A MAN died after he fell out of his bedroom window, an inquest heard.
Neil Barry Culpan, a painter and decorator from Thwing, north of Driffield, died aged 60 on October 22, 2018, at Scarborough Hospital.
The inquest in Northallerton last Wednesday heard written evidence from his wife Dawn, who said that on the night in question her husband had gone to bed before her. Later on she had heard knocking and saw him lying outside the kitchen door, having fallen from the window. “He insisted on no ambulance,” she said.
She said the bedroom window was akin to a French door, but there was no safety railing across the opening. It was the next morning when an ambulance was called, she added.
He was found to have broken ribs, a broken collar bone and punctured lungs. He died in hospital in the early hours of the next morning. A post-mortem examination by David Scoones of James Cook Hospital in Middlebrough found that heart disease also contributed to his death.
Coroner Michael Oakley said: “He’s fallen from the window in his bedroom. They were full-length doors, in effect, and there was no barrier. He survived the fall but suffered injuries which were exacerbated by an existing heart condition.” He recorded a conclusion of accidental death.
