YOU only have to look at the stretch of the River Ouse between Ouse and Skeldergate bridges to understand exactly why our river is such a danger to those who, for whatever reason, end up in its waters.

From Clifton right through to Fulford, the banks of the river are built up to provide tow paths and walkways, making it very easy to enter the river but, with the exception of the few landing areas, very difficult to get out.

An increase in the number of rescue boats will help but unless there can be some way of giving support to swimmers trapped in the water then the rescue element will remain low.

To adopt some form of flotation along the built-up sections that would allow a swimmer to hang on until help arrived would save some.

It would not cost a lot and a trial along the section between the Ouse and Skeldergate bridges would be worth considering.
