AN artist has used plants from Scampston Walled Garden to create an exhibition of monoprints.

Stef Mitchell’s exhibition entitled Botanical Impressions is now on display in the walled garden café until October 28.

Using the historical process of nature printing, Stef works with local landscapes and plantings to record the organic accident and intentional mark. Her work at Scampston has been built around the natural forms she has gathered from the walled garden and parkland, showcasing the change in season and pace throughout the year.

“We’re extremely excited to be working with Stef,” said Scampston’s marketing manager, Charlotte Kirton.

“It’s been magical to see how the beauty of our walled garden marries perfectly with her vision, talent and skill to create these impressive monoprints.”

Each month, Stef has visited the garden to pick plants and foliage, which are then put into flower presses and used to make nature monoprints. This process ensures that each piece is entirely unique.

Stef, from Staithes, said: “The focus of a culmination of work after picking and gathering plants throughout the seasons at Scampston has brought a new focus to my work and with access to such a wide range of plants, will be feeding into new work long after my time in the gardens.”

Having completed a degree in film, photography and sound, Stef continued her post graduate studies at Goldsmiths University, followed by a second degree in fine art. She now exhibits nationally and internationally, most recently at the SALT Gallery in Beverley and in the New Lights Prize Exhibition.

Her work has also been showcased at West Yorkshire Print Workshop, Mirfield, Ropewalk Gallery in Barton-upon-Humber, Ferens Gallery in Hull and Sewerby Hall.

Stef now balances her life as a successful artist with managing Staithes Studio with her husband, Ian, promoting local, national and international artists and running workshops.

Both Stef and Ian also spend much of their time on the road, taking in the beauty of the great outdoors as inspiration for their art.
