TWO of York's surviving Normandy veterans were guests of honour when 50 scooters and motorbikes were proudly displayed in York city centre today.

York Inset Scooter Club held its annual 'Show and Shine' scooter and motorcycle display in Grape Lane, attracting hundreds of shoppers to the street.

Veterans Ken Smith and Ken Cooke, who are honorary members, were able to get along and see the scooters in the warm sunshine, with Mr Smith, of Wheldrake, also briefly sitting on one of the machines.

The event was raising funds for the Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit at York Hospital after club member Nigel Cocks underwent a triple heart bypass operation there, said club spokesman Nick Beilby.
