Remembrance Sunday Service - There will be a service of Holy Communion at 9am in the Church of St John the Baptist on Remembrance Sunday before the Parish comes together for a Service of Remembrance at St Mary in Birdsall at 10.30am. The fallen from our villages will be remembered by name.

AMOTHERBY

Jigsaw festival - A huge thank you to all who supported the St Helen’s Jigsaw Festival in Amotherby. People came from as far away as Carlisle and over £450 was raised on the day.

APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Waterworks - The final event of the “Waterworks” project will be held in the Village Hall on Wednesday, November 14, when Mike Beresford will give a talk on the water aid project and be presented with a cheque for more than £4,000 raised by the community.

Christmas fair - A Christmas fair will be held in the Village Hall, from 10am to noon, on Saturday, November 17. All proceeds to the church and chapel. Come along for stalls, a raffle and refreshments.

AYTON

Memorial service - A memorial service is being held at St John the Baptist Church, Main Street, East Ayton, at 10am, on Sunday, November 11, followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the Ayton War Memorial in the church grounds. Following this Ayton Jubilee Committee is inviting everyone back to the village hall to look at articles of interest. There will be an opportunity to learn how to trace your family helped by Ayton Family History Group, please bring your laptop. Come and learn of life locally during those war years. BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Domino drive - The domino drive on Thursday, October 25 was very well supported and raised £150 for village hall funds. The overall winner was A Fletcher with a total score of 126. Second was P Robson on a 118, closely followed by a tie for third place between E Grayson and C Robinson both on 116. Other prize winners were M Myers, J Gospel, I Robinson, A Wildsmith, E Mudd, R Robinson, K Shields, L Jarvis, M Kirby, P Myers, A Mudd, D Rogers, C Cockerill, S Warriner and D Pennock. J Cockerill was the longest sitter and carried off the half dozen eggs. Raffle prize winners were D Cowton, A Fletcher, A Mushet, C Robinson, C Fletcher, I Robinson, J Gospel, M Baxter, J Dawson, K Shields, K Robson, M Kirby, M Leconby, L Jarvis and E Perrin.

Poppy concert - Tickets for the concert, which will be held in All Saints Church, on Saturday, November 10, are on sale at £5 to include a drink and canapés. Distributed throughout the church will be flower displays celebrating each of the names inscribed on Brompton’s War Memorial and the evening will begin with the muffled ringing of the church bells. Tickets for children are free. All money raised from the concert will go to the British Legion Poppy Appeal. For tickets, which can be left on the door for you if you are unable to collect them, are available by phoning Di Ford on 01723 859211.

Church - Remembrance Day service on Sunday, November 11, starts at the war memorial which is opposite the Forge tea rooms. This act of Remembrance, which will be taken by Dr Don Jones, commences at 10.55am and includes the two minutes’ silence. It continues at All Saints Church at 11.15am. Those who would prefer not to stand outside are welcome to come directly into church where the two minutes’ silence will also be kept.

FARNDALE

Remembrance Sunday - The Remembrance Service (with Holy Communion) will be held at St Mary’s Church, Farndale, at 2.30pm on Sunday, November 11. All welcome.

Domino drive - The second domino drive of the season will be held in the Band Room, Low Mill, Farndale, on Tuesday, November 13, at 7.30pm.

Stall – On Wednesday, November 21, Farndale Village Hall will have a stall selling home-baked cakes and the 2019 Farndale Calendar stall in Towlers Arch, Kirkbymoorside. The calendar is also for sale in BATA Kirkbymoorside, Feversham Arms Inn, Farndale, and Lion Inn, Blakey.

GILLING EAST

Village hall - The inaugural Sunday craft class at Gilling Village Hall was a great success. Twelve of people had a go at creating a fabric wreath in Christmas colours and thanks go to Kristel Hughes of Zebramingo crafts who led the class. There is another class on Sunday, November 18, at 2pm, in Gilling Village Hall where they will be making a Christmas arrangement. If you would like to join, it costs £10 and places do need to be booked by emailing gillingeastevents@hotmail.co.uk. They are hoping in the new year to run a monthly class, details of which will be on the Facebook page, Gilling East Village Hub.

HELMSLEY

RNLI coffee morning - Please note that there has been a mix-up with the dates for the coffee morning at The Black Swan, Helmsley. This will now be on Friday, November 30, from 10am to noon.

Prize bingo - The RNLI is having a prize bingo night on Saturday, November 17, at 7.30pm. The event is at The Scouts Hut, Helmsley. There will also be a raffle.

HOVINGHAM

Village market - Hovingham Village Market was held last Saturday with periodic sunshine and a strong breeze. However this did not deter more than 800 people buying from the 60 stalls. Guest stall Bakehouse in the Barn was popular and St Helen’s Church, Amotherby, had a tombola and were selling a variety of homemade tablet, to raise funds. Poppy sales were buoyant with the 2018 badges being the most popular item. Many people went to see the display outside Hovingham All Saints Church, of Replica field burial crosses commemorating the 17 men from the village who died in the First World War. Also the parade of pennants commemorating all of the 78 of the men from the village who went to defend our country. Josh the busker was in fine voice and the cafe, run by Hovingham All Saints Church, sold out of bacon and sausage butties. The next market will be on Saturday, December 1, from 10.30am to 1.30pm, with an additional one on Saturday, December 15. Christmas music will be by Swinton Brass Band and there will be a live donkey in attendance.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Bridge club - The result from October 30. North/South winners were Judith O’Donell and David Whitehead with 74.4 per cent, in second place George Goodall and Anne Avery with 60.4 per cent. East/West winners were Paul Whittaker and Tony Ward with 59.8 per cent in second place Graeme Matthew and Mary Mortonson with 55.9 per cent.

Camera club - The Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met at the Moorside Bar and Club in Shaw Drive for the first Open Competition of the new season. The judge for the evening was Mike Barnard from Bridlington. In the print section he awarded Mike Ward first place with his image titled Peggy’s point Lighthouse. Runner-up was Bob Ordidge with his image Golden Eagle on Fox. The Projected Digital Image section was won by Sharon Marwood with her image Widdall Red Squirrel, with Paul Stephenson runner-up with his image Feed Me Feed Me. The next meeting at the Moorside Bar and Club is on Thursday, November 15, when Ray Bramall, from Doncaster, will be giving an illustrated talk titled All kinds of everything.

All Soul’s Service - The congregation packed All Saints Church for All Souls Memorial Service. The vicar Rev Mark Brosnan give the welcome and address. Reading were taken by Rev Kevin Gowland Methodist church and Father Kenington R C church. The hymns sung were A Bide With Me, The King Of Love My Shepherd Is and Lord Of All Hopefulness. During the service the congregation were invited to light a candle in memory of those who died.

History Group - All are welcome to view an exhibition that commemorates the impact of the Great War on the community of Kirkbymoorside. This tells the stories of men who lost their lives in the conflict and of women who served as nurses in the local military hospitals. Please see the display boards in the ground floor corridor of Kirkbymoorside Library and Information Centre. Repair cafe - The next Repair Cafe will be held on Saturday, November 17, from 9.30am to 12.30pm, in The Moorside Room. Rather than throwing broken items away, they can be brought along for repair, or advice, free of charge. Electrical items, computers, clothing, tools, household items, toys, garden tools – the team will have a go at most things.

Christmas market - Kirkbymoorside Christmas Market will be held on Saturday, November 24, from 10am to 3pm. It is an excellent event to buy Christmas gifts and goodies and to enjoy what Kirkbymoorside has to offer. Kirkbymoorside Brass Band will be playing in the main street, activities for children include face painting and Santa’s Grotto in the Dugout, from noon to 2pm. There will be more than 30 craft and local produce stalls in the main street and the Memorial Hall.

Tree festival - There is to be a community Christmas tree festival in the Methodist Church from December 16 to 23. It will be a great opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate Christmas. The trees can be real or artificial and any height up to 5ft. Domino drive - Sturdy Court’s next domino drive will be on Monday, November 19, at 7.30pm.

RBL - To commemorate the end of the First World War, the Kirkbymoorside branch of the Royal British Legion and Kirkbymoorside Town Council invite everyone to attend the Remembrance Day Parade and service on Sunday, November 11. The parade will leave the Moorside Club at 10.40am and march to All Saints Church for the service. Following the service, the parade will return to the Moorside Club where the town band will give a concert of First and Second World War music. Everyone is invited to join them for the concert whether you attend the parade or not. At 6.55pm, buglers will sound the Last Post at Pump Hill.

Menzown - Members’ own presentations will take place at the meeting in the King’s Head Dining Room on Monday, November 12, at 7.30pm. Members are invited to bring their Christmas meal menu choices, for which £18.50 is due; cheques in favour of Menzown.

Domino drive - The bowling club monthly domino drive is on Saturday, November 17, in the club house at 7.30pm. All welcome.

Oasis - Join with them for coffee, company and a chat each Tuesday in the Methodist Church, from 10am to noon. All welcome.

Entertainment - Sean Leonard will be at the Moorside bar and club on Saturday, November 18, at 8pm for 8.30pm.

Ladies Fellowship - Members meet on Wednesday, November 14, in the library at 7.30pm for a craft evening.They plan to make decorations for the tree taking part in the community Christmas tree festival to be held in December.

LEAVENING

Remembrance Service - Leavening will be holding a Remembrance Day Service at 10am on Sunday, November 11, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. The service will be led by Louise Hayes, Methodist Church lay worker. The service will be remembering those from Leavening who died in the First World War, several of whom will have been taught in what is now the church but was, until 1906, the village school. The service will be followed by a short act of Commemoration at 11am outside church. All are welcome to either the service or the act of commemoration or both. This service is in addition to the usual parish remembrance day service which will take place at Birdsall at 10.30am.

Embroidery exhibition - There is to be an exhibition in Leavening church from November 7 to November 14 to commemorate the Great War 1914 to 1918. The Leavening embroidery group invite everyone. The church will be open each day from 9am to dusk. Refreshments will be served on Saturday, November 10, from 10am onwards. Any donations will be given to the British Legion.

MALTON

Bridge - There were joint winners in Malton Bridge Club’s Championship Pairs, Madge Allison and Rob Ashdown tying with Annette Jackson and Philip Mason on 64.2 per cent. Mike Jackson and Ray Lyall took third place with 61.7 per cent. The North-South winners on Thursday were Charlie Callis and Anne Butterworth ahead of Caroline Peall-Clegg and Carole Dixon, the East-West winners being Joan Pickering and Audrey Shaw with Roger and Ruth Mattingly in second place. On Sunday the club ran its annual open pairs competition for the Ryedale Cup, won by Keith Freeman and Madge Allison, with two York pairs in second and third places.

Fairtrade - The Christmas Fairtrade Shop is on November 9 and 10, from 10.30pm to 4pm, at the Friends Meeting House, Greengate, Malton. There will be free entry and Fairtrade refreshments. All welcome.

Church - Parishioners at St Leonard and St Mary’s RC Church, Malton, should note that the Red Missionary Boxes are due to be emptied between now and December. They should bring them to the church over the next week or two.

NORTON

Service - A family shoebox dedication service will be held at Norton Bethel Methodist Church on Sunday, November 11, at 3.30pm. The offering will be taken for Samaritan’s Purse. It will be followed by tea in the schoolroom.

OLD MALTON

Ladies Fellowship - The October meeting of the Ladies Fellowship involved an evening of various crafts which was arranged by one of the members, Jacqui Gempton. Members did drawing, painting, work with buttons and designed items suitable for the Christmas season. It was a very relaxed and therapeutic evening bringing out some talents which some may not have used for a while. A vote of thanks was given by Caroline Jones. Business followed after coffee and was led by Sue Galley in the absence of Helen Morgan. Discussion was mainly about the Christmas fair and the Christmas dinner, both in December. The raffle prize was donated by Anne Nolan and won by Joan Lawrence.

Prize bingo - It will taken place at Old Malton Memorial Hall on Friday, November 16, at 7.30pm, to raise funds for Old Malton Church.

OSWALDKIRK

Centenary - On Saturday, November 10, in St Oswald’s Church, at 6pm, members will be marking the centenary of the end of the First World War with readings of poetry and prose and talks about family or local histories. Following the readings and talks, there will be a period of quiet reflection and they close with a short service of Compline.

Remembrance services - The annual Remembrance Services will be taking place in both churches on Sunday, November 11, at 9am in St Aidan’s and 10.50am in St Oswald’s.

Bell ringing - On Sunday, November 11, in St Oswald’s, the church will be joining in the national and international ringing of bells at 12.30pm to mark the end of hostilities. All ages are welcome to join in this commemoration, please bring your own bell.

PICKERING

Coffee morning - The annual Dogs Trust coffee morning will take place on Saturday, November 17, from 10am, at the RVS Centre. There will be stalls selling cakes, Christmas crafts, bric-a-brac and a raffle and tombola. Any contributions would be much appreciated. Also any old blankets and towels for the Dog’s Centre in Leeds would be appreciated. All welcome, especially dogs.

Show - Pickering and District Horticultural Society Late Open Show will be held on Sunday, November 18, in the Memorial Hall, Bridge Street. The show opens from 1pm to 4.30pm. Classes include vegetables, flowers, plants, cookery, handicrafts, children’s, floral art and photography. Exhibits to be staged either 6pm to 9pm on November 17, from 8am to 10am on the morning of the show and remain until 4.30pm. Entries close by 9.45am on the day or the show, except floral art which closes Friday, November 16. Entry fee 30p per class. Children free. Judging starts at 10am. Admission by donation at the door. Trophies will be presented at 4pm. All exhibits to be removed after the show.

Football Club - Pickering Town Football Club Weekly Draw numbers for October 29 are 13, 30 and 5. There was no winner so next week’s winnings will be £300.

RILLINGTON

Quiz - Six teams playing for £42 took part in Jennie’s Mega Quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners with 54.5 points were Team @ the Bar, second were Honeymooners (52.5) and third Gary, Steve & Co (51.5). The £10.50 jackpot was won by Team @ the Bar. Jennie’s next Mega Quiz will be on Friday, November 16. Mike and Col were the winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz. The jackpot was another rollover.

SHERBURN

Football Club Letters Draw - The letters drawn on November 4 were A O Q. There was no winner so the prize fund next week will be £90.

Community club - The next of the popular bingo sessions will be on Saturday, November 10.

Remembrance Sunday - In Sherburn the programme for Remembrance begins with a service at the Methodist Chapel at 10am and will process to the monument for 10.45am to remember all who gave their lives. There will be tea and coffee in the Chapel Hall afterwards. In the evening gather at the community club from 6.15pm when there will be a time for remembering and the lighting of the beacon. The sky will be illuminated in red, white and blue, the piper will play the final lament and then the church bells will ring to herald the centenary of the ending of the First World War. There will then be a buffet celebration in the Community club.

Methodist news - Tuesday Coffee Morning hostess was Judith Ruston and your kind donations for coffee continue to be given to the Christmas Shoebox Appeal. Craft club continues to meet on Thursdays at 1.30pm and all are welcome to bring along their craft. Sunday Worship which was the annual shoebox service, was led by Christine Fenwick assisted by Liz Aconley. Kim Canterbury read the lesson. After worship, members all enjoyed refreshments together in the hall. Next week at 10am, members will hold the Remembrance Sunday Service led by Paul Midgley processing to the monument at 10.45am. In the Link at Chapel all this week, not just on Sunday, there is a prayer tree with paper poppies which we invite you to hang on the tree to remember a loved one. Write their name on if you wish. All are invited to come and remember those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

Christmas shoeboxes - A very happy time was enjoyed by all who came to help pack the shoeboxes for children for whom that box would be the only gift received. Old and young gathered in the Chapel Hall and 120 boxes were filled with loving care. Thanks to Alice, Lauren, Taylor, Bailee, India, Kiara and Jacob who gave up time from their school holidays to help – you were amazing. It was lovely to welcome some new friends from Scarborough too. The generosity of folk never fails to amaze. Thanks too go to the coffee morning who are raising the funds required to send the shoeboxes. On behalf of the 120 children who will receive the boxes – thank you so much.

SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - Michael Bursell gave an amusing talk to the Sinnington People’s Guild on October 30. Entitled “Winkles to Walls”, Mike spoke of his childhood in Filey, collecting winkles, boiling them then eating them using a pin. He tried several jobs, after leaving school, before approaching the National Trust to train as a stone waller. Mike displayed his trade tools and showed various interesting old items found while working. He was welcomed and thanked by Jill Simpson.

John Woodmancey was the pianist for the two hymns chosen by Mike. Tea and biscuits were served. The next meeting on Tuesday, November 13, at 7.15pm, will be a musical evening to be given by The Northern Ryedale Singers. All welcome. There is no charge, but a collection will be taken for a charity. Supper will be served.

STAMFORD BRIDGE

Concert - A free concert will be given by Stamford Bridge Singers in St Olave’s Church, York, on Sunday, November 18, at 7.30pm. The main item will be Maurice Duruflé’s atmospheric Requiem. The concert will also feature a new piece by conductor Stuart Nettleship, entitled Armistice, which is a setting of a poem by the American poet Sophie Jowett, plus Somewhere in France by choir member, Barry Cross, and For The Fallen by Peter Irving. THORNTON-LE-DALE

Ladies group - The leader Philippa opened the meeting with a short poem by Thora Hird then introduced the speaker John Flintoft of Pickering. His talk was called ironmongery and locksmith tales. One of the members present told John that she wanted some proper clothes pegs and sent for them online and really surprised to find that they were from Flintofts of Pickering. The group had a very interesting afternoon, tea was served by Margaret V, Sue and Margaret S. The next meeting is on December 6, at 2pm, when Thornton-le-Dale Friends will entertain followed by a bring and share tea.

Bridge club - The result from October 29. In first place Barry Smith and Bob Wardell with 57.8 per cent and in second place Mary Mortonson and Lynda Lockwood with 57.3 per cent.

WESTOW

Clothes collection - The clothes collection around Westow on Saturday, October 20, raised £112 for the village cricket club. More than 55 bags of unwanted clothes, shoes, bags, belts, soft toys, curtains and bedding were kindly donated. The bags were then sold by weight and the monies will be used for the running of the cricket club. The organisers would like to thank everyone who donated items.

Christmas draw - Tickets for the Westow Cricket Club Christmas Draw are now on sale. Prizes include Christmas hamper, vouchers, alcohol, chocolates, biscuits, pork pies, Christmas cakes, and other Christmas fare. Tickets are 25p each or four for £1 and are available from players and supporters of the club. The draw takes place on Friday, December 21, in Westow Cricket Club Pavilion as part of a Christmas social evening, which is open to everyone.

WOMBLETON

Coffee morning - The Christmas coffee morning is on Saturday, November 24, in the village hall, from 10am to 11.30am.

WI MEETINGS

Sinnington - At their October meeting, arrangements were made for their Christmas party when it was decided that the theme would be a decorative face mask. The Christmas lunch venue would be at Cedar Barn, Pickering, on December 4. Observers tickets are now available for the annual conference being held in June 2019 at Bournemouth International Centre. Ticket price is £20 plus accommodation and travel. From 2019 the NYEFWI newsletter will be distributed electronically and a hard copy for each member sent in bulk and these will be available at WI meetings. Jo Harvey was thanked for her contribution in organising their distribution for many years. President Helen advised members of the £25 bursary to be awarded to a WI member to be spent on a Federation event; she again encouraged members to look at the numerous events outlined in the monthly newsletter. The president reminded members that the November meeting would be the AGM and anyone interested in standing for office should let her know prior to the meeting. Sinnington WI members have been seen sporting their beautifully beaded, felt poppies, either worn as brooches or adorning their key-rings. These were made at their October meeting under the expert eye of Michelle Russell who started by telling members about her life with textiles and costumes, working in theatres, holiday camps and studios.
