APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Singalong - The bi-weekly community singalong was held in the village hall on Wednesday, February 27. The next singalong will be Wednesday, March 6, at 5pm, in the village hall. All welcome.

Bishop Hagg Wood - The latest Saturday morning work task as part of Appleton & Spaunton Community Interest Company’s management of Bishop Hagg Wood was attended by five woodland folk. The work task was located in the group’s storage field and involved a great deal of tidying. The next work task will be March 30 at 10am.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The service at All Saints on Sunday, March 3, will be at 11am. It will be Holy Communion taken by Rev Peter Lear. On Saturday, March 2, all children in the area are welcome to Messy Church, which will take place in Hutton Buscel Village Hall, starting with a light tea at 4pm and followed by crafts and activities. Children need to be accompanied by an adult, and older youngsters welcome to come along to help the younger ones with their creations. The session finishes at 5.30pm. Tuesday, March 5 is Shrove Tuesday. This is now a regular time for members of the church fundraising group and friends to come to church do some annual jobs, including cleaning the magnificent brass chandelier, drink coffee and finish up with pancakes. More helpers are always appreciated, there will be cleaning materials but please bring your own gloves if needed and any favourite cloths or polishes.

Musical Evening - The village hall recently hosted talented duo, The Blackheart Orchestra for an evening of music and songs. Complete with a multitude of instruments and synthesisers, the two performers filled the hall with their music and entertained us for the evening. The audience were treated to many of the songs from their new album and had the chance to buy their CD as well. A supper was served which was included in the ticket price, and a bar was provided for wine sales. The event was well supported and after paying the performers, the hall made a profit of £197. Thank you to everyone who supported this venture and a special thank you to the anonymous donor who sent us a donation of £25.

Brompton Local History Society - The next meeting to be held in the village hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday, March 6, will be of special interest as it will host Trevor Pearson from Scarborough Archaeological Society, speaking about the recent archaeological work at Brompton.

CROPTON

Village Hall - The next coffee morning in the village hall is on Tuesday, March 5, from 10.30am. Everyone is most welcome.

FARNDALE

Domino drive – The last of this seasons will be held on Tuesday, March 12, at 7.30pm, in the Band Room, Low Mill. This will also be the last in the band room before we return to the new village hall next season. Everyone welcome for a fun evening whether you’re an expert or have never played before.

GILLING EAST

HOVINGHAM

Hovingham Market - The next market takes place on Saturday, March 2, from 10.30am to 1.30pm, with more than 60 stalls selling local fresh produce and crafts. The guest stalls will be Elizabeth soaps, made with local goat’s milk, Rural Products, Portuguese delicacies, Glorious Game, High Farndale, free range, rare breed pork and Baby Royal, baby clothes. North Yorkshire Rotters will be available for advice about reducing food waste. The Community Café will be run by Hovingham Church. Local singer songwriter, Josh, will play music and our volunteer market manager is Chris Stark.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - A family pub quiz will take place at the Crown Inn on Sunday, March 3, at 8.30pm. Entry £2, including a sandwich supper. Prize is a voucher to spend at The Crown. Even in aid of St Chad’s Church, Hutton-le-Hole.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Bridge Club - The result from Tuesday, February 19. North/South - In first place with 60.7 per cent were Steve Lonsdale and Judith O’Donnell. Three couples tied for second place with 52 per cent. They were Tim Johnson and Cynthia Metcalfe, Barry Smith and Bob Wardell and Pat Hainsworth and Angela Smith. East/west winners were Tony and Bo Simpson with 53.8 per cent and in second place Graeme Matthew and Mary Mortonson with 53.5 per cent.

Coffee morning - Kirkbymoorside Brass Band invite you to a coffee morning with a difference. They have a coffee, cake and music morning on Saturday, March 2, from 10.30am to 12.30pm, at the Methodist Church. Enjoy cake and coffee while being entertained by players from all the sections of Kirkbymoorside Band.

Chanticleer Singers - A Baroque choral masterpieces under musical director Jane Sturmheit, organist Geoffrey Coffin, sopranos Jenny Bianco and Linda Clayton at All Saints Church on Saturday, March 16, at 7.30pm. Camera Club - The Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met at the Moorside Bar and Club in Shaw Drive for an illustrated presentation by Angela Hargreaves, an award-winning photographer, titled The Art of Metamorphosis. The next meeting at the Moorside Bar and Club is an Open Competition on Thursday, March 7.

WI - The next meeting is at 2.15pm on Monday, March 4, in the Methodist Chapel Schoolroom, when members will discover what happens when you dial 999. Visitors and new members are always welcome.

Marie Curie - The Kirkbymoorside group wish to thank one and all who throughout 2018 gave their support and a grand total of £45,716.58 was raised. To date, since the group was formed in June 1999, £436,209.16 has been raised. Sturdy Court - There is a domino drive at Sturdy Court on Monday, March 11, at 7.30pm. All are welcome.

Tuesday Group - Members meet on Tuesday, March 12. Members visit the Pickering group for an evening with Thornton Dale choir.

Menzown - Plan B had to be implemented at the meeting of Menzown as the speaker was ill and unable to attend. So members chose a number from the hat and then had to speak for five minutes on the allocated subject. An evening of hilarity followed as members heard of the varied stories and experiences of different members.

MALTON

Church - This year’s Family Fast Day at St Leonard & St Mary’s RC Church, Malton, will be on Friday, March 15. Envelopes will be available at all Masses on March 9 and 10. Thank you to everyone who supported the First Communion candidates’ coffee and cake sale last Sunday. It raised £70 for CAFOD’s connect2Colombia.

Bridge club - John and Beryl Bramall were the winners in Malton Bridge Club’s handicap pairs session on Wednesday with 59.6 per cent. Madge Allison and Derek Fox came second with 58.3 per cent, while Bryan Hone and Richard Hazelrigg were third with 58.2 per cent. On Thursday afternoon the North-South winners were Caroline Peall-Clegg and Terry Herbert with Audrey Shaw and Joan Pickering heading the East-West scores.

Garden club - At their last meeting held on Tuesday, February 19, the guest presenter was Ann Simpson. Ann’s innovated use of natural materials and flowers entranced a large audience in the memorial hall, Old Malton. The flower club meets on the third Tuesday in the month at 2pm and welcomes visitors and new members to their varied programme of demonstrations practice classes, workshops and outings. Next meeting on Tuesday, March 19 is a practice class entitled Upcycle for Spring.

NAWTON

Quiz - A pub quiz will take place at The Rose & Crown on Friday, March 29, at 7.30pm. It will be raising funds for Kathy Boothman, who is running the London Marathon for the charity Candlelighters, which is the charity supporting her daughter Grace, aged 10, through her treatment. PICKERING

Domino drive - A domino drive will be held at the Recreation Club on Friday, March 8, at 7.30pm, for the bowls club.

Football club - Pickering Town Football Club Weekly Draw numbers for week commencing February 18 were 28, 10 and 31. There were no winners so next week’s jackpot will be £150. Anyone wishing to join can get in touch with any football committee member or call at Dunning Butchers.

Bridge Club - Last week was the fourth of five weeks of Handicapped Pairs competitions. The winners with 63.67 per cent were Madeleine Webber and Beryl Bramall. In second place with 59.35 per cent were Gill Hardcastle and Graham Burgess. In third place were Pat Hainsworth and Chris Brett with 56.79 per cent.

RILLINGTON

Quiz - Six teams playing for £46 took part in Jennie’s Mega Quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners with 58.5 points were Honeymooners, second were Team @ the Bar (51) and third Gary, Steve & Co (50). The £12 jackpot was won by Honeymooners. Jennie’s next mega quiz will be on Friday, March 8. The winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz were Steve & Co.

RYEDALE

Embroiderers’ Guild - The Ryedale branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild met in Snainton Village Hall. Members exchanged the “travelling books” for the first time. Each month members will do one embroidery for another members’ book. The theme for the first few months is circles, and there were a wide variety of styles of embroidery. The speaker in the afternoon was Steffi Glaves. She spoke about her experience at York College and De Montford University and showed some of the work she produced while a student. She is now working part-time as a teacher and makes jewellery for sale, ear rings and pendants in very fine crochet and enamel work. Christina Hampshire gave the vote of thanks.

SEAMER

St Martin’s Church - The vicar the Rev Andrew Moreland presided and preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion. Frances Simons gave a Bible reading, and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano. Gisa Moore and Dot Francis were sidespersons and Lindsay Smithson and Lucy Haycock served refreshments. Rev Andrew presided and preached again at the 11am modern communion service. Chris Bray led the intercessions, Elizabeth Bradley read and Elizabeth Moreland assisted with the chalice. Steve Raettig led the sung worship with John and Sue Grice and John Taylor. Jenny and Duncan Bland supervised the young people. Elizabeth Bradley was the sidesperson and Helen Swallow served refreshments.

Methodist Church - The service was taken by Deacon Andrew Carter. The vestry steward was Bob Jackman, organist Doreen Lawson, welcomer Margaret Neave who also took the offering. Bible readings were given by Bert Blower who read from Luke’s gospel and Margaret Harris who read from Matthew’s gospel. The theme of Andrew’s sermon was prayer. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Rev Dr Kevin Ridd and Holy Communion will be observed.

SHERBURN

Sports and community club - Another busy night at the Sherburn Community and Sports Club latest bingo session saw 42 Dabbers witness £542 paid out in a entertaining nights play. The Higher/Lower game moves to £30 next time. Bingo failing two from home (unlucky). Congratulations to Matty’s Millions Winner Scooping a whopping £90 million. Many thanks to Natasha for setting up. The next bingo is on Saturday, March 16.

Methodist News - The Tuesday coffee morning hostess was Liz Aconley and your kind donations for coffee continue to given to St Catherine’s Hospice. The café-style worship in the chapel on Sunday was led by the Worship Team and Christine Fenwick as the planned preacher Michael Kitchen was unable to come due to illness. Members looked at the work which goes on at the chapel to see how this could be done more effectively. The service next week will be at 10.30am led by Rev Nigel Spencer. Pre-service prayers will take place in the hall from 10am to 10.15am when we will move into the chapel for pre-worship.

SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - Dr and Mrs Hartrey visited the Sinnington People’s Guild on Tuesday, February 19. Garhwal, in the Himalayas, Northern India, was only opened to visitors in 1993. In 1994 Dr and Mrs Hartrey with two friends trekked to the Milam Glacier. Visiting during the monsoon season, they have the advantage of seeing many beautiful flowers in the green of the country. Spectacular slides showed the rough terrain, the snow covered mountains, teeming rivers and the local inhabitants who were both curious and friendly. The Guild expressed their enjoyment and thanks for an enjoyable evening. Jill Simpson was the pianist. Tea and biscuits were served. The next meeting is on Shrove Tuesday at 7.15pm. The Rev Ruth Duck will lead us into Lent.

SNAINTON

St Stephen’s Church - Pancake Saturday will take place on Saturday, March 2, from 11am, in Snainton Village Hall. Join them for coffee and cakes from 11am or perhaps come along from noon for soup and a roll. With Pancake Day only a few days away, sweet pancakes for pudding. Alternative puddings available. There will be a raffle, tombola, cake stall and handicrafts. No entrance charge, just pay for what you eat. All in aid of church roof appeal.

Village Hall - Friday, March 29, sees the return of the ever-popular Easy Band from the Scarborough Music Centre. The concert begins at 7.30pm and tickets at £5 each are available from John Beadle on 01723 859442 or at the door. Refreshments will be available. Please come along and support these extremely talented young musicians. Proceeds are for the upkeep of the premises.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Ladies Group - Members had their annual meeting on February 5 and have had another successful year. They had lots of interesting speakers who choose their charities as payment for their time given to come to us. The charities were Pickering in Bloom, Beck Isle Museum, Scarborough Lifeboat, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Pickering Explorer Scouts and Thornton-le-Dale Methodist Church, all who received £75 each. All money made from subscriptions and events are given to various charities. Mary Hoggarth will be the leader this coming year and a programme of speakers, etc, is in the process of being made. All ladies are welcome to join. The group usually meet the first Thursday of each month in the Methodist Schoolroom at 2pm. Look out for poster at the church. The next event is on March 7, which is a meal at Balderson’s Cafe.

Bridge Club - The result from Monday, February 18. In first place with 58.3 per cent were Barry Smith and Bob Wardell. In second place with 56.3 per cent were Janet Sutor and Sue Shuttleworth.

WESTOW

Open House - Volunteers are serving tea, coffee, home baking and bacon rolls in Westow Cricket Club Pavilion on Saturday, March 2, and Sunday, March 3, from 10am to 1pm. You can play pool, cards, dominoes, watch TV or just chat. There will also be second hand books available by donation. Everyone welcome, including well behaved dogs on leads. Why not arrange to meet with friends. Money raised will go towards the cost of running the cricket club and pavilion.

Spring Fair - Westow Cricket Club is holding a spring fair on Saturday, March 23, from 10.30am to 1pm. There will be various stalls, including a cake stall and tombola in aid of the cricket club. Hula Hoop workshop - On Tuesday, March 26, there is to be a Hula Hoop workshop in Westow Cricket Club Pavilion, from 7pm to 8pm. As well as waist hooping, there will be lots of moves and tricks including some partner moves. A range of hoop sizes will be available, to try, so you can get the one that’s just right for you. YCA MEETINGS

Wombleton - June welcomed 16 members to the 2019 AGM. The minutes of the 2018 AGM were read and approved. June gave a brief outline of the speakers and visits in 2018. Christine presented the treasurers’ report which showed a relatively healthy balance meaning that the subscriptions of £17 can remain the same. The election of officers was straightforward as all agreed to stand for another year. Pauline thanked the officers and the committee for a most enjoyable and interesting programme of speakers and visits. The minutes of the January meeting were read and approved. Carol distributed menus for the Spring Lunch to be held on March 21 at KMS Golf Club and asked that they be returned, along with the money for the meal, by the next meeting. Prizes were awarded for the 2018 monthly competition to Ann Wilson with 36pts and runner-up Vera Kendall. June announced that tickets for the musical evening on May 21, featuring “Malarkey”, will be on sale from next month priced at £5 to include refreshments. The branch will provide prizes for the raffle. The meeting on June 18, where the speaker will be a member of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, is to be an open meeting with all donations given to that charity. Members were reminded that Wombleton branch is responsible for the tombola at the Ryedale Show and were asked to donate suitable items and unwanted gifts. These will be collected at subsequent meetings. The raffle was drawn, refreshments were served.
