SCHOOL children and teachers dressed as their favourite characters to celebrate World Book Day last Thursday.

World Book Day, which is held each March, is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading.

Now in its 22nd year, the event aims to encourage children to explore the joy of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.

Schools across Ryedale took part in the event with pupils at Leavening Primary School dressing as their favourite characters.

St Benedict’s Primary School in Ampleforth held a sponsored read over the half-term break, which ended last Thursday, when the children were invited to dress as their favourite book character.

Pickering Junior School marked World Book Day and World Maths Day which was held last Wednesday.

Head teacher Michaela De Barr said: “We combined the two special days and had a maths-themed book week.

“The children took part in activities that focused on a core maths-themed book, including The Lion’s Share - fractions. The children also dressed up as their favourite book character.”
