THIRTY-EIGHT of York’s 1,894 businesses that serve food have a hygiene rating of zero, the lowest score, or one.
All premises across the district where food is prepared or served, including schools, hospitals and shops, are inspected regularly by the council.
They are given a rating from 5, the best, to 0, the worst. We have listed all the premises currently awarded the worst two rankings: 0 ("Urgent Improvement Necessary") and 1 ("Major Improvement Necessary").
Matt Boxall, head of public protection at City of York Council, said: “It is welcome news that the vast majority of the city’s food businesses have good food hygiene and safety standards.
“There are more businesses with a score of 5 than any other number.
“Our inspections, together with the advice and guidance we offer to all food-related businesses, support responsible business owners while helping to identify those that need to improve.
“We have taken robust enforcement action against a number of businesses with the lowest scores.
“You can check the ratings online at ratings.food.gov.uk. York is a great place to eat out.”
