds raised are more critical now than ever before.”

The route of the race, which takes place on Sunday, June 30, takes in the grounds surrounding the house, offering a variety of terrain before crossing an 18th Century bridge and climbing to the Temple of Four Winds.

Race Director David Smith said: “It’s fantastic to have an event that appeals to runners of all levels and ages, from club runners to those taking part in their first organised run, and to be supporting a worthy, local cause in the process.

“We’re sure that those who are new to the event will be impressed with the stunning location of Castle Howard and we look forward to welcoming back an even bigger and better event in 2019.”

He added: “Once again we’re extremely grateful to Castle Howard for their continuing support in allowing us to raise such valuable funds for the school as well as our main sponsor ArkleBoyce Architects.”

“We are very fortunate to have had such fantastic support from the runners, partners and sponsors over the years. The school is extremely grateful and really value the continued support, not least for all that it has enabled them to provide to the children.
