THE traditional Good Friday service is to go ahead in Helmsley this week.

Members of Helmsley clergy had expressed their concern that there had been little consultation in a decision to move the town’s Maundy Thursday market to Good Friday.

Rev Tim Robinson, Vicar of Helmsley and Upper Ryedale, said: “Good Friday is the most solemn day in the Christian year.

“I am very grateful to Ryedale District Council that they have worked gladly and in some detail with us to ensure that the traditional Good Friday service can take place alongside the market which will now take place this coming Friday.

“Ryedale District Council officers have been committed to be fair and generous to all those concerned, including the churches in Helmsley and market traders.”

Rev Robinson added: “Thanks to those market traders who have moved their stalls so that the service can take place.

“All are welcome to this short service which begins in Helmsley Market Square at 11am.”
