The growing number of deaths in York’s rivers is unacceptable. Too many families are grieving the loss of loved ones, and the deaths are avoidable. It is time now for City of York Council, North Yorkshire Police and local pubs to work closely together to find a way to address the problem.

Community Police officers could be used. There should be a river patrol and people on the side of the river, between 10pm and 3am every night. Volunteers can be found to assist. Sponsorship could come from local businesses.

We cannot allow this to continue. It’s a blight on York’s (otherwise excellent) reputation. We are recognised as a great city, both domestically and internationally. I do not want to read about any more heartbroken families. This cannot continue - we can address this with concerted effort.
