STUDENTS at Norton College have mastered some tricky problems as part of one of the UK’s biggest maths competition.

This year, students took part in the team and individual sections of the competition, run by the UK Mathematics Trust.

In the team challenge Kai Briggs, Hannah Mainprize, Suzie Whitehead and Zak Wormald finished in the top five.

In the individual maths challenge, Nathan Bennison, Year 8, qualified for this year’s Maths Olympiad and Zak Wormald and Daniel Shepherdson, both Year 8 students, qualified for the Junior Kangaroo stage. Zak also received a certificate of merit for his score in this challenge.

Five students also achieved gold - Nathan Bennison, Daniel Shepherdson, Zak Wormald, Harry Young and Noah Hutchinson.

Paddy Meade, maths teacher, said: “This is an outstanding achievement for our students and the maths department is incredibly proud of them.

“It shows hard graft, raw talent and a cool head under pressure – qualities we celebrate here at Norton College.

“Taking part in these competitions creates a real buzz about maths and problem-solving skills in the classroom - and at our maths challenge club on a Thursday lunchtime – as well as invaluable skills for the workplace.”
