A CELEBRATION of Victory in Europe will be the theme of this year’s Railway in Wartime weekend

Run by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR), the event will run from Friday to Sunday.

During the three-day event, each station along the NYMR line will be transformed to create a variety of scenarios and performances.

New for this year will be a celebration of Victory in Europe at Levisham station which will include 1940s style show bands, music acts, dance troupes and much more.

Visitors will also be able to make a pit stop and dine in the ultimate 1940s “British Restaurant”, which is based on a national wartime initiative set up by Flora Solomon.

John Bailey, trust chairman at NYMR, said: “Railway in Wartime is great for families and this year we’re very excited to launch our brand new event at Levisham, Victory in Europe.

"We host up to 350,000 passengers every year and the only way we can continue to do this is with the help and support of our amazing visitors.”

Pickering will see the usual parades through the town on Saturday and Sunday, along with musical entertainment and displays.

Grosmont, which showcases the importance of the RAF during the war and to mark its 100th anniversary a Battle of Britain MK2 Spitfire will be on display on display, along with a RAF Plotting Room in operation with demonstrations.

Visitors to Goathland will be transported back to 1940s with displays highlighting the importance of the North York Moors agricultural landscape during the war. There will also be displays of 1940s hairstyling and hats, clothing and militaria.

Pontefract Home Guard will be protecting the station with an headquarters at the station entrance.

“We can’t wait to see lots of families visiting us for the ultimate nostalgic day and our wartime event is the perfect mix of education and fun.”
