Grants - Amotherby Educational Foundation is a charity which provides benefits to Amotherby Primary School. It also gives financial assistance to anyone under the age of 25 who is resident in the parishes of Appleton-le-Street, Easthorpe, Amotherby, Swinton and Broughton towards their education or to prepare them for entry into a trade or profession. APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Coffee morning - The annual coffee morning held in the village hall on Bank Holiday Monday raised just over £600 to be divided equally between the chapel and the church. There were many stalls and a spinning demonstration was given by Clare Haynes. A huge prize draw took place first prize was won by Penny Ward. Grateful thanks to all who gave so generously. As usual a big thank you to the Master of Ceremonies Malcolm Leckenby.

BROMPTON

Local History Society - The last meeting took place on May 1 and was an excursion to Rievaulx led by Trevor Pearson. The society was both informed by and enjoyed the excursion. Next year’s programme is being put together starting in September with help from the North Riding County Record Office on tracing the history of houses and ending in April 2020 with an update on the excavations on Castle Hill.

Community Lunch - The lunch this month will on the fourth Wednesday in the month, May 22, and not the third one. Doors open as at 12.15pm.

Defibrillator training - Come and join in an informal session familiarising yourself with the use of the defibrillator, given by members of the George Bairstow team on Saturday, May 18, at 2.30pm, in Brompton Village Hall. May Market - Brompton’s annual May Market will be held on Saturday, May 25, in village hall, from 10am to 12.30pm. This year the chosen charity will be the George Bairstow Charitable Trust.

Church - The service on Sunday, May 19, at All Saints will be Holy Communion at 9.30am. It will be taken by Rev Tony Lear and there will be coffee afterwards.

Bridge Club - The results of the meeting of the Bulmer Bridge Club on Thursday, May 9 were: 1st: Michael Allen and Brian Crowder, 60.4 per cent; 2nd: Judith Bray & Derek Searle, 58.8 per cent.

Raffle - The RNLI prize raffle night held on April 27, in the Scout Hut, Helmsley, raised £304.50. Thank you everyone who supported them.

HOVINGHAM

Talk - On Thursday, May 9, more than 40 people enjoyed an evening of escapism as they followed a young lady’s journey across Latin America in the 1970s. Barbara Hickman peppered her Travels with My Red Bag stories with wit and humour and brought with her, the trusty red bag that accompanied her on her seven-month journey. The Worsley Arms hosted the evening raising funds for community group, Frack Free Ryedale.

Service - On Sunday, May 19, the Methodist Minister, Rev Tanya Short will take her last service at the village chapel, at 10.30am. They invite anyone to join them at this special service. Hovingham Women’s Fellowship invited one of Ryedale District Council’s local community officer’s to this month’s meeting.

HUTTON BUSCEL

Beer festival - The village hall committee is staging another beer festival on Saturday, June 1, following the success of last year’s first event. Brews from several micro-breweries will be featured say the organisers. Plans are under way to have a Christmas card competition, and residents are encouraged to put forward suggested designs in whatever form they wish.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Brass Band - The first concert that we have is on Sunday, June 2, at 6.30pm, in the KMS Memorial Hall and it will feature the Senior Band, Training Band and Community Band. Tickets £5 available from JRA Computer Services on 01751 432142 or any band member.

Tuesday Group - The next meeting in the Methodist Church is on Tuesday, May 28, and will be an evening with local artist Maggie Roberts. The leader for the evening is Sonja and the tea hostesses Linda and Pat.

Coffee morning - The coffee mornings in the Methodist Church each Tuesday, from 10am to noon. Join them for coffee company and a chat.

Environment group - The next Repair Café will be held on Saturday, May 18, from 9.30am to 12.30pm, in The Moorside Room, Church Street, Kirkbymoorside. Messy Church - The group meets on Monday, May 20, the Methodist School Room, from 4pm to 6pm. Accompanied children welcome. Activities informal worship followed by a meal.

Cake stall - Kirkbymoorside Support for Marie Curie Cancer Care is holding a cake and produce stall on the town’s market day on Wednesday, May 29, at Towlers Arch, by kind permission, of the Towler family. Come along from 8.30am and buy a homemade cake for tea. A date for your diary is the group’s 20 years of fundraising and to celebrate is holding an afternoon tea party to say a big thank you to their loyal supporters. Come along on Saturday, June 22, from 2pm, at The Moorside club in Shaw Drive.

Bridge Club - The result from Tuesday, May 7. There were joint winners North/South. George Goodall with Tony Ward and Barry Smith with Bob Wardell each scoring 54.5 per cent. East/West winners were Sue Pearson and Steve Lonsdale with 55 per cent. In second place Ann Scott and Chris Brett with 52 per cent.

Film - On Saturday, May 18, there will be a showing of the film “Unfractured” at Kirkbymoorside Methodist Hall, at 7pm. Entry is free. This is the story of Sandra Steingraber, a biologist and mother who reinvented herself as an outspoken activist. She became one of the main forces in the successful banning of fracking in New York. The film will be shown and introduced by the producer and director Chanda Chevannes. She will hold a question and answer question after the showing.

Brass band - Yorkshire Tunes & Tales takes place on Sunday, May 19, at 7.30pm, at Kirkbymoorside Memorial Hall. Join them for an evening celebrating Yorkshire, with Yorkshire’s own Adam Collier and Kirkbymoorside Town Brass Band. Ladies Fellowship - The May meeting was held on a wet, cold evening but there was still a very good turnout. Chrissie Wright read a very thoughtful prayer about the journey through life which led in very neatly to the talk from Laura Ricketts about how she cycled home from China. Just one birthday girl this month, Vera Cassie. Kath Evans was the tea hostess with other helping hands. Dorothy Masterman thanked all those who had sponsored her knitting for St Catherine’s Hospice enabling her to raise £200 for the charity. On display were some of hats, mittens and scarves members have made for the Shoe Box Appeal but there is still plenty of time to make more if you would like to have a go. The next meeting is on Wednesday, June 12, at 7.30pm, in the library when we will be hearing about the life of a modern-day butler. New members welcome.

Church - There will be a retiring collection at St Leonard & St Mary’s RC Church, Malton, for the Priests Training Fund and a Pastoral Letter from Bishop Terry to mark Vocations Sunday on Sunday.

Support for the Teenage Cancer Trust - Thanks to all parishioners of St Leonard’s and St Joseph at Pickering for their support and generosity. The final total raised has increased to £250.

Bridge club - The first of Malton Bridge Club’s handicapped summer sessions took place on Wednesday, with several players from the now-ended Thursday afternoon group in attendance. There was a big win for Tricia Pearce and Madeleine Webber with Keith Freeman and Mike Shawcross in second place. Tim Johnson and Audrey Shaw came third, followed by Josie Halliwell and Charlie Callis.

Flower club - Malton and District Flower Club will meet in the Memorial Hall, Old Malton, on Tuesday, May 21, at 2pm, for a demonstration by Roma Berridge “How Does Your Garden Grow”. Admission to non-members £5.

Meeting - The monthly meeting of Ryedale Parkinson’s Support Group held in Trinity Methodist Church was again very well supported. A presentation on “Yoga for Parkinson’s” was given by Nadja followed by a fascinating talk by John Edwards on the conservation of merlins on the North York Moors. Weekly draw - The numbers for Pickering Town Football Club’s Weekly Draw for week commencing May 6 were 10, 14 and 23 and there was no winner for the big money, but did share the monthly pot and they were Ethel Allanson, Nancy Bradley, Derek Firth, A Hissey, and Eileen Taylor. Next week the pot will be £600.

Dementia week - Dementia Action Week is from May 20 to 26, and Dementia Friends (an Alzheimer’s Society Initiative) is holding a free interactive information session at Pickering Library on Thursday, May 23, at 5.30pm. Learn how dementia affects a person and what you can do to make a difference. Become a dementia friend and join more than two million others taking action. From being more patient in the shop queue to campaigning for change, every action counts. Anyone of any age can become a dementia friend. You don’t need to book your place in advance, just call into the library to join in. For more information on Dementia Friends visit their website at dementiafriends.org.uk.

RILLINGTON

Action - Nine residents took part in the recent Love Where You Live Action event collecting 22 sacks of rubbish, plus old tyres and wood. The parish council sincerely thanks those who took part.

Festival - The Friends of Rillington School are organising Rillington Flowerpot Festival on Saturday, June 8. They hope to decorate the village with sculptures of all shapes and sizes created from flowerpots. They would love it if people from the local community participated and were willing to create a sculpture to display in the village. Organisers will have a pop-up café in the church rooms on the Saturday and to collect a map of the trail.

Quiz - Jennie will be hosting a mega quiz in the Fleece Inn on Friday at 9pm. Entry £2 includes cash prizes to third place, cash jackpot and hot supper. After a tie-break with Mike and Col, Steve Gary & Co were the winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz. The jackpot was a rollover. Live music from brilliant guitarist Carl Robinson at the Fleece Inn on Saturday from 9pm.

SEAMER

Methodist Church - The service was taken by Janette Biltcliffe. The vestry steward was Allan Dunnington and the welcomer was Margaret Neave. Joan Roue accompanied on the piano. Bible readings were given by Allan Dunnington and Sheena Dunnington. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Rev Mary Jackman.

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Andrew Moreland presided and preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion. Churchwarden Jean Donovan led the prayers and assisted with the distribution of communion. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, Jim and Marion Baird were the welcomers, and Sue Johnson and Enid Plevey served refreshments. Rev Moreland preached again at the 11am service of modern worship, which he also led. Tim Cremer led the intercessions and Helen Swallow read. John Grice led the sung worship with Sue Grice and John Taylor. Jo Taylor was the welcomer and Elizabeth Bradley served refreshments after the service.

Church bells - Following the peal of bells at Remembrance last year, there has been a request that the bells of St Martin’s are brought into use again for certain services. A new team of ringers is to be formed and if anyone is interested then you are invited to visit St Martin’s any Sunday or Saturday, from 10am to noon, or Wednesday, from 1.30pm and 3pm, and add your name to the list at the back of the church together with your contact details. It is hoped to have an introductory session at a date to be arranged in June.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s Church - Sunday Morning Worship was led by Barbara Grice. Bill Hyndford supplied the music on the keyboard and the lesson from Acts 9; 36-43 was read by Carol Stephenson. Sidespersons were Christine Ashton and Sue Mennell and coffee was served at the end of the service by Carol Stephenson. Members were given Christian Aid envelopes and asked to return these to the coffee morning at the Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 21, when there will also be a cake stall – any donations of cakes will be greatly appreciated. The next service at St Hilda’s will be on Sunday, May 26, at 9am.

Open Garden - Jackson’s Wold Gardens were open to the public in aid of National Gardens on Sunday, and the ladies from St Hilda’s Church served the teas, from which all proceeds, amounting to £708 were very kindly donated to the church by Mr and Mrs Richard Cundall. The ladies helping were Christine Ashton, Pam Foxton, Carol Stephenson, Pauline Dobson, Betty Flinton and Barbara Grice. The Parochial Church Council is very grateful to Mr and Mrs Cundall for their generosity.

Messy Church - After a lovely sausage and chips tea (thanks to RJ’s for the chips) members went into chapel and India and Kiara shared a video song they had learned at spring harvest. Sandra told one of her special stories. The next Messy Church will be on Saturday, June 8, when they will hear about the wind of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Meet for tea at 4.45pm.

Methodist News - The Tuesday coffee morning hostess was Pat Woodley and your kind donations for coffee are currently being given to Water Aid in memory of Pamela Wild who worked so hard for this charity. Thursday Craft Club meets at 1.30pm. Sunday worship was led by Rev Martin Calver who will be acting as our Minister during Rev Kevin’s sabbatical. Kim Canterbury read to from the book of Corinthians and Janet from the gospel of John. Hollie made a sea picture with as many fish as she could do in the time and even though she worked very hard and made 54 fish she couldn’t manage the 153 in the bible story. After the service we all enjoyed coffee and cake in the hall. The service next Sunday at 10.30am will be led by the Worship Team.

Christian Aid coffee morning - This will be held on Tuesday, May 21, in the Methodist Chapel Hall, from 10am to 11.30am.

Jumblies - Sheriff Hutton Jumblies will be holding their next jumble sale on Saturday, May 18, at 2pm, in the village hall, to raise money for Riding for the Disabled.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Ladies Group - Members were entertained by Maureen Mercer, who gave a rendition of light-hearted songs and poems. A social half-hour followed. The annual Ladies Group Service will be held at the Methodist Chapel on Sunday, May 19, at 10.30am. ‘How to use a defibrillator’ is the topic for the next meeting on June 6, at 2pm.

WESTOW

Open house - Westow Cricket Pavilion will be opening again on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19, from 10am to 1pm. Volunteers are raising money towards the cricket club and pavilion running cost by serving drinks and snacks. The TV will be on, there is a pool table, cards and dominoes. There will also be second-hand books available by donation.

Workshop - There is to be a free RLSS ‘Save a baby’s life’ workshop in Westow Cricket Club pavilion on Wednesday, June 5, from 10am to noon. YCA MEETING

Rillington - Sixteen members were present at the May meeting of the Rillington & District Branch of the YCA held in the village hall. The evening’s speaker Christine Pietrowski’s talk and slide presentation was “Black Cats and Cracked Mirrors”. A history of superstitions, with much audience participation and laughter. The vote of thanks was given by Elizabeth Saint. Christine judged the competition for a photograph of a cat and awarded first place to Valerie Gilbert, second was Barbara Grice and third Sue Butler. Tracey Ireland has agreed to continue as speakers’ secretary and would appreciate suggestions for speakers from members. The evenings hostesses were Tracey Ireland and Louise Tindall. Marjorie Grice sold tickets for the raffle which was won by Sue Mennell. The speaker at the June meeting will be Joan Lawrence who will talk about the disappearance of her daughter Claudia.
