CAESAR Must Die! will be shown at City Screen, York, as part of the 2019 York International Shakespeare Festival on Monday (May 13) at 8.30pm.
Directed by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, this innovative drama is built around real-life prison inmates rehearsing and performing a Shakespearean tragedy.
Each year, the inmates of Rome's high-security Rebibbia prison, incarcerated mostly for Mafia-related crimes, put on a play. Here, the Taviani brothers follow the rehearsals of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, a play where the conspiracies and betrayals echo the past and present lives of the prisoners.
The "actors" become prisoners once again as they are accompanied back to their cells. As one of the prisoner-turned-actors remarks towards the end, "Since I discovered art, this cell has become a prison."
City Screen's marketing manager, Dave Taylor, says: "We're pleased to be working with York International Shakespeare Festival once again and to present this fascinating film. As the screening takes place on a Monday, tickets are just £7.70 or £5.70 for members."
