TOPSPIN 'A' have a seven-point lead at the top of Red Goat York & District Table Tennis League division one after beating their 'B' team 7-3.
Although the ‘A’ team could only muster two players, Jonny Wooldridge and Nathan Taylor were just too good on the night and remained unbeaten.
A treble from Aidan Ranftler could not prevent Clarence ‘A’ suffering a 6-4 reversal against second-placed York RI ‘A’.
At the foot of the table, Shiyi Ling ‘B’ boosted their survival hopes as Ben Lockyer starred in a surprise 6-4 victory against York RI ‘B’. Bottom team Clarence ‘B’ are now nine points adrift of Shiyi Ling but they do have three games in hand.
Division two champions-elect York RI ‘C’ had Andy Kirk to thank as they saw off a battling Clarence ‘D’ 7-3 and Graham Hatfield was on top form as Clarence ‘C’ were pushed to the limit by Poppleton before clinching a 6-4 victory with a doubles win. Marcin Kotlinski and Russ Barton well played well for the villagers, both bagging braces.
Paul Halmshaw and John McLaughlin were untroubled as Wigginton ‘A’ thrashed relegated Clarence ‘E’ 8-2 and a maximum from Gareth Bryning was decisive as Bootham ‘A’ edged a close encounter with promotion play-off rivals Ryedale ‘A’ 6-4.
Wigginton ‘B’ have been crowned division three champions and Strensall ‘B’ have secured the second promotion slot.
In a crunch battle at the foot of the table South Bank ‘B’ grabbed a vital 6-4 victory over BT ‘B’ with Chris McLuskie the star man.
York RI ‘F’ defeated a depleted Shiyi Ling ‘C’ 7-3 while Dave Simpson and Howard Broadband recorded maximums as BT ‘A’ beat Clarence ‘F’ 7-3.
Fourth division champions Wigginton ‘C’ have completed their fixtures, winning all 21 of their matches.
Second-placed Wigginton ‘D’ prepared for their promotion play-off by whitewashing their ‘E’ team.
The evergreen Mike Belton starred as Clarence ‘H’ cruised to an 8-2 victory over Shiyi Ling ‘D’.
