A FUNDRAISING evening is being held on Friday to raise funds for Hovingham village clock.

The clock was built in Leeds by W Potts and Son in 1879 and currently has to be wound up by hand every six days.

Murray Stewart, one of the clock winders, said: “There are very steep steps up to the tower and there are three weights to wind every six days. The oldest clock winder is 75 and there are three in their 70s so we are hoping to raise £500 for its electrification.”

To help raise funds, husband and wife Michael and Fiona Bennett, who live in Cawton and sailed from the UK to the Caribbean, will give a talk with slides and video on Friday in Hovingham Village Hall at 7pm.

Tickets are £10 to include a fish, chip and mushy pea supper. Proceeds will also go to the RNLI.
