JUNK and litter, including road signs, shopping trolleys and traffic cones, are among the items pulled out of the Derwent in Malton by two community-minded canoeists.

Paul Roebuck and Paul Lister, two stalwarts of Malton & Norton Canoe Club, spent a couple of hours one evening fishing for scrap under County Bridge. They found a large range of items, including a bicycle, road closure signs and a supermarket trolley or two.

Malton & Norton Canoe Club has its club house on the banks of the Derwent, adjacent to the Bridge.

Club secretary Bill Inness said: “Not a bad haul. As well as cleaning up the local waterways, the club has a very keen racing section, as well as open canoeing and white water activities. If you would like to have a go contact w.s.inness@btopenworld.com.”
