Moveable Feast - The Acklam Moveable feast was a great success again due to much hard work and generosity. Thanks must go to all who contributed and supported the lovely event in many different ways. The event raised £1,150.

Acklam sports and Gymkhana - This traditional village show, over a century old, will take place on Saturday, June 1. The organisers are offering one lucky winner the chance to win a family ticket. All you have to do is like the Acklam Sports and Gymkhana Facebook page and share the recent post.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Tea party - A Mad Hatter’s Tea Party will be held on Saturday, June 1, at the Moors Inn, 2pm to 5.30pm. Everyone welcome. Dress up and join the madness. There will be games, quizzes, music, croquet and tea.

Bishop Hagg Wood - The latest Saturday work task as part of Appleton & Spaunton Community Interest Company’s management of Bishop Hagg Wood will be on May 25.

Singalong - The final Singalong of the 2018/19 season will be held in the Village Hall on Wednesday, June 19, from 5pm to 6pm. All welcome.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Defibrillator training - In the village hall last Saturday, members of the George Bairstow Charitable Trust (GBCT) team gave an informal presentation about the use of the defibrillator to an audience drawn from Brompton and neighbouring villages. Participants were each able to have a go with the defibrillator and to ask advice about its use. Brompton’s defibrillator was in fact donated to the village by the GBCT, which is marking its fifth anniversary this year of fundraising for the provision of similar equipment to local communities.

May Market - Brompton’s annual May Market will be held on Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday, May 25, in Brompton Village Hall, from 10am to 12.30pm. There will be a variety of stalls and entrance will be £1.50 to include refreshments. If you have something to sell, why not rent a table for £5. This year the chosen charity will be the George Bairstow Charitable Trust, which supplied our defibrillator and has in its five years of existence, raised £100,000 of grants for local communities all across the UK.

Church - The service next Sunday, May 26, will be at Langdale End, starting at 10.30am. It is Rogation Day when there is a tradition of blessing all parts of a parish. The walk will start at the church and finish with refreshments at the village hall nearby. This is a joint family service for all the churches of Snainton Brompton, Wykeham, Hutton Buscel and Langdale End.

Open Gardens - Brompton’s village Open Garden Day is on Sunday, June 16. Entry starts at the village hall which is in the square just to the south of the A170 (YO13 9DL). The gardens are open from noon to 5pm with sticker and map sales closing at 4pm. There will be light lunches available at the village hall, from noon and two, and cream teas at the West End of the village, from 2pm and 4pm.

BULMER

Bridge Club - The results of the Bulmer Bridge Club on Thursday, May 16, first Val and Michael Allen with 67.4 per cent and in joint second Robin Garbutt and Jane Bartlett and Brian Crowder and Sylvia Haines both pairs with 61.1 per cent.

FARNDALE

Village Hall – The new hall grand opening ceremony will take place at 2pm on Saturday, May 25. Activities throughout the afternoon, including a Broad Yorkshire talk by Adam Collier at 6.15pm, followed by local acapella group four quarters. Anyone with connections to Farndale welcome.

Domino Drive – There well be a domino drive at 7pm on Friday, June 7, in Farndale Village Hall, Church Houses, Farndale. Everyone welcome.

Dog walk - A dog walk held in memory of Maggie Wood and Jennie Rooke raised over £2,500 for Yorkshire Cancer Research. Many thanks to everyone who supported this event, gave raffle prizes or helped in any way.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - A family pub quiz will take place at the Crown Inn, on Sunday, June 2, at 8.30pm. Entry £2, including a sandwich supper. Prize is a voucher to spend at The Crown, in aid of St Chad’s Church, Hutton-le-Hole.

KIRBY MISPERTON

Concert - The Dalesmen Singers Male Voice Choir from Danby performed at a well supported concert at Kirby Misperton Village Hall on Saturday, May 11. The choir, with a lively repertoire, entertained with a full evening of music and song, the enthusiastic audience enjoying joining in to many of the well known songs. Harry Collett and Harold Jones were the soloists on the night. Judith Bramhall introduced the choir and thanked them for their performance at the finale and vice-chairman for the choir, Lindsay Barber, gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the Dalesmen, before everyone enjoyed the supper provided. KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Bridge Club - The result from Tuesday, May 14. North/South winners were Sue Pearson and Steve Lonsdale with 62.8 per cent. In second place Judith O’Donnell and David Whitehead with 55 per cent. East/West winners were Trevor and Gill Hardcastle with 61.1 per cent. In second place Graeme Matthew and Mary Mortonson with 54.1 per cent.

Tuesday Group - The next meeting in the Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 28, will have an evening with local artist Maggie Roberts. The leader for the evening is Sonja and tea hostesses Linda and Pat. Tuesday Group is open to all and aims to provide a meeting place where Christian responsibility at home, in the community and in church life is encouraged.

Coffee morning - The coffee mornings in the Methodist Church each Tuesday, from 10am to noon. Join them for coffee company and a chat.

Ladies Fellowship - The next meeting is on Wednesday, June 12, at 7.30pm, in the Library when they will be hearing about the life of a modern-day butler. New members welcome.

Brass band - The first concert is on Sunday, June 2, at 6.30pm, in the KMS Memorial Hall and it will feature the Senior Band, Training Band and Community Band. Tickets £5 available from JRA Computer Services on 01751 432142 or band members.

Cake stall - Kirkbymoorside support for Marie Curie Cancer Care is holding a cake and produce stall on the town’s market day on Wednesday, May 29, at Towlers Arch, by kind permission of the Towler family. Come along from 8.30am and buy a homemade cake for tea. A date for your diary is the group’s 20 years of fundraising and to celebrate it is holding an afternoon tea party to say a big thank you to its loyal supporters. It takes place on Saturday, June 22, from 2pm, at The Moorside Club in Shaw Drive.

Open Show - A meeting on Monday, June 3, at 7pm, at Viv Webster’s home to arrange this year’s schedule of classes. This year’s show held in the town’s memorial hall is on Saturday, September 28. From May until the end of August, St Gregory’s Minster, Kirkdale, will again provide volunteer guides in the church on most Saturday and Sunday afternoons to help visitors to appreciate the church and churchyard and its long history.

MALTON

Church - Fifteen young people celebrated their first Holy Communion at St Leonard and St Mary’s RC Church, Malton, on Sunday.

Raffle - There is still one unclaimed prize bottle of Whisky ticket No 107 White in the Teenage Cancer Trust raffle. If the winner would get in touch it will be arranged to get it to the person.

OLD MALTON

Ladies Fellowship - The May meeting of St Mary’s Priory Old Malton Ladies Fellowship has taken place. It was the AGM and election of officers for the following year. The new chairman is Sue Galley and members wish her well. The secretary remains the same, Jacqui Gempton and the treasurer remains as before Ann Shipley. They are grateful to Ann and Jacqui for continuing these roles for another year. Retiring chairman Helen Morgan gave her report, as did secretary Jacqui of events and speakers of the previous year. The financial statement was read by the treasurer. Members then discussed ideas for speakers and events for the following year. After coffee, members continued with the regular meeting discussing the fete in June and summer outing. The raffle prize was kindly donated by Margaret Teasdale and won by Ann Shipley. The competition for as many items as possible in a match box was won by Rita Hyams. The next meeting will be on June 6 and the summer fete will be on June 29 at the rugby club. They resume the monthly meetings again in September.

OSWALDKIRK

Talk - There will be a talk on Saturday, at 7pm, at the village hall, entitled “From Russia with Love”. Stories, songs, and food from Dr Catherine Reid’s time in Russia. £7.50pp.

Probus Club - The Vale of Pickering Probus Club met on Tuesday, May 14, for lunch at the Forest & Vale Hotel, under the chairmanship of Colin Ruston. Consultant geologist Peter Woods spoke about The Salty History of North East Yorkshire, a well received account of the economic importance and challenges of developing the world’s largest and highest grade polyhalite deposit at Boulby, and currently by Sirius at the Woodsmith Mine near Whitby. Family Cinema - The next Family Cinema will be on Saturday, June 1, at 6.30pm, in the Whistler Hall of the Pickering Memorial Hall because the redevelopment work continues on the Methodist Church premises. Admission to the cinema is free, donations towards costs are welcome. Doors open at 6pm and the film, Ferdinand, starts at 6.30pm. The tuck shop will be open and there will be tea or coffee during the interval. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. All families welcome. Quiz - Seven teams playing for £52 took part in Jennie’s Mega Quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners with 54.5 points were Team @ the Bar, second were Honeymooners (54) and third The Who (51.5). The £13 jackpot was won by Gary, Steve and Co. Honeymooners + Mike and Col were the winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz. The jackpot was a rollover.

Bingo - A prize bingo in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance will be held in Woodlands Community Centre on Wednesday, May 29. Doors open 6.45pm, eyes down 7.15pm.

SCARBOROUGH

Service - Saint Catherine’s is holding its annual Service of Remembrance on Sunday, June 2, 3pm, at St Mary’s Church, Castle Road, Scarborough – and everyone is welcome to attend. The service is a chance to remember loved ones and celebrate their lives. People are invited to bring a photo of their loved one, which will form part of a display during the service. There will also be chance to fill in a remembrance card and light a candle in a loved one’s memory. The service will be followed by refreshments and the opportunity to chat to representatives from Saint Catherine’s. Everyone is very welcome to attend. St Martin’s Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided and Parish Reader Elizabeth Moreland assisted and preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion. Kate Middleton led the Kid’s Club and the children made painted rocks to remind everyone of the love that God has for everyone. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, Sue Johnson and Dot Francis were sidespersons and Clare Firth served refreshments. Elizabeth Moreland preached again at the 11am service of modern worship, which she also led. Liz Cremer read and Steve Raettig led the sung worship with Richard Fuller, John and Sue Grice and John Taylor. Liz was also the welcomer and Helen Swallow served refreshment after the service.

Methodist Church - The preacher at the service was the Rev Mary Jackman, the vestry steward was Allan Dunnington and the door steward was Margaret Neave, who also took the offering. The organist was Doreen Lawson. As May 24 is known as Wesley Day, the service concentrated on the amazing work of the two brothers John and Charles Wesley. They sang several of the many hymns they had written, and Mary led them into the Sacrament assisted by Bob, by reading one of their hymns as a prayer. The Old Testament reading was read by Denise Earnshaw and Margaret Neave read the lesson from St Marks Gospel. Refreshments were served after the service. The preacher next week at 10.30am will be the Rev Martin Calver.

SHERBURN

Community and sports club - The cricket fundraising match held at the sportsfield on Sunday, May 5, was a huge success raising £500. A big thank you to all those who played and to everyone who came along to support the day. The funds will be used towards the purchase of a bench in memory of Colin Hotham, which will be placed in the field. The next quiz night is Sunday, May 26. Live music by feedback on Saturday, June 1. Senior Citizen Luncheon club - After a lovely lunch birthday greetings were sung to Jean, John, Janet and we all got a piece of birthday cake to enjoy at home, very kindly made for by Judith. The speaker was Nicky from St Catherine’s Hospice who spoke very interestingly about the wonderful work there. Thank you so much for coming and telling us about all it. Next month members meet on Wednesday, June 19 at Forge Villa, St Hilda’s Street, where they have been invited to, “afternoon tea in the garden”. Please meet from 2.30pm for tea at 3pm. St Hilda’s Church - The next service at St Hilda’s will be on Sunday, May 26, at 9am, when Holy Communion will be celebrated.

Methodist News - The Tuesday Coffee Morning hostess was Judith Ruston. Next Tuesday, May 28, there will be a special cake bake sale stall organised by Izzy Hatch and Skyla Botham two members of the Sherburn Brownies. They are fundraising for an ecological project. Bring along an old towel and swap it for a slice of cake. Thursday is craft club afternoon at 1.30pm. Sunday worship was led by the worship team. Chris led the time of praise. Sandra told a story about wise and foolish builders. India and Kiara helped Christine explain the difference being knowledge and wisdom. Sandra led the prayers of Intercession with the penny prayer. Coffee was enjoyed in the hall afterwards. The service next Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Christine Fenwick and Jean Brown and all are invited.

Anniversary - Thornton-le-Dale Methodist Church will celebrate its anniversary of 110 years with a musical evening given by Terrington Village Choir on Friday, May 31, at 7pm. Supper will follow and a collection will be taken for church funds. All welcome.

WESTOW

Open house - Volunteers are continuing to open Westow Cricket Club Pavilion on Saturday and Sundays, from 10am to 1pm, serving tea, coffee, bacon rolls, home baking. Raising money for the cricket club and pavilion. The TV will be on, there is a pool table, dominoes and cards, together with second hand books available by donation (new books are donated weekly). Footballs are available for those children wanting to have a kick around outside. Everyone is welcome, including walkers, cyclists and dogs on leads.

Summer Fair - Westow Cricket Club annual summer fair is on Sunday, June 23, from 10.30am to 1pm, raising money for the cricket club. There are a number of stalls, both inside and outside, with refreshments of tea, coffee, bacon rolls and home baking being sold by cricket club members and supporters. Anyone wishing to have a stall (£5 payable in advance) should phone Julie Price on 01653 618214. The cricket ground has plenty of parking and the is easily accessible, with good facilities.
