DOZENS of riders and hounds took part in a traditional New Year’s Day hunt in the winter sunshine last week.
The Derwent Hunt runs across the Ryedale countryside from outside The Hall in Thornton-le-Dale, with dogs and riders on horseback marking the start of 2019. The hunt has been taking place for more than 200 years, and it still attracts a number of spectators to this day.
The pack was founded in 1808 by Richard Johnson Hill, who kennelled the hounds at The Hall.
It was then his home but later became a pub and hotel as well as a care home, leading the hunt to make it their meeting point.
