BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The service on Sunday, June 9, will be Morning Prayer taken by Dr Don Jones.

Village Hall - The annual meeting of Brompton Village Hall takes place on Tuesday, June 11. It starts at 7pm, in the hall, and is open anyone who is interested in the management of the building and the way it is used. Volunteers are especially welcome to join the established team. Following this the regular committee meeting starts at 7.30pm.

Open Gardens - The open gardens event takes place in Brompton on Sunday, June 16, starting at midday, at the village hall (YO13 9DL). Last map sales priced at £3 are at 4pm with the event finishing at 5pm.

BULMER

Bridge Club - The results of the Bulmer Bridge Club on Friday, May 24, first Jane Bartlett and Sheila Briske with 62.1 per cent and second David and Muriel Field with 60.4 per cent. The results of the meeting on Thursday, May 30, were a triple tie 1st Val & Michael Allen, Angela & Ian Barnett and Sandy & Peter Hill. All three pairs were at 61.4 per cent.

GILLAMOOR

Cream tea weekend - Cream teas will be available on June 8 and 9 at The Chapel. Everyone is welcome to join them for tea, coffee and delicious homemade cakes and scones from 9.30am to 5.30pm. Also the beautiful front garden of Dial House, opposite the chapel, will be open to visitors for a donation fee of £2. All proceeds go to Gillamoor School & Church funds.

GILLING EAST

Exhibition - On Saturday June 8, from 2pm to 4pm, as part of the Holy Cross Church Gilling Gift Day, there will be an exhibition of medieval pottery found in the parish. This is an opportunity to see and handle pottery from the 11th to the 16th centuries.

HOVINGHAM

Village market - Hovingham Village Market was held last Saturday with more than 60 stalls and a new look. The market has purchased new blue striped covers, which were put to the test when their was a shower of rain late morning. Guest stalls Yorkshire Blankets and Rosalind’s larder did well, as did the tombola for Freddie’s Fight. Sir William and Lady Worsley were there promoting Hovingham Hall, which is open to the public until June 29. Josh the busker was in fine voice and the cafe, run by the Hovingham Playground Group, sold out of everything. The market is held on the first Saturday of every month; the next one will be held on July 6.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Bridge club - The results from Tuesday, May 21, North/South winners were Trevor and Gill Hardcastle with 58.6 per cent and in second place Tim Johnson and Cynthia Metcalfe with 56.8 per cent. East/West winners were Graeme Matthew and Mary Mortonson with 63.9 per cent and in joint second place with 54.1 per cent were Bo and Tony Simpson and Clarissa Napier with Chris Brett. The result from Tuesday, May 28. North/South winners were Gill and Trevor Hardcastle with 61.1 per cent and in second place Anne Avery and George Goodall with 57.1 per cent. East/West winners were Graeme Matthew and Mary Mortonson with 63.8 per cent and in second place Tony and Bo Simpson with 54.1 per cent.

Moorside club - The fourth Father’s Day Classic Vehicle Show will be held on Sunday, June 16, from 11am to 4pm. Last year’s event attracted a wide selection of about 50 cars, lorries, tractors and motorcycles. There is no charge for anyone wishing to bring their vehicles for display. Open gardens - Kirkbymoorside In bloom open gardens will take place on Sunday, June 9, from 11am to 5pm. Tickets and maps will be on sale on the day from the base on the corner of West End in the centre of the town. £5 for adults and under 16 free with a cream tea included, served from 1pm, at the Quaker Meeting House in West End. This year organisers are delighted to welcome an ensemble from Kirkbymoorside Brass Band who will be providing some musical entertainment through out the afternoon.

Meadow Hall - Friends of Kirkbymoorside Primary School have arranged a shopping trip to Boundary Mill Designer Outlet and Meadow Hall on Saturday, June 8. Menzown - The group’s next meeting is on Monday, June 10, in the dining room of the King’s Head, 7pm for 7.30pm. Michael Bevington, from the National Trust, will talk about the gardens at Studley Royal, near Ripon. New members welcome. First visit is free.

Marie Curie - Kirkbymoorside Fundraising Group for Marie Curie invite you to join them to celebrate 20 years of fundraising. There will be an afternoon tea party to say a big thank you to all their loyal supporters. So join them on Saturday, June 22, from 2pm to 4pm, at the Moorside Club in Shaw Drive. Easy access and ample parking.

Ladies Fellowship - The next meeting is on Wednesday, June 12, at 7.30pm, in the library when members will be hearing about the life of a modern day butler. New members welcome.

Tuesday Group - The next meeting in the Methodist Church on Tuesday, June 11, will be the AGM. The leader for the evening is Daisy and members will be the tea hostesses.

Coffee morning - Coffee mornings take place in the Methodist Church each Tuesday, from 10am to noon.

Stall - Kirkbymoorside Golf Club Ladies’ Section is holding a cake stall on the town’s market day on Wednesday, June 12, at Towler’s Arch, by kind permission of the Towler family. Come along from 9am and buy a homemade cake.

KIRKDALE

St Gregory’s Minster - Until the end of August, St Gregory’s Minster will again provide volunteer guides in the church on most Saturday and Sunday afternoons to help visitors to appreciate the church and churchyard and its long history.

PICKERING

Church - First Holy Communion will be celebrated at St Joseph’s RC Church, Pickering, on Sunday, June 9. First Holy Communion gifts and cards are available at the repository stall.

Weekly draw - Pickering Town Football Club’s weekly draw for week commencing May 27 were 36, 3 and 32. There were no numbers therefore the pot will be £225 for the following week.

Free library workshops - Help eliminate plastic bags from our streets by joining in one or two workshops on Saturday, June 15, at Pickering Library, from 10.30am to 12.30pm, making recycled bags out of old curtains and bedsheets with the ladies from Morsbags. Any bags you make are yours to take. The workshops are free but you must pre-book your place in advance, either by calling in or

phoning the library on 01609 533624. On Saturday, June 22, come and celebrate National Day of Stitch, during the drop-in stitching session, from 10.30am to 1.30pm. The workshop is free for all ages and abilities, and no pre-booking is required. Materials are supplied for both events, or you can bring your own. (If you have any old curtains they can be recycled at the Morsbag workshops).

Bridge Club - In the latest session of duplicate bridge, the winners were Joan Taylor and Jean Wardman with 66.67 per cent. In second place with 57.14 per cent were Graeme Matthew and Anne Avery. In third place were Gill Hardcastle and Sue Pearson with 55.56 per cent.

RILLINGTON

Bingo - A prize bingo held in Woodlands Community Centre raised £400 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker Sue Nelson. The next prize bingo at the centre is for Dementia UK on Wednesday, June 26.

Quiz - Six teams playing for £42 took part in Jennie’s Mega Quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners with

56 points were Honeymooners + Mum, second were the Who + Mike and Col (53) and third were Team @ the Bar (52). The £10.50 jackpot was won by Team @ the Bar. Jennie’s next mega quiz

will be on Friday, June 14. The winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz were Honeymooners + Mike, Fiona and Col. The jackpot was a rollover.

Flowerpot festival - Rillington Flowerpot Festival, organised by the Friends of Rillington School, will take place on Saturday, from 10am to 4pm. The village will be decorated with sculptures of all shapes and sizes created from flowerpots. Maps for the Flowerpot Trail (20p) can be purchased from the church rooms where light refreshments will also be available.

RYEDALE

D-Day - The commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings in France on June 6 will be mainly in the South of England and in France. It is proposed to have a display in a local library to present information on several of the units which were vital to the Normandy campaign for the whole of June and onwards. All trained in Ryedale at some point between September 1939 and summer 1945, and their stories are told in a variety of private and published accounts, by servicemen and local people. SEAMER

St Martin’s Church - Rev Richard Firth presided and Deacon Judith Dean assisted and preached at the 9.30am service of BCP Holy Communion. Carol Beswick and Enid Plevey were welcomers, Jim Baird assisted with the distribution of communion, Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano and Clare Firth served refreshments. Reader Elizabeth Moreland led the 11am service of modern worship and also led intercessions. Richard Fuller led the powerful sung worship with Steve Raettig and John and Sue Grice, Andrea Raettig was the welcomer and Helen Swallow served refreshments after the service.

Treasure Hunt - Friends of Seamer village hold their annual treasure hunt this week. On Wednesday there is the children’s event where entry is free but the teams of four must be accompanied by a suitable adult. Then on Thursday in the village there is the adults quiz. All are invited to come along and there will be teams of four and the entrance fee is £5 per team. For both events meet at the village green between 6.30pm and 7pm. Bring a clipboard and come and join the fun as you find out facts about the village you either have missed or never knew existed.

Methodist Church Sunday service - The preacher at the service was the Rev Mary Jackman. The door steward was Margaret Harris and the vestry steward was Allan Dunnington. Doreen Lawson played the organ, and Margaret Neave took the collection, The Old Testament lesson from Exodus was read by Bert Blower, and Jean Cockerill read the New Testament lesson from Galatians. The prayers of Intercession before communion were prepared by the Methodist Church and will be used by all churches until Pentecost along with a book of daily prayers for each person to use at home. The preacher next Sunday will be Nikki Warner and the monthly coffee morning will be this Saturday, June 8.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s Church – The next service at St Hilda’s will be Morning Worship on Sunday, June

9 at 10.30am led by Barbara Grice.

Messy Church - This will be held on Saturday, June 8, at the Methodist Church when the theme will be, “the wind of the Spirit”. There will be all the usual activities, stories, songs and, of course, lots of messy craft. Please meet for tea at 4.45pm.

Next Steps coffee morning - Don’t sit at home alone. You are invited to join members at Sherburn Village Hall on Tuesdays, from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Pop in for a brew, cakes and a chat. Social activities provided too. Local free transport is available if needed.

Community Café - The cafe is open at the village hall each Thursday, from 9am to 11.30am. Come and enjoy tea or coffee and a lovely toasted teacake. There are play facilities for the children. All are welcome and proceeds are for village hall funds.

Cake bake sale - Skyla Botham and Izzy Hatch organised a cake bake sale for the Sea Life Centre. You could take along an old towel and swap your towel for a slice of cake to have with your coffee or, of course, you could give a donation. Business was brisk and 15 towels were soon piled up on the table. The girls had already done one of their sales at the cricket club and the combined donations for cake came to £100. These are two very enterprising young girls, their last project of litter picking in the village – not just once, but on a regular basis for some months, raised money for the children’s ward at Scarborough Hospital. Well done girls.

Methodist news - The Tuesday Coffee Morning was delighted to welcome Skyla and Izzy to the coffee morning and had come prepared with their towels to exchange for cake. The hostess was Pat Woodley. Your kind donations for coffee continue to be given for Water Aid in memory of Pam Wild. Craft Club continues to meet on Thursdays at 1.30pm. Just come along and bring your craft, there is no need to book. Sunday Worship was Holy Communion led by Rev Martin Calver assisted by Communion steward Kim Canterbury. The service next Sunday at 10.30am will be Pentecost Praise. Led by Christine Fenwick and Jean Brown, membmers will be celebrating the birth of the Christian Church. All are welcome to come along.

Senior Citizen Luncheon Club - This will be different from the usual pattern. Instead of being lunch in the Chapel Hall, it will be afternoon tea in the garden at Forge Villa, 31 St Hilda’s Street. SNAINTON

Marie Curie fundraiser - Pack your bags and board the Watery Queen for the cruise of somebody’s lifetime boarding at Stone Lodge, Croft Lane, Snainton, on Saturday, June 15, at 12.15pm, Ploughman’s Lunch and dessert served, at 12.30pm, followed by Passage To Murder, a new Murder Mystery performed by the Vale Players. Tickets are £15 and are strictly limited, sold on a first come, first served basis. There will be no admittance during the performance so book your deckchair now and enjoy an afternoon of intrigue on the ocean wave. Ticket holders are welcome to dress in “cocktail

Hunmanby Silver Band - In their 100th year, Hunmanby Silver has kindly agreed to play a concert in Snainton Village Hall in aid of St Stephen’s Church on Saturday, June 8, starting at 2pm, with an interval for a quick drink. The band will play a variety of pieces. Following the concert,they will be serving afternoon tea. Tickets are £10, which includes afternoon tea. If you would prefer something stronger, a glass fizz, tickets are £12.50. Tickets £6 for children under 11. Unfortunately due to seating

Open gardens - The annual Open Gardens will be held on Sunday, June 23. Maps will be available from noon from Snainton Village Hall. THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge Club - The results from May 20. North/South winners were Peter and Lesley Jaram with 63.8 per cent and in second place Margaret Lowe and Isa Eggleston 54.2 per cent. East/West winners were Conny Tate-Smith and Aileen Fisher with 62.5 per cent and in second place Eileen and Frank Hayward with 60.4 per cent.

Spin ride - Aptly named ‘May the 4th be with you’ Thornton-le-Dale’s third spin ride went ahead despite the very wet weather by moving the event from the village centre to inside the Hills Institute. Sixty riders covered a total of 492 miles. There was also a tombola, home-made cakes stall, dance and barbecue for more than 100 people at the Buck Inn where a raffle and auction was held. The day raised £4,005, which will be split between Thornton-le-Dale Village Hub and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Thornton-le-Dale Village hub are the main organisers of this event with support from local businesses. Roger Sharples, from the hub, thanks Dalby Bike Barn, Peter Nelson fitness centre, who supplied the bikes, thanks all the riders and their sponsors, everyone who helped, who donated cakes, raffle, auction or tombola prizes. Anniversary - The Methodist Church celebrated its 110th anniversary with a visit from Terrington Village Choir, who gave a wonderful evening of singing a variety of sacred music and songs interspersed with readings and poems,and a piano solo. This was followed by supper.

Service - Sunday Morning Service a welcome and introduction was given by Mary to the guest preacher Martin Lightfoot, from Knaresborough. Readings were given by Martin’s wife Sue and Barbara. The organist was Rosalind Laycock.

WESTOW

Open House - Volunteers are opening Westow Cricket Pavilion on Saturday, June 8, from 10am onwards and during the afternoon cricket match. On Sunday, June 9, from 10am to 1pm, serving tea, coffee, home baking, bacon rolls both days in aid of the cricket club and pavilion running costs. There will be second hand books by donation, as well as playing cards, dominoes and pool. Everyone welcome, including cyclists, walkers and dogs on leads.
