MEMBERS of Malton WI are collecting sanitary items on behalf of the Red Box Project.
The scheme is a community-based, not-for-profit initiative, which aims to support young people by providing red boxes filled with sanitary items to schools.
Malton WI president Sharon Cawte said: “The red box appeal in simple terms is a box held in secondary schools monitored by the pastoral carers.
“It allows girls in poverty to access sanitary items free of charge, no questions asked, no form to fill in, just to use. It also stocks wipes and underwear.
“The box is managed by the school to stop it being abused.
“We feel we should run this collection as in years to come these girls may just become WI members themselves where they will then find plenty of opportunity to return the favour and help others in times of need.”
Sharon added: “As a group we find it really sad that this appeal is needed, the government say austerity a thing of the past, things are more difficult than ever for a lot of people.”
