LEAVENING Primary School and Nursery has become a registered centre for the Arts Award.

The award allows children aged three to 11 to learn more about the arts industry and gain qualifications along the way.

Head teacher Sian Mitchell said: “The school is proud of their commitment to the arts for many years with award-winning art exhibitions, student-led productions, meet and share experiences with local artists and annual choir visits to Sheffield Arena.

“I am delighted the efforts of the staff and students in promoting the arts in the primary curriculum can now be formally recognised.”

Mrs Mitchell added: “Throughout my career I have always held a passion for the arts in the curriculum.

“I believe that the right balance of this with high expectations across the curriculum can really enable all children to flourish, regardless of their talent and ability.

“It is ever more important with the connection to arts and outdoor learning having a positive impact on children’s emotional well-being and mental health; in both areas we do very well.”

Arts Award’s unique qualifications support young people to develop as artists and arts leaders.

The programme develops their creativity, leadership and communication skills. Open to anyone aged up to 25, Arts Award embraces all interests and backgrounds.

Vanessa Simmons, the school’s Arts Award adviser, said: “I am excited to meet the children and start the Arts Award: Discover programme.

“We are now looking for local artists and arts organisations to set up partnerships with us for the next term.”
