I am grateful to AV Martin for declaring the UK should become like Switzerland to solve potential border issues with the EU (Irish Border not a problem, Letters, April 22).

Switzerland is a member of the European Free Trade Area.

Every nation in the EFTA is signed up to the EEA Agreement, meaning that they accept all EU laws relating to the single market.

These laws cover the four freedoms, ie: the free movement of goods, services, persons and capital, as well as competition and state aid rules.

The EEA Agreement also guarantees the same equal rights and obligations that exist within the single market for citizens and businesses in the EEA.

Alongside 100 bilateral agreements between Switzerland and the EU, Switzerland pays a financial contribution to the economic and social cohesion in the new EU member states.

That’s why trade and border controls between Switzerland and the EU are so straightforward; nothing to do with imaginary technology.

I assume AV Martin knows all this and that he is discreetly urging us all to remain in the single market. Otherwise we would have to conclude that this is another example of Brexiters not knowing what they are talking about.

Brexiters want their cake and eat it too

A number of Brexiteers seem not to understand Switzerland’s relationship with the EU. They hold it up as a model for the UK, yet they reject various items that are in the Swiss agreement with the EU, e.g. effective free movement of people, the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice etc. It seems many Brexiteers still have a ‘wanting their cake and eating it too’ mentality. Which is never going to happen.
