I DO not know about England but Archibald was a popular name among the senior Scottish medieval aristocracy.

We had ‘the Good’ , ‘the Bad’, ‘the Black’ and ‘Bell the Cat’ - and one actually married Henry the Eighth’s sister Margaret Tudor, so there might be a tenuous connection with the late Queen Mother.

They were proud men so I don’t suppose that anyone calling them Archie would have lasted very long.
