A VILLAGE is set to be without its post office from next month.

The Best-One convenience store, petrol station and post office in Snainton High Street was formerly a Costcutter until May last year.

However, the retail premises closed on New Year’s Eve, and the post office is set to close on Saturday, February 23.

Owner Kathryn Thornton said that they were sad to be closing but the business hadn’t been viable for

them for a number of reasons; she cited the rise of internet shopping and supermarket deliveries as two of them.

The village will be left with no store, although the fish and chip shop will sell some grocery items, she added.

A spokesman for the Post Office said: “We can confirm that the postmaster who runs Snainton Post Office has given us notice and will be withdrawing the premises for Post Office use next month.

“The branch was run independently and while we always work hard to maintain Post Office services, from time to time, branches do temporarily close.

“When this happens, we always look to restore services as quickly as possible, as we know how important Post Offices are to communities.

“We have had interest from some local retailers who are interested in running this branch, but it is very early stages so we are unable to comment further at the moment.

“We would like to reassure customers that we are committed to maintaining vital Post Office services for the local community – including banking services like cash withdrawals from high street bank account, bill payments, and of course a wide range of postal services.”

The property - incorporating shop, post office, garage forecourt, large detached garage, three bedroom cottage and 0.3 acre plot - is for sale through Cundalls.

Mrs Thornton added that it had been for sale for 13 years.
