A BAKERY owner is expanding and opening a second shop with a continental feel in Malton.

James Costello, who is a fourth generation baker, owns Costello’s bakery and coffee shop in Market Place.

His new venture, Salumeria, is a shop specialising in cooked and cured meats, cheese and other prepared foods, based in Navigation Wharf.

James said: “It’s incredibly exciting. Over the last few years, Malton really has developed on its position as the ‘Food Capital of the North’ and our new operation only helps to underline what everyone else is saying – for the best in food and drink, Malton is at the top of everyone’s list and we’re immensely proud to launch our new Salumeria somewhere so special.”

James said he would be focusing on British salumi with air-dried sausages, salami and hams, Costello’s own cooked meats and chorizo made in Yorkshire.

“It’s a fabulous building with a real food-lovers feel to it,” he said.

“The ambience is a perfect temperature and humidity for dry curing.

“It’s my own little meat and cheese cave.

“Even though we’re based here in the heart of Yorkshire, there’s a truly continental feel to the shop and, mixed with the Yorkshire magic that comes with our offering as well as Malton itself, we’re already getting incredibly positive feedback from everyone who’s already discovered us.”
