THOUSANDS of people turned out to watch York's Christmas lights switched on last night in York city centre by panto star Martin Barrass and the Lord and Lady Mayoress of York, during the first evening of late night shopping and a bigger and better St Nicholas Fair.
The St Leonard’s Hospice ‘Light up a Life’ Christmas Tree in St Helen's Square has hundreds of twinkling lights representing the life of someone special, while raising funds for the hospice.
The ceremony was accompanied by Lucy's Pop Choir and the Shepherd Group Junior Brass Band.

More than 160,000 LED lights will create a special atmosphere across the city, including the four historic bars; Micklegate, Bootham, Monkbar and Walmgate.
The lights, returning for a third year, coordinated by the York BID and supported by Make It York, will brighten the city throughout the York Christmas Festival up to December 23 and then continue right through to mid-February, with the scheme expanded again to include New Street and Colliergate.
Paul Whiting, Head of Visit York, said: “We hope all our visitors will enjoy a magical visit this festive season. York truly is the most festive city in the UK and we’re expecting a really busy season from November right through to Christmas day.”
Andrew Lowson, Director, York BID, said: “The winter months are a vital time of year for local businesses and the tourism industry. York’s winter lights and Christmas lights are part of our commitment to enhancing the inviting atmosphere and will be a must see for residents and visitors alike.”
The St Nicholas Fair will be open every day until 6pm and until 8pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday up until December 23, and. Shambles Market will open later too on these nights until 6pm.
Adding to the ambience in Shambles Market, the Food Court will be opening late on these nights, offering delicious street food and Thor’s Tipi in Parliament Street will once again be inviting visitors to sample their mulled wine and sit by the roaring fire.
First York will also be extending Park & Ride services for late night shopping on Thursdays with services running every 15 minutes.
