A MAJOR fire in open land on Sunday is believed to have been started deliberately.

Crews from Huntington, Acomb, York, Malton, Thirsk, Tadcaster, Kirkbymoorside, Selby and Easingwold all attended the huge grass fire on Strensall Common.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the length of the fire was 500 metres.

It was called to the incident at 2.40pm.

The last crew left the scene at about 7.30pm.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: “This is thought to have been deliberate.
