A 79-YEAR-OLD former monk is set to stand trial charged with 23 non-recent child sex offences.

At Scarborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday, Peter Turner of Parklands in Redcar - previously known as Father Gregory Carroll - entered a not guilty plea to the charges.

Fifteen of the alleged offences were against a pupil at Ampleforth School between 1984 and 1987. Eight of the charges were alleged to have taken place at a parish church in Cumbria between 1987 and 1990. The charges relate to three victims in total, all aged between nine and 13 at the time. Charges relating to allegations at Ampleforth include gross indecency and indecent assault.

A trial by jury was arranged for York Crown Court for May 7.

Mr Turner was granted unconditional bail.
