Tea, Chat & History - The final Tea, Chat & History for 2018/19 was held in the village hall on Monday. It was well attended by more than 30 people, including a number of visitors from outside the village. As usual thanks to Shirley Brooke for all her work in the catering department. Tea & Chat will restart on September 2, 2019.

AYTON

Craft fair - Ayton Village Hall is holding its annual Easter craft fair on Easter Monday, April 22, from 10am to 3pm. Refreshments will be available all day. Come and browse the many different crafts and find that unusual gift or simply treat yourself. BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Whitby or Bust - Brompton-by-Sawdon Radio Players performed their latest comedy in the village hall on Friday and Saturday with every seat taken. Written and directed, as always, by the resident author, sound man, and backdrop painter Marcel Guillou and performed by amateur actors from within the locality, aided and abetted by local residents providing lighting, supper, bar and raffle, it was a great success. The cast consisted of Anne Pilgrim Green, Bob Muir, Simon Johnston, Charlie Shaw, Liz Pryor, Pam Shaw Johnston, Ron Carey, Charles Hill, Demelza Robinson and Alex Scott. Money raised from the evenings will go to village hall funds.

Village Ventures - The next Village Ventures lunch takes place on Wednesday, April 17, with the village hall doors opening at 12.15pm.

Parish Council - The next parish council meeting for Brompton and Sawdon takes place on Monday, April 15, at Brompton Village Hall, at 7.45pm. The meetings are open to all village residents who may speak during the “Open Forum” part.

Church - The AGM of All Saints took place on Sunday, April 7. There are now 46 people on the church electoral role, an increase, and the churchwardens Mark Evans and Don Jones and the PCC were re-elected. Next Sunday, April 14, is Palm Sunday so there will be a Benefice Service, this time at Hutton Buscel. It starts at 10am with the Liturgy of the Palms and Procession, followed at 10.30am by Holy Eucharist with a dramatic reading of the Passion. There will not be a service in Brompton, but there will be on the following Tuesday, April 16, at 7pm.

GILLING EAST

HOVINGHAM

Village market - The market was held last Saturday with a great turnout of visitors. Butterflies Chocolates had a roaring trade with their handmade Easter Eggs filled with tiny eggs and Brenda Scott performers were selling tickets for their concert on April 13 at Hovingham Village Hall in aid of Ryedale Special Families. Hovingham Cricket Club had a busy cafe. The next market will be on Saturday, May 4.

Litter pick - Hovingham’s annual litter pick will take place on Saturday, April 13. Meet at the Worsley Arms where rubbish sacks, gloves, safety vests and litter picking devices will be provided. Last year 60 sacks of rubbish were collected which included old bags, tyres, bottles and cans. At the end of the litter pick Sally and Tony, of the Worsley Arms Hotel, will be providing complimentary coffee and cakes for all volunteers. Email action@hovingham.org.uk for more details.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Bridge Club - The result from Tuesday, April 2: North/South winner were Anne Avery and George Goodall with 73.5 per cent. In second place were Steve Lonsdale and Sue Pearson with 58.3 per cent. East/West winners were Trevor and Gill Hardcastle with 56.6 per cent. In second place were Graeme Matthew and Mary Mortonson with 55.8 per cent.

Cafe - Kirkbymoorside Community Cafe is reopening under new management on April 10 and thereafter every Wednesday from 7.30am. This market cafe will offer old and new customers a very warm welcome and lovely food. The motivation for reopening the cafe is to support the community and the Wednesday market.

Messy Church - The group meets on Monday, April 15, in the Methodist church, from 4pm to 6pm.

Tuesday Group - The next meeting on Tuesday, April 23, is entitled Knitting Bee. The leader is Gwen and the tea hostesses are Audrey and Rosie. The meeting is held at the Methodist church Jubilee room at 7.30pm.

Oasis - Join them for coffee company and chat each Tuesday, from 10am to noon, at the Methodist Church.

Coffee morning - The annual coffee morning for Shoebox Appeal takes place on Wednesday, April 17, from 9.30am to 11.30am, at Kirkbymoorside Methodist Church. Cakes, produce, books and bric-a-brac stall.

Environment group - Kirkbymoorside Environment Group will be holding their next Famous Give or Take Day on Sunday, April 28, at Kirkbymoorside Memorial Hall, from 9am to noon. All your unwanted items can be delivered the previous day, Saturday, April 27, from 6pm to 8pm, or from 8am on the Sunday.

Camera club - The Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met last Thursday for the Applied Competitions for Portraiture and Natural History. The judge for the evening was Len Shepherd from Leyburn. The winner of the best print of the evening was Bob Ordidge with his entry “snow monkey in a snowstorm”, and runner-up was Iain Lesley with “Back Scratch”. In the Projected Digital Image section the winning entry was “green-eyed girl” by Judy Cowdy, with runner-up Paul Stephenson with “Greenfly”. The next meeting at the Moorside Bar and Club is on Thursday, April 18, when Bob Helliwell will be giving an illustrated lecture titled from LRPS to ARPS and beyond.

LOCKTON

Domino drive - The final domino drive of the season for the playing field refurbishment will be held on Saturday, April 13, at 7.30pm. Refreshments will be provided.

MALTON

Church - The new flower rota is ready to collect at St Leonard & St Mary’s RC Church. They will be decorating the church for Easter on Thursday, April 18, from 9.30am. The CAFOD Fast Day resulted in £456.10 being collected. Many thanks to all who supported this collection. As part of their campaign to recycle more, they are changing to votive candles in metal containers. These will be phased in as they finish using the plastic containers.

Service - The Good Friday Service will take place in Market Place, Malton, organised by Churches Together in Southern Ryedale, on Friday, April 19, at 10.45am. Refreshments will be served afterwards in St Michael’s Church.

Coffee morning - A coffee morning in support of World Parkinson’s Day will be held at Princess Court from 10.30am to noon on Saturday, April 13. There will also be a tombola, raffle etc, with proceeds for Ryedale Parkinson’s Support Group.

NAWTON

Coffee morning - A coffee morning will be held in the village hall on Saturday, April 13, from 10am to noon. There will be a raffle, raising funds for Candlelighters.

OSWALDKIRK

PICKERING

CAFOD - A collection for CAFOD raised £229.02 at St Joseph’s RC Church.

Weekly draw - Pickering Football Club’s weekly draw numbers for the week commencing April 1 were 34, 19 and 36. There was no winner, but as it was the first Monday of the month, there were three to share the £50, and they were Jim Hodgson, Bob Jones and Marie Neal. Next week the winning pot will be £225.

Bridge Club - In the latest session of duplicate bridge the winners were Madge Allison and Rob Ashdown with 61.81 per cent. In second place with 61.11 per cent were Graeme Matthew and Anne Avery. In third place were Dorothy Cordery and Sue Hardman with 52.08 per cent.

RILLINGTON

Quiz - Four teams playing for £34 took part in Jennie’s Mega Quiz in the Fleece Inn. After a tie-break with Gary, Steve & Co, Sue’s Crew + Col were the winners with 75 points. Team @ the Bar were third with 68 points. A tie-break with Dave’s Dollies saw Team @ the Bar the winners of the £8 jackpot. Jennie’s next Mega Quiz in the Fleece will be on Friday, April 19. Gary, Steve & Co were the winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz and also won the jackpot.

SEAMER

St Martin’s Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided and preached at the 9.30am service of BCP Holy Communion for Passion Sunday. Jim Baird assisted with the distribution of Communion, Carol Beswick and Enid Plevey were the welcomers, and Lindsay Smithson and Lucy Haycock served refreshments. Rev Liz Kitching led the 11am service of modern worship. The powerful sung worship was led by Richard Fuller with John and Sue Grice. Chris Birch led the intercessions and Elizabeth Bradley read, and Chris also served refreshments after the service.

Methodist Church - The service was taken by Deacon Andrew Carter. The vestry steward was Bob Jackman, organist Paul Hunter and the welcomer was Margaret Neave who also took the offering. The service began with Jean Cockerill reading the prayers for Lent and the placing of the element on the Lenten cross. Bible readings were given by Bert Blower, Tina Greenley and Margaret Neave who read from John’s gospel. The preacher next week at the Psalm Sunday service is Nikki Warner. The monthly coffee morning is on Saturday at 10.30am.

SHERBURN

St Hilda’s Church - The next service at St Hilda’s will be the Lay Service led by Barbara Grice on Palm Sunday, April 14, at 10.30am. On Good Friday, April 19, there will be a Walk of Witness starting from St Hilda’s at 11am, when the Cross will be carried up the village to the Methodist Church.

Duck Race - This will be held at East Beck at 3pm on Monday, April 22, raising funds for Sherburn Cricket Club and the Memorial Tubs. Cost is £1 per duck and there will be cash prizes for the first three ducks and also a special prize for the last duck home. Duck sponsors available at the East Riding and after the race there will be a raffle drawn at the East Riding. Any donations of raffle prizes would be appreciated. Phone Tracy Vitty on 01944 711403.

Methodist News - The Tuesday coffee morning hostess was Pat Woodley and the kind donations for coffee were kindly given to the St Catherine’s Hospice. Thursday Craft club meets at 1.30pm and you are invited to bring your craft and come along. The morning Worship on Sunday was led by the Worship Team. Opening prayers and praise were led by Jean Brown. The Lenten Liturgy for Passion Sunday was read by Sandra Cade and Jenny Ireland placed the whip on the cross as a symbol of Christ’s suffering. The Prayers of Intercession and closing worship was led by Sandra Cad. Next Sunday’s worship will be led by Christine Fenwick assisted by Jean Brown and the Worship Team. They meet at 10am for prayer in the hall, move into chapel for pre-worship at 10.15am for worship at 10.30am. Everyone welcome. On Good Friday, they will gather at St Hilda’s Church at 11am for a walk of witness in the village ending at the Methodist Chapel for coffee and hot cross buns. Please join us. At 2.30pm, a Good Friday service will be held in the Chapel led by the worship Team. This will be followed by tea in the hall.

Messy Church - This will be held on Saturday, April 13, when they will be celebrating Palm Sunday and hearing, “Henry’s Story”. There will be lots of craft activities. Meet for tea at 4.45pm.

Senior Citizen Luncheon Club - Members will meet on Wednesday, April 17, from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. Transport is available in Sherburn village. Phone Christine on 01944 711294.

SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - John Porter was the speaker at the Sinnington People’s Guild on Tuesday, March 19. His subject was “Scarborough lifeboats, yesterday, today and tomorrow”. He showed a very interesting film of the earliest lifeboats progressing to the very new Shannon. It was a very interesting evening and members were able to buy lifeboat souvenirs. John was presented with £111 collected from a previous musical evening. John Woodmancey was the pianist. Tea and biscuits were served. The guild held its AGM on April 2, chaired by Rev Ruth Duck. Reports from the president, secretary and treasurer were presented and approved. Officers elected were: president - Jill Simpson; Vice-presidents - Kay Metcalf and Sue Galley; secretary - Sue Galley; treasurer - Heather Nichols; pianist - John Woodmancey and reporter - Jill Simpson. Suggestions were offered for the 2019-2020 season. From the guild’s surplus funds, it was agreed to donate to the Sinnington Methodist Chapel, the air ambulance and the little Ampleforth boy, Freddie, who is funding raising for medical treatment. The guild will recommence in October with a musical evening. All enjoyed tea and biscuits.

STONEGRAVE

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge Club - The result from Monday, April 1 were: North/South winners were Barry Smith and Bob Wardell with 70.6 per cent. In second place were Sue Shuttleworth and Janet Sutor with 51.2 per cent. East/West winners were two new members Melanie Bailey and Nicky Riley with 57.8 per cent. In second place with 53.9 per cent were Pat and George Donnor.

Ladies Group - The leader Mary Hoggarth welcomed members to a beetle drive at the April meeting. The winner was Margaret Hand, and tea hostesses were Isabel Rowe and Pat Flear. The next meeting has been rescheduled for May 9, in the Methodist Schoolroom, at 2pm.

WESTOW

Cricket club - Westow Cricket Club has received special recognition award from the English Cricket Board for being a 5* All Stars Cricket Centre. The club received a perfect score five out of five from a parent satisfaction survey carried out by the ECB. Westow CC is one of only two clubs in North Yorkshire to receive this special recognition award. The club were presented with an “All Stars” cricket plaque by Matthew Hurren, Community Cricket Officer (Scarborough).

Blue bag collection - Westow Cricket Club is collecting old/unwanted clothes, shoes, belts, hats, soft toys, bedding and curtains (sorry no duvets) on Saturday, April 13. The items donated will be sold by weight and the money used towards the running costs of the cricket club. Anyone not from Westow is welcome to donate items. Please drop your items to 5 Kirkham View or in front of the village hall, from 10am to noon.

Thank you - The volunteers who open the Westow Cricket Club pavilion every weekend from 10am to 1pm would like to thank everyone who pops in for a drink/slice of cake or bacon roll, anyone who helps or donates something, to make the weekend pavilion “open house”, worthwhile. The volunteers are raising money to help towards the running costs of the cricket club and pavilion. The pavilion will be open again on Saturday, April 13, and Sunday, April 14, from 10am to 1pm each day.

Church Open days - The Church of St Mary will be open over the Easter weekend of April 20 and 21, from 10am to 4pm each day. There will be a children’s Easter egg hunt, refreshments, the chance to look around this beautiful church and find out about the church’s history. Everyone welcome.

Plant stall - The annual Westow Playing fields Association plant stall will be on Sunday, May 5, in the Westow Cricket Pavilion car park, starting at 10am. There will be the usual plants to purchase, including bedding plants. There will also be tea, coffee and home baking on sale. The money raised from plant sales and the refreshments will be used for the upkeep of the Westow play area. Donations of plants to sell are always appreciated and can be taken on the day.

WOMBLETON

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in the village hall on Saturday, April 27, raising funds for the village hall. £1.50 to play, including tea and biscuits.

Quiz evening - There will be a quiz evening on Friday, April 12, in the village hall, at 7.30pm.

WI MEETING

Snainton - Forty-one members attended the April meeting on Tuesday, April 2. Angela Howgate welcomed everyone and informed the members that Snainton had won the WI darts tournament. She then introduced the speaker Russell Lumb who had been an architect all his working life but was now a very gifted artist. Everyone was enthralled and very keen to see how he would paint a portrait of one of the members who had been lucky enough to have won the opportunity to have this done. Glynis Wilsher was the lucky candidate and she sat while Russell began. It was amazing to see and everyone cannot wait to see the finished portrait at the next meeting. It was a very enjoyable evening and Russell answered many questions which the members put to him. Wendy Craig Tyler gave a vote of thanks and tea with cake was served. The business was then discussed and Russell judged the competition of “A Host of Golden Daffodils”. The winner was Kay Clyde, second place Julia

Varney and third place Angela Howgate. Just to remind all members that the next meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 30, and not in May due to the Easter holidays. The meeting will be the debates around the resolutions and seeing the finished portrait.
