VOLUNTEERS working to redevelop Malton’s Milton Rooms have expressed their disappointment at being turned down for Lottery funding.

Plans had been put forward for a £500,000 redevelopment of the building, including developing the 19th century Subscription Rooms, which face onto Yorkersgate and house Malton Museum.

However, a revised plan is now being considered with funding from other sources.

Merryn Wilderspin, chairman of the trustees of the Milton Rooms, said: “We are obviously disappointed at the decision of the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the result of which will mean that we can’t achieve all of our ambitions, but we will, of course, now be looking to progress alternative plans for more modest improvements.

“The board very much appreciates the development team’s enormous effort and commitment to the HLF bid.”

The scheme proposed a new level entrance from the Market Place, foyer, toilets and an office, along with a lift into the main hall and floor below. An exhibition space would also have been provided for the Woodham Stone Collection.

Merryn said: “We well recognise that our core purpose is about providing a vibrant entertainment facility and event hire space and I’m sure that many in Ryedale will have seen a considerable increase of activity in relation to both of these primary aspects during the last 18 months especially.

“We have also made great strides towards making the Milton Rooms fit for purpose in many critical areas and meeting the ever-increasing challenges of operating a public venue in the 21st century.

“This is all the more remarkable an achievement given that the board and staff are all volunteers. The amount of time and dedication required in all areas is enormous.

“During the day we sell tickets, select and hire performers, process venue hire bookings, carry out health, safety and maintenance works, generate all kinds of marketing and advertising content and then, at night, require front-of-house teams and bar staff to manage actual events and performances.

“This will all continue apace as we now plan the next phase – just not to the scale as originally hoped.

“We are always looking for more people to join our team and bring their expertise to the redevelopment and would love to hear from anyone who wants to join what is an exciting time for the Milton Rooms.”
