APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Bishop Hagg Wood - The latest Saturday morning work task as part of Appleton and Spaunton Community Interest Company’s management of Bishop Hagg Wood was attended by three hardy villagers who braved a morning of rain and hail, the main tasks being wood collecting and brash burning. Next Work Task will be November 24, at 10am.

Parish council - The next meeting will be held in the village hall on Thursday, November 8, at 6.30pm.

Singalong - The next Community Singalong will be in the village hall from 6pm to 7pm on November 7.

Centenary Service - A Centenary Remembrance Day Service will be held in Christ Church on Sunday, November 11, at 10.15am. The amended Roll of Honour and the War Memorial addition will be unveiled. Also, this may be the last chance this year to see the six evocative “Therebutnottheir” figures.

FARNDALE

Charity evening - There will be a charity Country and Western evening at the Lion Inn, Blakey, on Friday, November 2, at 7.30pm. Music will be provided by Alf Berry. There will also be an auction and raffle. Tickets are £6 which includes a supper. All proceeds to the air ambulance. To make a donation to the auction or raffle, phone Ken Wilson on 01751 433241.

Calendar - The 2019 Farndale Calendar in aid of Farndale Village Hall is now available from BATA, Kirkbymoorside, Feversham Arms Inn, Farndale, and Lion Inn, Blakey, cost £6. All proceeds go to the hall.

HOVINGHAM

Market - The Hovingham Village Market will be held on Saturday, November 3, from 10.30am to 1.30pm, with more than 60 stalls selling local produce. Guest stall is Sophie Smith, of Bakehouse in the Barn, formerly of Easingwold now a resident in Hovingham, selling a selection of unusual cakes. Community stalls are the Hovingham British Legion with a lot more than just poppies and St Helen’s Church of Amotherby, raising funds. Josh, the resident busker, will be in attendance, the cafe will be run by Hovingham All Saints Church and the volunteer market manager is Graham Mason.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - There will be family pub quiz at the Crown Inn, on Sunday, November 4, at 8.30pm. Entry £2, including a sandwich supper. Prize is a voucher to spend at The Crown. The quiz is in aid of St Chad’s Church, Hutton-le-Hole.

MALTON

Church - The Parish Gift Weekend was held at St Leonard and St Mary’s RC Church, and all donations will go to the restoration and upkeep of the church. The weekend fundraising replaced the pre-Christmas bazaar in the Milton Rooms some years ago following a survey of parishioners. The money is required to undertake work on the church building, including re-tiling part of the roof and supporting damaged masonry in the tower. The engineer visited St Leonard’s last week to update the sound system and the amplifier and loop system have been replaced. A small selection of parish and charity Christmas cards are for sale in the church. More have been ordered and should be here soon.

CAFOD Action Group - During the run-up to Christmas, the group would appreciate any offers of festive baking. They are hoping to serve Christmas cake, mince pies or other festive baking at the Harmonia Christmas concert in aid of CAFOD on December 8.

Bridge club - The latest Positional Pairs session at Malton Bridge Club was won by Tricia Pearce and Madge Allison, with Derek Fox and Richard Hilton in second place and Beryl Bramall and Madeleine Webber third. The winners on Thursday afternoon were Nigel Miller and Angela Smith ahead of Audrey Shaw and Joan Pickering. The first set of fixtures in the Yorkshire League took place on Sunday, with Malton A scoring an excellent 19-1 win away to Sheffield B in Division 1, while Malton B lost narrowly 11-9 at home to Wensleydale in Division 6.

NORTON

Meeting - The October meeting of Ryedale Parkinson’s Support Group was held in Trinity Methodist Church when members enjoyed a demonstration with many samples by Kerry, of Wiltshire Farm Foods. KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Football club - Kirkbymoorside Junior Football Club held a sports jumble sale and a cake stall to raise money for the club. It raised £290 and they would like to thank everyone who donated and helped, especially the Robert Stephenson Trust, who kindly donated some equipment to the cause.

Bridge Club - The results from Tuesday, October 23 were: North/South winners were Anne Avery and George Goodall with 64 per cent in second place Judith O’Donnell and Graham Burgess with 58 per cent. East/West winner were Graeme Matthew and Mary Mortonson with 59.2 per cent in second place Bo and Tony Simpson with 57.4 per cent.

Environment Group - The number of items brought and taken at the Give or Take Day last Sunday was greater than ever before. Someone took a vegetable slicing kit with a set of blades – but they left behind the special holder that stops you slicing your fingers off. Autumn fair - The autumn fair is in All Saints Church on Saturday, November 10, from 10am. Christmas stall coffee/tea and mince pies.

Library - Free under-fives Storytime and Singing on Wednesdays November 7 and 21, at 2.30pm to 3pm.

All Saints Church - The junior church are collecting items for the shoeboxes which are sent to the Orphanage in Romania. There will be a box at the Children In Distress shop to leave items. List of items needed are small gifts, sweets (not chocolate), toiletries, gloves, hats, scarves, socks, tights, hair slides, small teddy bears, notebooks, pens, pencils, geometry sets, felt pens, colouring books, crayons, etc and a Christmas card.

Poets - The new poetry group offers a display on Market Day in the Memorial Hall on the generation of poets known as The Georgians. Please collect a form from the display or Kirkbymoorside Library to help them plan their meetings after half-term. Email johnopenlearning18@gmail.com

Scouts - Unfortunately the scouts will not be laying a line of coppers this year but will be in Kirkbymoorside High Street on November 10, from 8.30am to noon, collecting for Royal British Legion.

All Souls Service - This year’s All Souls memorial service takes place at All Saints Church on Sunday, November 4, at 6.30pm.

Julian Meeting - Kirkbymoorside Julian meeting are held at the Catholic church on the second Tuesday of the month. The next meeting is on Tuesday, November 13, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. Any enquiries to Rev Tania Brosnan 01751 431452.

Tuesday Group - Members meet on Tuesday, November 13, in the Methodist Church Jubilee Room at 7.30pm when preparation for the Christmas tree festival gets under way. The leader for the evening is Gwen and the tea hostesses are Kath and Audrey.

Domino drive - Sturdy Court’s next domino drive is on Monday, November 5, at 7.30pm. All welcome.

KIRKDALE

Church - Services will take place at St Gregory’s Minster, Kirkdale: Sunday, November 4, 11am, Sung Eucharist. St Hilda’s, Beadlam, Sunday, November 4, at 9.30am, All age Eucharist.

LEAVENING

Remembrance service - To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, Leavening will be holding its own Remembrance Day Service at 10am on Sunday, November 11. The services will be led by Louise Hayes, Methodist Church lay worker. The service will be remembering those from Leavening who died in the First World War, several of whom will have been taught in what is now the church but was, until 1906, the village school. The service will be followed by a short act of Commemoration at 11am outside church. All are welcome to either the service or the act of commemoration or both. This service is in addition to the usual parish remembrance day service which will take place at Birdsall at 10.30am.

Embroidery group - The Leavening embroidery group invite everyone to an exhibition which will be held in Leavening church from November 7 to 14 to commemorate the Great War 1914 to 1918. The church will be open each day from 9am to dusk. Refreshments will be served on November 10, from 10am onwards. Any donations will be given to the British Legion.

PICKERING

Draw - The numbers for the Pickering Football Club Weekly Draw for the week commencing October 22 were 34, 39, 37. There was no winner therefore the prize money rolls over and will be £225 next week.

Cricket club - Pickering Cricket Club’s next domino drive is on Thursday, November 1, at the Recreation Club, starting at 7.30pm.

Coffee morning - The annual Dog’s Trust coffee morning will take place on Saturday, November 17, at the RVS Centre, Pickering, from 10am to noon. There will be various stalls, including bakes, nearly-new, bric-a-brac, Christmas crafts, raffle and tombola. Contributions to all the stalls are always welcome, as are towels, blankets and tinned dog food.

Domino drive - A domino drive will be held on November 9 at 7.30pm at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, for the bowling club.

Bridge Club - In the latest session of duplicate bridge the joint winners with 60.42 per cent were George Goodall and Anne Avery and the partnership of John Bramall and Graeme Matthew. In third place were Moira and Anthony Brown with 52.5 per cent.

RILLINGTON

Bingo - £697 was raised for April Benson at a prize bingo held in Woodlands Community Centre. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker Sue Nelson. The next prize bingo on November 21 and will be for Looby’s Lifeline.

Quiz - Jennie will be hosting a mega quiz in the Fleece Inn at 9pm on Friday, November 2. £2 admission includes cash prizes to third place, cash jackpot and hot supper. Sue’s Crew were the winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz, the jackpot was a rollover.

Action morning - A Love Where You Live action morning will be held on November 10, to clear litter, fallen leaves and weeds. Meet in village hall car park between 9.30am and 11.30am to collect sacks, pickers and gloves. No need to stay for the full session, half an hour would be appreciated.

RYEDALE

Embroiderers’ Guild - The Ryedale branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild met at Snainton Village Hall. In the morning members worked on their own embroidery. The speaker in the afternoon was Pauline Heywood, the chairman of the Yorkshire region of the Embroiderers’ Guild. She encouraged members to experiment with just one stitch using a variety of thicknesses and colours of threads and different sizes of stitch. She brought a number of books and samples for people to look at. On show were many examples of embroidery using just one stitch. At the next meeting there will be a chance for members to experiment with this technique. To join, phone Angela on 01723 449143.

SCAMPSTON

Walled garden - To commemorate 100 years since the armistice of 1918, volunteers at the Heritage and Learning Centre have created two displays in the walled garden conservatory showing local life during the period of conflict. The group put together two displays entitled The Front And The Home Front. The displays bring to life the support of local people towards the war effort and provide fascinating insights into the stories of those living in and working on the estate at the time. The exhibition closed on Sunday, October 28, but will again be available to view at a coffee morning to be held in the village hall on Saturday, November 24, from 10am, where there will be a charity collection for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

SEAMER

Methodist Church - The service today was taken by Nikki Warner. The vestry steward was Allan Dunnington, organist Doreen Lawson and the welcomer Margaret Neave who also took the collection. Bible readings were given by Sheena Dunnington and Amanda Clayton. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Rev Dr Kevin Ridd and Holy Communion will be observed.

SHERBURN

Meeting - The Malton Rural East Community and Police Consultation Group meet in the Methodist Church Hall on Wednesday, November 7, at 7pm. It is open to everyone to discuss local police related issues and to meet your local community and area police officers and a chance to air your views and question your local officers about crime issues, road safety and anything else that you feel needs an answer. Representatives from Highways, Housing and other safety partners are invited too should your query be concerned with other areas of our community.

Sports club - Another packed house the Sherburn Community and Sports Club witnessed £605 paid out at their latest bingo session. How unlucky was the higher/lower game again failing on the third number for £170. So this moves to a massive £180 next bingo. Congratulations to Matty’s Millions winner netting a cool “£90 million”. Also thanks to Cresia for setting up. The next bingo is Saturday, November 10.

Football Club draw - Last week the letters were A, I and V. There was no winner so the total prize would be £540. Letters drawn on October 28 were E, A and O and there was one winner Karl Baggaley who scooped the £540. Next week’s prize will be £45.

St Hilda’s Church - The church was beautifully decorated for the community harvest festival which was well attended and included Brownies and Rainbows. Later in the service three of the Rainbows and one of the Brownies made their promises. Harvest gifts were for the Rainbow Centre. The service was led by Rev Joe Kinsella and the organist was Martin Monkman. Sidesperson was Keith Usher. After worship a beautiful supper was enjoyed by all. The next service will be on Remembrance Sunday, November 11, when they will meet at the Methodist Chapel at 10am and process to the memorial at 11.45am.

Methodist Church - The Tuesday coffee morning hostess was Judith Ruston and kind donations for coffee continue to be given to the Shoebox Appeal. It was good to join members’ Anglican friends for their community harvest at St Hilda’s Church and they were delighted to take the new harvest banners made by Jean Brown to add to the display. Worship on Sunday was led by Minister Rev Dr Kevin Ridd and was a very special occasion as not only did they have Holy Communion, but it was also the Baptismal day for Freya Jane. They enjoyed a wonderful buffet afterwards to celebrate. The service next Sunday at 10.30am will include the blessing of the shoeboxes as they begin their journey to bring joy to a needy child. This will be an All Age service led by Christine Fenwick and Jean Brown assisted by the Worship Team.

SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - The Sinnington People’s Guild welcomed Father Bill Godfrey on Tuesday, October 23. Father Bill is currently the vicar of Lastingham, but his illustrated talk told of his early ministry in Nottinghamshire. In 1987 he went as a missionary to Uruguay working with disadvantaged poor people. He was made Bishop, a post he held until 1998 when he removed to, and became Bishop of Peru. The presentation showed the rugged and mountainous terrain, with habitation even at 18,000ft, Peruvians in their colourful costumes, their festivals and the large congregations at their Churches - built by themselves. Father Bill had thoroughly enjoyed working in Peru staying until 2016. John Woodmancey played the two hymns chosen by Father Bill. Tea and biscuits were served. The next meeting is on Tuesday, November 6, at 7.15pm, when Jim Pewress will speak about “the birds of Ryedale”. All welcome.

SNAINTON

St Stephen’s Church - It will be holding its annual autumn fair in Snainton Village Hall on Saturday, November 10, at 2pm. The entrance fee of £1 includes a cuppa and a mince pie. This is a traditional village church fair with stalls selling homemade cakes, vegetables, fruit, jams, pickles, chutney and plants. You can have a go on the raffle and tombola or buy some gifts from the handicraft stall, aprons/tabards for all ages, Christmas items, bunting and bags. All in aid of the church roof appeal.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - The results from Monday, October 22, were in first place Tim Johnson and Ruth Hunt with 55.4 per cent and in second place Margaret Lowe and Isa Eggleston with 54.3 per cent.

WESTOW

Quiz night - The quiz night held in Westow Cricket Club Pavilion on Friday, October 19, was a great success. About 60 people enjoyed a supper of pie, peas and mash, followed by a selection of sweets and took part in the quiz. The winning team was The Lions. The evening raised £414.10 for the Church of St Mary’s in Westow. The organisers would like to thanks the following businesses for sponsoring the event - Hodsmans of Eddlethorpe, Dales Fruit and Vegetables, Vertigrow and Haribo. To everyone who supported the event on the night, to the volunteers who helped on the evening - Paul and June Harrison, Jane Harrison, Alison Dalby, Pauline Durant and Duncan Pearson. Many thanks to Rev Stephen Walker and Jacquie Walker for setting a challenging quiz and Ron Welford and Julie Price for all their help with the cricket pavilion.

Save a baby’s life workshop - The RLSS is holding a free Save a baby’s life workshop in Westow Cricket Club Pavilion on Wednesday, November 7, from 10am to noon. The event is open to parents, grandparents and anyone who has small children in their lives. Places are limited and should be booked with Catherine Butt on 01347 879141. Tea, coffee and home baking will be available through out the event.

WOMBLETON

Domino drive - A domino drive takes place in the village hall on Wednesday, November 7, £1.50 to play, including tea and biscuits. All welcome. Domino drives are held every last Saturday of the month and every first Wednesday of the month.

WI MEETINGS

Thornton-le-Dale - The October meeting saw guests from Snainton, Lockton and Middleton WIs joining their own members for the harvest auction and supper. After a short business meeting, when members were informed about a forthcoming poppy workshop and the Ryedale Show AGM, members handed over to Paul Carter who had agreed to be the auctioneer for the evening. Paul expertly sold a wide range of items ranging from jams and pickles to sloe gin and meringues. The bidding was fierce for Charles Hill’s sausages and the meringues. A magnificent £350 was raised, which will be split between the local foodbank and another local charity of the members’ choice. After the auction, supper was served by the committee and other members. A thoroughly enjoyable evening. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, November 13, which will be the AGM with a quiz to follow. Guests welcome.

Appleton-le-Moors - The village hall was buzzing for the October meeting and president, Mrs Humphreys, was delighted to welcome three guests. Members reported on the recent, much enjoyed trip, to Calendar Girls, the Autumn Council meeting and a fun packed visit to Denman College. The speaker for the month, Jonathan Pomroy, then gave an illustrated talk entitled “Sketches of North Yorkshire Landscape and Birds”. Jonathan’s stunning paintings and sketches, and keen observations of both wildlife and landscape, made for a most engaging, informative and memorable evening. In November members are off to see the Esk Valley Theatre Company’s production of The Owl And The Pussycat at Helmsley Arts Centre on November 9, and a film night in the village will follow on November 14, when members will be taking a break from autumnal weather to watch Sunshine On Leith. The November meeting on November 28 will be the AGM and Mrs Humphreys urged all members to attend as there are some very important issues to discuss. Members will also get a sneak preview of what we have planned for the 2019 programme of talks and events. There will also be some light entertainment to follow the business.

Helmsley - Members met on Thursday, October 25. President Val Arnold welcomed 22 members and three guests. Minuting secretary Zena Lister read the minutes from the September meeting and branch secretary Helen Robinson gave details of forthcoming branch and regional events along with information about the branch’s annual meeting in November. Mrs Arnold then introduced Kymm Queen of Queen’s Flowers. Kymm is based at Beadlam Grange Farm Shop. She is an experienced wedding florist and also produces period floral arrangements for BBC productions. She is currently working on a new drama about the life of Anne Lister of Shibden Hall, Halifax, starring Suranne Jones. Kymm told members about her family background of florists, growers and a plant hunter, and why she is a firm believer in using alternatives to plastic in floristry as well as using home-grown flowers wherever possible. Members then got to work creating lovely autumn bouquets using greenery and flowers from her cutting garden. Denise Kitchin gave a vote of thanks for an interesting and very enjoyable evening. The competition for autumn leaves was won by Christine Allan, with Val Brown and Mavis Holmes in second and third place. Helmsley WI meets at 7.30pm on the fourth Thursday of the month in the headquarters of the North York Moors National Park headquarters and warmly welcomes new members.
