Sports and Gymkhana - The annual sports and gymkhana takes place on Saturday, June 1, from 9am. APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Village hall committee - Alarm trigger boxes have been replaced. There is a new light at the front of the hall and a sensor light on the back steps. The new oven is fitted - waiting for the dish washer. Waiting for tiling and decorating of the toilets. Arrangements to be made for main hall floor to be re-varnish. The management committee is going to paint the railings during the summer. Litter pickers are to be stored at the hall for general use around the parish and it was agreed that any litter collected could be deposited in the refuse bins. The next meeting is on August 7 at 2pm.

Bishop Hagg Wood - The latest Saturday morning work task as part of Appleton & Spaunton Community Interest Company’s management of Bishop Hagg Wood was attended by four villagers - pilling brash and collecting usable firewood done. Next Work Task will be June 29, at 10am.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - On Sunday, June 2, there will be a special combined Communion service for the congregations of all the Churches in the Benefice and also those in the Thornton Dale Benefice. It will take place at Wydale Hall, starting at 10am, and there will be coffee to follow. The Venerable David Garnett will take the service and the Rural Dean Tim Robinson will preach. This means that there will be no service at All Saints this Sunday but there will be an Ascension Day Service at Snainton at 7pm on Thursday, May 30.

May Market - Very many thanks to all the people who supported the May Market on Saturday, May 25, either by baking, making things or donating things to sell. This event is held annually and all the proceeds go to a charity chosen by local people. This year it went to the George Bairstow Charitable Trust which is the organisation that donated the defibrillator to the village. The sum of £260 will now find its way to them to further their aim of charitable funding in a range of other community projects. Thanks also to all the people who attended on the day and so willingly spent their money.

GILLAMOOR

Cream Tea Weekend - Everyone is welcome to the event on June 8 and 9 at The Chapel. There will be tea, coffee and delicious homemade cakes and scones, from 9.30am to 5.30pm. The beautiful front garden of Dial House, opposite the chapel, will be open to visitors for a donation of £2. All proceeds go to Gillamoor School and church funds.

Quiz - A family pub quiz will take place at the Crown Inn, on Sunday, June 2, at 8.30pm. Entry £2, including a sandwich supper. Prize is a voucher to spend at The Crown. Event in aid of St Chad’s Church.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Coffee morning - The monthly coffee morning at All Saints Church is on Saturday, June 1, from 9.30am. The club 100 draw takes place too.

Environment group - At the repair café, held at The Moorside Room, the items brought for repair included a standard lamp, a fan heater, a collapsible walking stick, a necklace, a water spinner, trousers to shorten, a quilt to alter and an intricate toy train. The next repair café will be on Saturday, July 20, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Please bring your broken items along. One of our volunteers offers 3D printing of replacement plastic components, up to 8” x 8”. The replacement part will be created with recycled plastic. Open Show - A meeting will take place on Monday, June 3, at 7pm, at Viv Webster’s home to arrange this year’s schedule of classes. Diary date - Kirkbymoorside support group for Marie Curie Cancer Care is celebrating 20 years of fundraising and to celebrate they are holding an afternoon tea party to say a thank you. It will take place on Saturday, June 22, from 2pm, at The Moorside Club in Shaw Drive.

Tuesday Group - The next meeting in the Methodist Church on Tuesday, June 11, will be the AGM. The leader for the evening is Daisy and members will be the tea hostesses.

Coffee morning - Coffee mornings take place in the Methodist Church each Tuesday from 10am to noon.

Ladies Fellowship - The next meeting is on Wednesday, June 12, at 7.30pm, in the library when members will be hearing about the life of a modern-day butler. New members welcome.

Show - The fourth Father’s Day Classic Vehicle Show will be held on Sunday, June 16, from 11am to 4pm, at the Moorside Bar and Club. Last year’s event attracted a wide selection of about 50 cars, lorries, tractors and motorcycles. There is no charge for anyone wishing to bring their vehicles for display. Anyone interested in bringing their vehicle, or if anyone would like a table for an auto jumble, please contact the organiser. Open gardens - Kirkbymoorside In bloom open gardens takes place on Sunday, June 9, from 11am to 5pm. Tickets and maps will be on sale on the day from our base on the corner of West End in the centre of the town. £5 for adults and under 16s free with a cream tea, included served from 1pm at the Quaker Meeting House in West End. This year organisers are delighted to welcome an ensemble from Kirkbymoorside Brass Band who will be providing some musical entertainment through out the afternoon.

Bridge Club - Ed Robinson and Dave Massey were the winners in the latest session, with Gladys Thompson and Richard Hilton in second place, Madge Allison and Stan Bough third and Charles and Hazel Ward fourth. The previous week there was a good win for Sheila Miller and Josie Halliwell with Philip Mason and Richard Hilton in second place then Tim Johnson and Audrey Shaw ahead of Keith Freeman and Mike Shawcross.

Village bash - The annual Nunnington Bash, in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, takes place on Saturday, June 22, from 5.30pm onwards, on the village cricket field. They have Don’t Tell Jane, Black Sheep Band and Midnight Junction. Food and drink, tombola, silent auction, BASC shooting simulator and so much more. Quiz - Six teams playing for £44 took part in Jennie’s Mega Quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners (after a tie-break were) on 57 points were Gary, Steve & Co, second were Mike, Fiona & Col (57) and third (after a tie-break with Team @ the Bar) were Sue’s Crew (50.5). The £11 jackpot was won by Gary, Steve & Co. The winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz (after a tie-break with Sue’s Crew) were Honeymooners + Mike & Col. The jackpot was won by Gary, Steve & Co. Jennie’s next Mega Quiz will be on Friday, May 31, at 9pm.

Race night - The Fleece Inn is hosting a race night in aid of the MS Society on Saturday, July 13 and is looking for local businesses willing to be race sponsors. Methodist Church - The service was taken by Rev Martin Calver. The organist was Doreen Lawson, vestry steward Bert Blower and the welcomer Margaret Harris. The offering was taken by Margaret Neave. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Rev Mary Jackman and Holy Communion will be observed.

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Andrew Moreland presided and preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion. Clare Firth and Frances Simons were the welcomers, Jean Donovan assisted with the distribution of communion, and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns the piano. Clare Firth also served refreshments. Rev Andrew presided and preached again at the 11am modern service of holy communion. Reader Elizabeth Moreland led the intercessions and Sue Grice read. Sue also played in the band for the sung worship, which was led by John Grice with Steve Raettig and John Taylor. Liz Cremer ran the young people’s Sunday Club with Elizabeth Bradley, who was also the welcomer, and Helen Swallow served refreshments after the service.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s Church – Rev Joe Kinsella officiated at the Holy Communion Service on Sunday assisted by Barbara Grice with the chalice. Martin Monkman was the organist and sidespersons were Betty Flinton and Barbara Grice with help from Rev Judy Duke and Sue Mennell. The lesson from Acts was read by Margaret Adams and coffee at the close of the service was served by Barbara Grice and helpers. Prayers were offered for a speedy recovery for Keith Usher after his recent operation. The next service at St Hilda’s will be Morning Worship on Sunday, June 9, at 10.30am, led by Barbara Grice.

Christian Aid Coffee Morning - Thanks to all who were so generous with both their giving and their helping at the coffee morning. £102 was raised from the coffee morning and to date £180 has been collected in the envelopes £50 of which was gift aided. So the current total stands at a magnificent £282. There is still time to hand in your envelope, just leave it at the chapel coffee morning. Competition winners were: Sweets in a jar - Pat Woodley, Name the Teddy – Christine Ashton and estimate the value of the grocery parcel – Kim Canterbury, who kindly donated the groceries to Westway Open Arms. Methodist News - The Bible Fellowship began a study of John’s Gospel. Sunday Worship was led by Christine Fenwick and Jean Brown assisted by the Worship Team. Chris Cade, the organist, led the time of Praise which was followed by Prayers of praise led by Sandra Cade. Offertory steward was Judith Ruston and prayers of Intercession by Jean Brown. After the grace, coffee was enjoyed in the hall. The Holy Communion Service next Sunday will be led by Rev Martin Calver.

SNAINTON

St Stephen’s Church - After two years of discussion with the National Lottery Heritage Fund, work has now started. The restoration work includes complete re-roofing, drainage improvements, eliminating dry rot in the vestry and provision of a toilet. Scaffolding is now in place and work will continue into August of this year. The whole project is made possible by money raised by National Lottery players – the grant is for £98,000 with the remainder being raised by the Parochial Church Council, including a successful application to the Garfield Weston Foundation (£10,000) and a variety of community fundraising events over recent years. The following two events are in aid of the roof project. Saturday, June 8 - Hunmanby Silver Band. In their 100th year, Hunmanby Silver has kindly agreed to play a concert in Snainton Village Hall in aid of St Stephen’s Church, starting at 2pm, with an interval for a quick drink. The band will play a variety of pieces. Following the concert, they will be serving afternoon tea. Tickets are £10 which includes afternoon tea. If you would prefer something stronger, a glass fizz, tickets are £12.50. Tickets £6 for children under 11. Open gardens - The annual event will be held on Sunday, June 23. Maps will be available from noon from Snainton Village Hall. There will be refreshments from noon to 4.30pm. Village display - Residents awoke to find its bus shelter decorated with bees and flowers - knitted, crocheted and sewn. The display celebrated World Bee Day, on May 20, and highlighted the importance of bees and other pollinators to humankind.

WESTOW

Garden fete - The Church of St Mary’s, Westow, is holding its annual garden fete on Sunday, June 16, from 2pm to 5pm, in Westow Hall by kind permission Danny and Susanna Beckett. Entry is free and cream teas will be available. There will be stalls, raffle and tombola. Proceeds will go to Friends of Malton Hospital and St the Church of Mary’s Church, Westow. WI MEETINGS

Appleton-le- Moors - WI members greatly enjoyed a talk by Jim Hall, from the Appleton History Society and North York Moors ranger, about the history of Appleton-le-Moors.Lots of wonderful old photos brought back lots of memories and illustrated the history of many of Appleton’s buildings. Next month will see members welcome Sirius Minerals to talk about local potash mining.Helmsley - The May meeting was very well attended - 22 members and four visitors. After the minutes and notices were read, members were entertained by the guest speaker, Cluny Chapman, a breeder of rare breed sheep and a talented textile artist. She talked the group through how she developed her flock, their care and shearing and how she puts their fleece to good use. From skeins of beautiful natural wool to various knitted items of traditional Shetland design to painted art, all with a sheep theme. The competition for a sheep-themed item was won by Cerise. Hazel was second and Anne third. The raffle was drawn and refreshments served by Bridget and Moira. Wombleton - June welcomed a total of 75 members and guests to an evening of musical entertainment by “Malarkey”. The evening was most enjoyable and relaxing as the singers delighted us with their varied programme of songs and music. At the June meeting, the group will welcome a guest speaker from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. As this is the chosen charity for all YCA groups, members are holding this as an open evening for anyone who would like to come along and hear all about the amazing work that the Yorkshire Air Ambulance do.
