GILLING EAST

Village hall - There is a lot going on in Gilling East Village Hall this January. Sunday, January 6, sees the return of the craft classes, starting at 2pm. Places must be booked by emailing gillingeastevents@hotmail.co.uk. There is the quiz night on Sunday, January 13, in the Fairfax Arms, followed by a bingo night in the village hall on Thursday, January 24, as well as the regular weekly pilates class, gentle chair based exercise class and the art group. Amnesty International - The

Kirkbymoorside group will meet at the home of Chrissie in Kirkbymoorside on Tuesday, January 8, at 2pm. The group wish to thank those who have donated to Amnesty this last year.

All Saints - Members of All Saints fundraisers have a planning meeting on Tuesday, January 22, in the church at 7pm to start plans for the coming year annual fundraising events. This is an opportunity for everyone with offers of help and ideas to attend.

Table top - A table top sale will be held in the community library on Saturday, January 12, from 9.30am to noon. Tables are available from £2. To book a table, phone Geoff on 07715 700366.

Menzown - The first meeting of 2019 will take place on Monday, January 15, at The King’s Head Hotel at 7pm. The guest speaker is Antony Bentley from the

picture framing and restoration gallery.

Tuesday Group - Members meet on Tuesday, January 8, in the Methodist Jubilee Room for an evening of games or recipes. The leader is Daisy and the tea hostesses are Linda and Pat. The meeting starts at 7.30pm.

Coffee morning - The All Saints Church coffee morning will take place on Saturday, January 5, in church from 9.30am. Everyone welcome.

Oasis - Join with the group for coffee and a chat each Tuesday in the Methodist Church from 10am to noon. Everyone welcome.

MALTON

Bridge club - In the penultimate session of Malton Bridge Club’s positional pairs event there was a win for Keith Freeman and Mike Shawcross. Second place went to Richard Hazlerigg and Bryan

Hone while Beryl Bramall and

Madeleine Webber were third. The overall lead remains with Derek Fox and Richard Hilton ahead of Annette Jackson and Rob Ashdown with Madge Allison and Tricia Pearce in third place. Both the Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon sessions resume this week after the Christmas break, with the next set of fixtures in the Yorkshire League to follow on Sunday.

Flower club - The December meeting of Malton and Norton Flower Club was a practice class entitled “Jack Frost”, which was well-supported by 16 participants. The winners were: Novice - Chrysa Apps; Intermediate - Lorna Mastaglio; Lower Advanced - Margaret Bell; Advanced - Jan Anderson;

Gold Advanced - Lynn Dees, who also won the trophy for best interpretation. A Christmas buffet lunch and entertainment were provided by the committee. Weekly draw - The winning numbers for the week commencing December 24 for Pickering Town Football Club weekly draw were 19, 12 and 40. There was no winner so the prize next week will be £375.

SEAMER

Church news - The vicar Rev Andrew Moreland, presided and preached at both holy communion services on December 23. At the 9.30am service, Edna Burton accompanied the hymns, Dot Francis read and Jean Donovan assisted with the chalice. Sue Johnson and Julie Stephenson were the sidespeople and Julie also served refreshments between the services. At the 11am service, Becky and Tim Cremer led the prayers and Elizabeth Bradley read and also assisted with the chalice. The worship band enabled a powerful sense of the presence of the Holy Spirit and was led by Richard Fuller with Steve Raettig, John and Sue Grice and John Taylor. Jenny and Duncan Bland ran the young people’s Sunday Club. Jo Taylor was the sidesperson and Helen Swallow served refreshments after the service.

SHERBURN

Methodist News - Members

met at the home of Kim and Tony Canterbury to enjoy carols round the fire. Thank you so much for this lovely time of Fellowship and the delicious refreshments. On Christmas Eve, the film It’s A Boy! was enjoyed and was a lovely preparation for the celebrations the following day. Christmas morning worship heralded the arrival of our Saviour Jesus born in the stable at Bethlehem. Chris and Sandra Cade lit the white candle of the advent ring and read the Advent Liturgy. The Advent journey completed, Sandra led the prayers of thanks and Jean Brown read to the story of the

nativity from Luke’s Gospel.

Afterwards, as they enjoyed refreshments, the children made a gingerbread village ready to enjoy on Sunday after worship. On Sunday, at 10.30am, the worship will be led by Christine Fenwick.
